Despite cold, wet conditions last night, a near packed house filled Sydney's Enmore Theatre for the only Eagles Of Death Metal show in town. The band were on the home stretch of their first Australian shows and despite the stubborn weather outside, Jesse Hughes and co were looking to heaten things up with some Sex driven Rock N Roll.
Touring on the back of last years sophomore hit Death By Sexy, Hughes, or Boots Electric as he is also known, was without co-partner Josh Homme, who is on Queens Of The Stone Age duty (Although there is talk that he is also in Australia spending time with the family of his partner, Distillers vocalist Brody Dalle)
Following sets from openers The Watt Riot and Zeppelin driven Irish rockers The Answer, the group hit the stage with Dizzee Rascal blaring from the house speakers. After greeting everyone in the front row with a huge grin and many handshakes, Boots kicked the show into gear with Don't Speak which was quickly followed by Kiss The Devil, the first track from the bands 2004 debut Peace, Love, Death Metal. As the second track was being played out, 4 dancing girls, almost a Death Metal cheer squad if you will, rushed the stage from the back and danced the song out, much to the crowds delight.
Hughes addressed the crowd, the first of many times he would take to the mike in between riffs, welcoming the Sydney faithful and commenting on all the beautiful girls he saw in the crowd. One of the highlights of the night came with I Like To Move In The Night, every bit the groover that it is on record.
Boots is almost a walking contradiction in some ways. A country boy at heart, he seemed generally overwhelmed with the packed venue - Even at one stage admitting "This is an intimidating crowd". He also let go of the fact that this was likely the biggest crowd the group had played for. At the same time, his constant swagger and ego fuelled rock persona "Boots Electric" darted around the stage (literally the man couldn't stop moving) - and played to the constant screams of the standing room floor (the females in particular). You couldn't fault his enthusiasm to get the crowd involved at every instance, from the simple routine of having the crowd clap in time, to attempting a new crowd decible record for this tour - Hughes was determined to make sure the crowd felt a big part of this show. He succeeded.
Cherry Cola and Whorehoppin' were, as expected, big crowd favorite's...the band were experiencing a few little sounds problems, nothing major. But it did sound like a speaker may have blown which messed up one of Dave's solo's. It would prove to be nothing minor as he still found time to trade riffs with Boots, both at either side of the stage. At this time it also needs to be mentioned how tight Gene is behind the kit. It can't be said the Eagles tracks are anything more than basic for a competant drummer, but the feeling and groove he brigs on the skins, and also his enthusiasm was certainly a highlight for me.
The band certainly kicked it up a notch were hits I Want You So Hard, I Gotta Feelin' and I Only Want You - A fan favorite blast to end the set. Jesse and crew leaving the stage to huge applause, an encore was imminent and the crowd were going nowhere.
Coming back minutes later, Jesse performed Midnight Creeper solo, before calling on the crowd's roar to get the rest of the band back on stage. Under huge applause, the band covered the old Damned classic New Rose, a reasonable version, but my opinion was that the next cover - Brown Sugar by the Stones, was much better. Perhaps it was more the Eagles style, the crowd still on their feet and dancing, Jesse driven by the roar of the people more so than ever in closing the night. Speaking In Tounges was the final blast for the night, and with that, the band collectivey arm in arm, took a bow for the masses and called it a night. But not before Boots Electric was draped in a cape James Brown style - If only to remind you one last time, This was the Jesse Hughes show, and the pleasure has been all Sydneys.
Setlist

