Hello Ozphorian's Through our affiliation with SP.com we are giving Ozphorians the chance to ask a few question to the band. Anything you have ever wanted answered, this is your chance to get it done. It doesn't need to be about anything recent, just make it important and also try to not make it a "yes" or "no" answer, make it an open ended question. Oh and of course the questions can be for ALL members of the band, not just Billy and Jimmy. We have until Tuesday of next week before I'll submit them through the band, so get the thinking caps on and post the most pressing Smashing Pumpkins question to you right now. Post them below and I'll collate them all, feel free to discuss others questions too. This has been opened to a few other communities out there, not all questions will be answered obviously but ALL questions will be passed on. So hopefully an Ozphorian's question gets picked! Cheers Sunky PS: The Smashing Pumpkins have done this before, with the 'Ask a Pumpkin' submissions ... so if you're stuck for an idea (which Im sure you're not) then check them out here: " Ask a Pumpkin"

Billy and Jimmy, Just wondering if these certain pumpkin era shows will travel to many different countries ie. Australia? and roughly when will these dates occur? Also a query about the gish box set coming out. Is there a tentative release date and what can we expect?

How about:
Should we be expecting any future vinyl releases such as Zeitgeist or American Gothic or should we only expect singles to be released in the future as was the case with the Tarantula and That's The Way?
or
Any word on a personal sponsorship from Gillette or Braun or some other shaver brand for Billy's dome?
Ok, that last one was a joke but I would love to get answers to the first two questions.
or
Will we ever get a physical (non iTunes) release of Stellar? It is a great track and I was disapointed when it wasn't included on the Best Buy re-release of Zeitgeist.

I've been given the word that I too can submit some questions, so here is what Im throwing into the mix.
How will the release of live recordings via livesmashingpumpkins.com effect the 'open taping policy' the Smashing Pumpkins have with their fanbase? and will there be a chance of past shows from the "vaults" of the Smashing Pumpkins being released via this method too?
... I'll keep adding I guess.
(Im also getting the idea that if we see a recurring theme with some questions, they'll most likely answer that topic. So say if anybody asked something relating to bootlegging, livesmashingpumpkins.com etc ... that could be all put together as one question to the band hopefully answering it for all fans).
Good questions so far, keep em coming.

To the SP If you were taken from earth on an alien space ship what song would you play to represent the human race? Apart from each other who would you take with you and one item you would want to be with you. Australia is waiting with open arms to embrace you all and we will see you soon!

Hey Billy and Jimmy first of all I'd like to know what riffs and songs you like playing personally the most from any era and as a guitarist myself I would love a jam session(just a dream i have) if you ever come back to Adelaide? Are you ever likely to re-unite with James and D'arcy I know that they said they did not want to be part of the current reunion but heres me wondering in hope and do you keep in touch with them? Thankyou for touring here ever grateful fan -Nick from Adelaide

This is actually really difficult, he's so open with stuff that theres not much left to ask, combined with the brain freeze aspect.
I guess the thing im always interested in asking songwriters is this: Billy, How does the songwriting process usually work for you? Is it generally developed from a riff which then gets embellished? Or is there a lyric that comes to you and sparks the process and yyou try to construct a song to accurately represent the emotion of the words? Or is it diferent everytime?
Also; Will the different era shows involve getting completely into the mindset of that era- ie. will you be transforming into Glass and the Machines of God for the Machina shows, and if so does this also mean you will be donning a wig of curly locks for the Gish shows to get into character?
Love, Jimmy (Cygnet).

wow, look at the lurkers come out of the woodwork for this one! haha. Welcome aboard Ok. so here is one question I have so far. Billy: Talking to you in Australia last year you mentioned that 'Zeitgeist' was the statement that you felt would best bring the Smashing Pumpkins back to the attention of the wider music community. Having now gone through that "comeback" process, how do you feel about it? Was it harder than you expected? Had the audience changed more dramatically than you expected? And in the end was 'Zeitgeist' the right statement to get you to where you wanted to be?

wow, look at the lurkers come out of the woodwork for this one! haha. Welcome aboard Haha. I've always been open about my lurking, though... In my like... Four posts :\ For Billy and Jimmy: Although the album Adore was an artistic success, do you feel it would have been more of a commercial success if Jimmy had have been present for the writing and recording? How do you think that would have changed the sound of Adore?

Jeff, Ginger and Lisa: (because the old guys get all the questions!) As the new members in an established, recently reformed band, do you feel accepted by fans? How has working with Billy and Jimmy affected your view of the music world, and music in general? What do you feel you have bought to the band? Thank you! Britt (thewhiterabbit)

Nice to see some serious questions being considered!
* Being independent artists now and away from the confines of record company contracts must be liberating not only creatively but also in a business sense. What kind of considerations are there to take into account in regards to touring schedules, costs and the creation/promotion of new material now that the band is its own entity (free agents, if you will)?

