Re: B-sides (being discussed in Zeitgeist News & Discussion thread - but I thought this might be a bit OT)... You know how bands sometimes release instrumental versions of songs as b-sides? (probably more of a hip-hop thing, but RHCP did it with Road Trippin'). Anyway, I reckon SP should take things one step further and release a drum track only instrumental version of United States! The last couple of times I've listened to it, I've just been concentrating on the drums - sensational! Particularly in light of Corgan's revelation (I think it was in the Blue Room interview) that it was a single take! That Chamberlin; no stoping him. The way he's able to just keep building the song. The snare doesn't even come in till around 7min to bring a whole new lift.... Suffice to say, I'm a big Jimmy fan - and I'm not even a drummer. But I know we all love him :-)

Yeah, he's great (treats the drums as an "instument" not just a time keeper). One of the greats for tone, timbre, accents. etc. But a drum only track, I don't think that's gonna happen.

Sadly, I think you're right. But i can dream! Spot on with comments on Jimmy's attention to detail/nuance.

"and in the eyes of the Jackal I say ... KA-BOOM!"
I remember making a collection CD of some of my favorite live versions of XYU. Some great live recordings from the Sacred and Profane tour for sure, love the recording where Billy finishes the show with telling a story about being "Jack". Also the version with Marilyn Manson on vocals is just gold ...
I'm going to find that CD now.

The -X-yu files wasn't it? The doger stadium version on FAEOMM is really cool. I'm sure there was an acoustic version floating around too.

oh speaking of acoustic versions, Foxy do you still have the CD with the acoustic version of Thru the Eyes of Ruby on it? I think it was a Spain bootleg? I've got the disc, but I think it has a scratch on it because it won't play in my computer or cd player anymore.
(I just found it while trying to find the XYU Files disc (yeah it was called that!))
... still searching through my boots for that XYU disc.

No doubt some wuld have read this on undercover:
Trent Reznor Called Smashing Pumpkins "Corporate".
Trent Reznor has slammed the most recent incarnation of the Smashing Pumpkins as "corporate".
Speaking to NME, Reznor said "I was never a big Smashing Pumpkins fan back when they were the Pumpkins, not to shit on Billy (Corgan) or anything but I don't hear anything that would make me want to care.
"I think trying to resurrect the name Smashing Pumpkins… it's all a bit corporate for me."
Smashing Pumpkins in the studio was rarely anything more than Jimmy Chamberlain on drums and Billy on everything else, with James Iha and D`arcy mainly filling out the band live.
Their album 'Zeitgeist' shows a heavier Pumpkins that was only touched upon in the years leading up to their demise.

For sure, I remember an interview around the time The Fragile (1999) was released and Reznor claimed that he was "trying to save rock & roll" and that Billy "failed, and now it's up to me" (or something along those lines)... I find it quite amusing. I love NIN too, but am definitely a Pumpkin loyalist.
Does any one know if Billy's ever reciprocated?

I doubt Billy will.
You can say any band is being to corporate these days, they are a business and they have to be if they want to stay around the top. Even Trent to a point is being corporate, hiring a marketing team to promote Year Zero and having a strong focus on the viral marketing campaign ... now if that ain't corporate I don't know what is.
(Not bagging Trent at all, I respect him so much and love how they promoted Year Zero and think alot of bands would do a lot better if they took this approach).

In regards to Trent's comments, I will quote Trent himself:
"I don't hear anything that would make me want to care."
On a totally unrelated topic, I've noticed that in the tour dates so far, Chicago has still been omitted. In fact, I think there was only 1 Illinois venue announced, and I wouldn't even know where it is in relation to Chicago. Just wondering what the motivation might be behind that? Are they really snubbing Chicago? Are they saving it for something special? Any thoughts?

yeha Bazza its a good point, I've been trying to figure out what there thinking might be behind it also.
I always thought they would have started the tour there for sure, its like they want to distance themselves from Chicago. I know BC and JC are living in LA these days, so maybe they want to not just be seen as SP from Chicago anymore, because there was a huge focus on them and their connection with Chicago.

Actually pretty interesting you mention BC living in LA now - Remember on the sound opinions interview in 2000 where he addresses talk that he is moving to California...
Billy is about to say "I hate California" but stops himself just short and says "I've lived in California, it's not for me" or words to that effect from memory...
Random thought i know...

Even Pink Floyd were accused of being corporate and they made some of the most important music in the history of rock. I pretty much dimissed Trent's comments as him trying to drum up some publicity. Nothing gets people's attention like a celebrity taking a shot at another celebrity. Courtney Love will no doubt be doing it to all and sundry when her next album comes out.

Yeah, he talks about it on the United Centre interview, he said he'd never go back there (but he was outta Chicago too) just before he headed to New York I guess.

Trent is such a whinger! Seriously, remember the hissy fit he threw at the Sydney shows this year, hahaha! I love it-he's just as corporate, if not more so! What would we do without guys like that?