Well this was the 12th and 13th times I've got to see the band and in one word it was "Silverchair" I'll combine both nights together. Dappled Cities came on at 8:30pm and played for half an hour. We fell in love with them, I had heard 'Holy Chord' played on JJJ. I'll be honest I had hated that song so much, but now its grown and me. Really love this act, we picked up their Granddance album on the second night - nice way to start the gig. Ok so now to the main show. both nights were fairly similar when it comes to the setlists. No real surprise there for Silverchair gigs really. They always find a good structure and stick with it. They played a solid set, with majority of it being new songs. The crowd was actually really into it, everybody was singing along to the new songs and totally loving it. I couldn't believe this was the same city that was booing the band last year at the Rock-it festival ... i guess this is the advantage of playing to a smaller venue. Finally people got it. Some highlights: Those Thieving Birds / Strange Behavior - The power in Dan's voice in this song and it really showed off the talent of the band, being able to change styles so perfectly. All Across the World - played only on the second night, for me this is my favorite track from Young Modern and I was so happy to hear it. Especially since it was dropped from the first night. Sleep All Day - This was a demo that they did play last year, I loved the track and was kinda upset they left it off the album. But for them to still be playing it live was an awesome surprise. Tuna in the Brine - On both nights this was amazing to hear the entire crowd singing ever single word to it. It was played in a similar style and arrangement to the Across the Night tour. Mind Reader - I remember them closing with this at Rock-it. We were just left knowing the album was going to be something special after hearing a song like that ... it will always remind me of that night. As for them playing it now, its so perfect live and a real powerful song. The Door - they played The Door ... I can always go home happy after that! I could really just keep saying that every song was amazing. Sp if you want to read a good review friends of ours have one up on chairpage.com: www.chairpage.com/press_releases/item/252/Oh and as for the actual nights ... something really special. When they were playing The Door it made me remember when I first saw them back in 96. Thinking how I've grown with the band in their musical tastes and how no matter how long it is in between albums I will always love them. Kerrie I know you know what I mean. Also the band were no doubt the happiest I have ever seen them on stage. sorry if thats a ramble ... its hard to think clearly when so much happened in those nights.

oh, i totally get what you mean. Just to see those boys smiling makes me smile and go all gooey. I don't know what it is.
The songs just sounded amazing, dan's voice was SO strong and the music...i honestly couldnt falt it at all (except when ben started playing the wrong song once hehe).
I surprise highlight was seeing how into Straight Lines the crowd was. It is an instant fave of mine, but people really love that song. And it is such a powerful, uplifting song, it was a strange (good, but strange) moment to see a whole room lit up singing their lungs out!

cut copy at capitol, perth was...... awful. why were there so many nightclubbing types? i just wanted to see the band not get danced with by guys with perfect hair & $500 jeans or chat with the DUMBEST girls who obviously didn't know what shoes are for.. also since when did you show up to see a band late enough to just catch the end of the support band & have to wait in line for over 2 hours???!!! i don't blame cut copy - they sounded good for the three songs or so i could bare it - but since when did they attract that sort of audience? i mean, i don't go & ruin their sunday sessions or whatever, least they could do is stay away from my favourite bands. & that's my review.

Caught The Vasco Era at ANU last night with The Whisky Go Go's and Roger Explosion. Roger Explosion made the trip down from Sydney, i didn't realise there would be a third band. Pretty upbeat rock, was a fun set and they all were having a great time. Out of nowhere they played Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love and nailed it. Very nice version i must say. The Whisky Go Go's, bit of a cliche name. I have heard that these guys are doing good things but i can't say i was a fan of their set. The lead singer has certainly been watching the Kings Of Leon closely, they had a Southern type sound with a little bit of a rockabilly feel. I overheard someone say they were a bit down on their normal output, either way, i didn't rate them The Vasco Era came out to a crowd of maybe 150 people? I'm terrible with estimates. They were clearly overwhelmed as apparently their last time in Canberra they played in front of "about 30 people". They played nearly all of their debut album as well as a few old songs including old JJJ fave Kingswood. One of two other songs i didn't know, but they were at their rocking best. Finished with an Epic version of Honey Bee - Fantastic show, and value at 14.50. They had $10 t-shirts in youth sizes to, so i'm now sporting a Vasco Era t-shirt (Well, not right now, i'm at work, but you know what i mean )

Cold War Kids - HiFi Bar 30/05/07 Missed the first 2 and a half songs because i did get there way before the support, but ran into a friend that i hadn't seen in like 10 years, so me and her went off somewhere else to get some drinks from a cheaper place. then came back and they already started, moved myself through the crowd to get to a spot i could see. Was really good, they played all their main songs and added some new ones in there which was pretty good. and they did a 4 song encore which was awesome. The Temprature was the support but as states above i did not see them

Saw Bluebottle Kiss last night. And it was good, as per usual. It was a bit empty tho, which was a pity. The Seabellies opened, and were also good. Also, it sure does suck Dappled Cities Fly are moving overseas Though I have been fortunate enough to see them live about 15 times.