Don't know if its too late yet simon, I feel bad about the lack of questions being offered to you! C'mon people! Anyway I thought of another question to fill some of the dead space left by this thread haha.
Billy & Jimmy:
You both collaborated with other musicians on your solo albums, as the Smashing Pumpkins is there anyone out there at the moment that you feel is similar in either mindset or musical style that you could see yourselves collaborating with. Or do collaborations often work best with artists that are different to you, rather than similar.

Nah its not until late US time, so won't be till tonight Australian time ... keep them coming through peeps ... plus this is just to get an idea what the fan base wants to know about, so its about getting a vast range of questions and ideas about what is important to us at the moment. Here is another question I just thought of: There was talk of some extra releases with 'If All Goes Wrong', like a CD soundtrack and eventual Blu-Ray release. Are there still plans to release these? If so would there be any additional songs or features not included on the If All Goes Wrong tracklistsing? (I know that last one has been talked about by a few people here, so I'm adding it to the list on their behlaf)

Another: It was revealed on SP.com that G.LO.W will eventually have a physical release as single, will this mean it will have an acompanying video? and what formatsare you looking at releasing the song - Digital, CD, Vinyl? ---- Alot of collectors look forward to buying albums and releases on vinyl still, how cost effective is it for the Smashing Pumpkins to release material on vinyl that will only be purchased by a select group within the commmunity? Is there any reason why the last 2 releases of Zeitgeist and American Gothic were not released on vinyl? --- And another: There has been criticism from some sections of the fan community about the production levels of songs and albums since Machina (including Zwan and theFutureEmbrace). eg "vocal levels have been accused of being too high over a mix", what do you say to these criticisms? (If anybody wants to suggest a way to reword that then please suggest ... ) ...

I know I've probably missed the boat, but I'll stick it here anyway
Some songs you perform are covers of originals from other bands that have been transformed so radically (Talking Heads Once in a Lifetime springs to mind), as well as some of your own songs (BWBW 98, TTEOR 98, Shame 07). Yet some songs like Cherub Rock and Disarm have hardly changed at all over the years from the original incarnation. I'd just like to know why you change the arrangment of some songs and not others, and if changing the arrangement of those songs has inspired you to create a similarly arranged original song (i.e. similar riff, new lyrics)? Thanks.

Mr. Corgan, what do you think about doing a side project with Moby and Micheal Stipe from R.E.M.?
You don't need to be a painted blue men group but what about calling yourself the "Gold Bold Boys"?
Seriously, knowing the works of all three quite well, I see many connection points and think this could be musical wise a exciting, experimental art experience.

The way I would pose it : "In terms of vocal production and mixing post Adore (including Zwan and theFutureEmbrace) you have received alot of criticism, why do you think the production of your albums have received this criticism and what inspired you to mix those albums the way you have?"

btw Simon needed questions to be submitted by Tuesday 30th Sept, so its too late now for this round - but Simon, will you keep a thread like this around permanently because I guess if the fan questions go well this time, it may be something that they do regularly?

Yeah keep the questions coming ... if they don't get answered now ... it could always be something I can ask for an article. If its something topical, relevant etc ... and since yeah it was only 3 months ago when the band got questions from us PMM writers, I can see if happening again. They love hearing from their fans. And Osullivan - love the rewording ... I just couldn't get it down right. thanks man!

He kind of answer that in this interview back in August: www3.timeoutny.com/chicago/blog/out-and-about/?p=9161TOC: A few years ago you played a solo acoustic show featuring your folk songs about Chicago. What kinds of things were you writing about, and is it still a project you are pursuing? What spurred you to start doing that?Billy Corgan: I felt very inspired because I had gone through a really serious depression after the break-up of a relationship. I was really in a bad place, and had pretty much moved out of the city. But at one point I had to come home and lick my wounds, and found that the city really embraced me on an emotional level. It wasn’t like the people on the street; I just felt embraced by the place. So this project was my way of honoring what I thought was great about the city. I started writing about stuff I had never though about writing about: the Chicago fire, the Leopold and Loeb case, the Cubs and Sox rivalry. I wrote about fourteen or fifteen Chicago-related songs and I did one performance at the Metro. I had planned on putting it out, but I found that the response to the songs and the direction I was going in was so underwhelming that I just got really disappointed and put it all away. TOC: Do you think you’ll revisit that at some point?Billy Corgan: The plan now is to let it sit for a while, and maybe pick it up and do a part two. To put maybe seven years or so between them, and then maybe make a documentary. I have all the footage from the first cycle. That’s the plan now, and it’s the best-case scenario I can think of. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I guess his focus is rebuilding the Pumpkins to the band they once were, then releasing his side project stuff. If he did it now, sure we would be happy, the other people out there would be confused. Is he a Pumpkin? is he solo? ... but yeah, sorry, doesn't look like I post that on the forum.