A pretty good weekend for music as i caught You Am I/Which Hats friday nite and Muse saturday nite
That may have beeen the best You Am I show i've seen, and a lot of it had to do with Tim being in really good spirits, he came out with a headband on and looked very Keith Richards, Andy Kent wins Movember, hands down.
Purple Sneakers was probably the highlight. Tim talked about how he loves being back in Syndey cause it's where the band grew up. He talked about "Rehearsing up in Castle Hill back in the old days" and how "I fucked Russell in Perth but i didn't know him until a year later" haha. He dedicated the song to everyone and the town and you would swear that 10,000 people were there not one person wasn't singing along. Getting Punkarella, What They Do At Nite (!) and Whatcha Doin' To Me were also pretty great.
Ain't Gone And Open Watchya Doin' To Me Arse Kickin' Lady What They Do At Night Mr Kermode Minor Byrd The Sweet Life Thuggery Gunslingers Nifty Lil Number Like You Good Mornin' It Aint Funny How We Don't Talk Anymore Rumble Berlin Chair Junk Get Up Constance George Purple Sneakers Degenerate Boy (With Steve Lucas) ........................... Punkarella How Much Is Enough? Thank God I've Hit The Bottom
Saturday nite i cauht muse in all their glory - The light show and theatrics were great, and Mat is a great guitarist, but it was a tad underwhelming for me in all honesty. Hysteria, Sockholm Syndrom and the second half of Knight Of Cydonia were great. But all in all, You Am I were the best group i saw this weekend!
Take a bow Map of the problematique new born butterflies & hurricanes supermassive black hole map of your head riff intro citizen erased feeling good ruled by secrecy invincible hysteria fury whole lotta love riff starlight time is running out bliss

^ updated with YAI setlist.
Forgot to mention the finish, It ended with Timmy yelling "We may not be around forever, but at least we were fucking here!" Before giving Davey a huge hug and Rusty shaking up a bottle of champers and spraying it all over the crowd.

09.12.2007 - Jebediah - The Newport Hotel, Fremantle First Time Military Strongmen Loaded Gun Comet (new song) Animal Please Leave No Sleep To Your Door (new song) Leaving Home It's Over NDC More Alone Fall Down Jerks of Attention ----------------------- Harpoon The Seven Signs of Ageing (cut) What Do I Get (new song - cut) Teflon The 'Back in Saddle' tour came to an end last night, the band have been playing regional shows in WA in the lead up to the Rollercoaster Festival and their New Year gig at Amplifier. The tour has been a hard slog for the band, after 2.5yrs of not playing together and the sucess of Kevin's - Bob Evans project ... you could see they were happy to be on stage again, but not used to the "high energy" shows they are known for. That all being said, they played a great set last night and really just had the crowd listening to every single note and singing along at ever point. Even after 11 years of screaming the lyrics to Jerks of Attention or Leaving Home ... you never get sick of it. When Kev introduced Leaving Home he said "Most bands don't play the songs that broke them and made them big anymore, but we are proud of this song because it has given us this life". We got 2 new songs, Comet and To Your Door. Comet is the typical Perth-Power-Pop sound that Jebs are known for, really catchy and nice. To Your Door is nothing like they have done before, its this dark, blues, punk, ... I don't know how to describe it actually. Its really slow and has a almost waltz beat to it, but its heavy at the same time. Really hope something happens with this song and doesn't get left on the studio cutting room floor. As a Perthie, there is always a bit of WA-Pride seeing this band, being one of the first to really explode out of the Perth scene in the mid 90's they are really loved here ... and last night the crowd loved every minute of it. Hopefully they head over east early next year so everybody can fall in love with this band all over again. ------------------------------------------------------ On a side note, a friend of ours his band Kill Teen Angst was the support, don't let the name fool you - its not emo related at all - and its actually a reference to a website that used to be run in Perth back in the indie music scene days, it was actually like a MySpace to think about it ... back in 1997! Anyway they used to be Ten Speed Racer (you may have heard me mention them before) anyway they were fantastic as usual. Check them out: www.myspace.com/killteenangstmusic

Post by Tragic Ether on Dec 14, 2007 20:46:06 GMT 7
ok..... I went and saw OPERATOR PLEASE. Wait til you judge me! Im sitting at home bored stoopid, my mate calls up. Hes a photographer with fasterlouder.com.au and says he has a plus 1 tix - do i wanna come. It beat not doing anything - so i went. The support band was Cassette Kids (syd) they were quite good! But O.P. i expected to be all poppy and happy and what not. You know - the kinda disposable BS that you hear all the time. They started off with You Cant always Get WHat you want - and i thought - oh good grief here we go... - but then they got into the rest of the set. I never realised (mostly cos i never cared) that the singer Amandah is actually the guitarist - and a pretty decent one too. The little kid drummer is pretty proficient too. The bassist is a bit of a try-hard pseudo emo shoegaze nothing, the cute LITTLE keyboardist chick has a fun energy about her and does her thing on the keys - but the violinist chick - woah - shes something else! (I refer to her playing - nothing else - although shes cute in her own right) I always thought their gimmick was that they were young kids - but to shut your eyes and listen - the violin is what really sets them apart. After half a dozen songs, im thinking to myself - i know they have another single - but for the life of me i cant remember it. Some drunken bogan tools are heckling the shit outta Amandah and she breaks from the verse to yell "If youve got a problem - get the fuck outta here" to which the small but warm crowd cheers loudly, before she returns to the song like she never left, and i think - yeah - this chick is much more ballsy than her age suggests. Then it comes - second from last - the friggin ping pong song. Easily their worst of the night. Not because of the performance - but because it is their weakest song. Its a dumb meaningless dopey generic pop vomit - and it is a tarnish on their otherwise impressive set. They finish with something solid and unfamiliar. While im not rushing out to grab their CD - im definitely gonna start keeping an eye out for them in the future - these kids could be VERY big - like silverchair big. But probably more in the Fleetwood Mac way. Im sure that description doesnt quite make sense - but to me - its spot on. Shut up - im drunk! ;D

hehe, no doubt those kids have talent and can go far, its just going to be interesting to see if they can move with the music tastes over the years. Like Silverchair had to, they had to evolve and move away from the grunge sound. This kids will have to do the same, the fun power pop sound will fade in the next few years and will leave a lot of bands behind. they do have catchy songs, just reading you saying "you can't always get what you want" ... i've no got it stuck in my head. ARH!

went to daft punk on thurs night in melbourne im pretty sure you've all seen videos/pics of their stage setup it was just unbelievable im not even sure a pumpkins show could top these guys - they were AMAZING! highlights were definitely technologic and da funk, with the biggest suprise of the night being short circuit (and even more suprising, that they crowd went absolutely bonkers when this song came up ) only downer was that they didnt play digital love, but otherwise they covered most of their material edit: not much of a review hehe, but there isn't much to say other than it is a night not to be missed

9 months this thread hasn't been used ... 9 months ... didn't any of see the Smashing Pumpkins this year or what! Alright so Friday night we saw The Living End. Was a great show, good mix of new and old ... only 1 song from Roll On and 3 from the Self Titled ... everything else was from everything since then. They played a cool melody thing with parts from Lone Ranger and Problem and some other songs all tied together ... was awesome to see Chris kill it on guitar for a short while. During a break of Chris waiting for a drink Scott started playing Stray Cat Strut on his bass ... then Andy joined in ... then Chris joined in and just played the tune ... was awesome to hear them do this All in all ... a great show. Made me remember why I love this band so much, and that also I'll be seeing the Stray Cats in 6 months

i love it when they do Stray Cat Strut, i think i've heard them do it twice. PLEASE tell me they've finally ditched Prisoner from the set list, fuck. glad you had a good time, did you take any pics?
so i'm guessing from now on this will be the post-gig thread? most of my 'reviews' will probably go something along the lines of "i saw ____ and they were awesome" haha
