Sorry just really excited by the news about the new MacBook Air ... this laptop is great! Sure doesn't suit everybody, and I most likely wouldn't get one ... but the design of it is just fantastic. www.apple.com/macbookair/

Don't we already have an apple thread somewhere? Anyway... yeh it is pretty cool. IF i wanted something ultra portable like that and would only have it for BASIC use... i would get it. I like the Time Capsule thing too, it's pretty cool. And nothing announced for iPhone that could see it released here quicker and speaking of apple stuff... my charger for my MBP is stufffffed. sucks soooo much. i can sort of get it to charge if i hold it a certain way... but who's going to do that... pretty much some cables have come out and don't charge... i've bidded for one on ebay. hopefully should get a good price. max bid i've done is $100. if i don't win i'll just get one through the primus mac store (oooo discounts)

I couldn't find one, thats why I started this.
Anyway yeah totally agree, its a great machine but not for me. I know a few guys here who do a lot of tech/server type work that it would suit their needs perfectly. They are always on the road working and to have something so thin and easy to use is perfect.
Time Capsule is a great thing too. And yeah no news about the iPhone is dissapointing, but hey they can't do everything at once. We are still looking at a May/June release date here I think.

yeh the main reason behind the delay of a 3G iPhone is the battery life.
Thing is though, if you say a lot of techs would want to use the MBAir, it doesn't come with a standard network port... only wireless... they would HAVE to have a wireless AP in the area that would then accept them onto the network to do what they want to do....

most larger companies have some sort of wireless network surely?

Post by Josh on Jan 16, 2008 8:50:29 GMT 7
they do, but security is a BIG issue. when i was at the school. we were only starting to put in a wireless network. but yeh security was one of the main issues. i mean, you can put on a WEP or WPA.. but thats really only useful for home use. at the school, the wireless that is now setup (i've kept in contact with my previous boss) they have setup security certificates for clients so when they access the wireless AP they have that certificate on the laptop or wireless device that will let them in. pretty complicated stuff but for a network tech engineer... for me anyway, it would be essential to have a network port.

I watched the Macworld video this morning, here are my opinions (if any cares LOL)
Time Capsule: VERY useful for laptop users, hell any Mac user. You can have it anywhere you want now. And multiple machines can be backed up to the one unit. Very useful for small business networks.
iPhone feature upgrade: Doesn't really affect us ATM, but I guess it will be handy. Hopefully Australian data would be included for the location feature, but in the country there isn't a helluva lot of wireless hotspots, or mobile towers for that matter. How accurate would it be outside of a city? And I can't understand why it is a free upgrade for iPhone, but US$20 for iPod Touch? Jobs admitted they run on the same OS? Hmmm....
AppleTV: YES! I think they have just about got it right this time. No matter which way I looked at it, the first AppleTV still wasn't quite what was needed. Essentially I think consumers wanted something more like an iPod as their media centre hub, not an extension of their home computer, and the AppleTV delivers the iPod-like functionality with the independance. The only thing that I think is still lacking is the ability to record digital TV on the AppleTV. It's great to have movies and TV shows that are downloadable from iTunes, but sporting events and localised shows aren't catered for. And you can't surf the net on it either. These might be on the drawing board later, but at the moment it is very VERY close to what I want personally.
Macbook Air: The biggest thing that Jobs noted with this is that they wanted to build the best laptop without compromising features like screen size, keyboard size and processor speed. While the laptop itself is an astonishing piece of engineering, Jobs has contradicted his statement by compromising things like a DVD drive and peripheral connections (FireWire, Ethernet, more than 1 USB port). Unfortunately I think these features are still important ATM, especially if they have created 'Remote Disk' so that you can use another computer's DVD drive. So essentially, a DVD drive IS still needed. I think they have created a notebook for a niche market, but the MacBook Air is just the working prototype for the rest of the laptop family. I would expect the rest to get thinner in the future, while keeping their current features.
Overall I was very impressed with what Apple is doing at the moment. Everytime these keynotes come up, I always think 'what else can they possibly do?' And then something outside the square pops up, and it falls into place beautifully.
<declaration_of_war>What has Microsoft done lately other than create 1 operating (the term is used loosely) system in the last four years?</declaration_of_war>

I think microsoft have been wasting their time on Xbox and Xbox 360 Fair point. XBox has been very successful for Microsoft. BUT WHAT ELSE HAVE THEY DONE?!? LOL I know MS haven't been sittlng idle, but they take so long between major software upgrades that it appears that they are, and it is detrimental to themselves and their customers. Vista is the prime example. Too long in the making, that kind of wait had high expectations that weren't met on delivery. Now it's hurt them, and provided an innovative company like Apple with a prime opportunity to get some market share. The figures are supporting this. And with Apple now having their fingers in the PC, phone, music and movie industries, they are really getting a foothold. They also have such strong partnerships in all of those industries. Apple are not only innovative with their products, they are innovative with their business strategy too.

I have been trying to watch the Keynote on my stupid laptop all day but with all the updates i had to do anyway like Trend Micro, and then Quicktime to try and watch the video when it didnt work the first time, and then the thing just plain not bloody working anyway, i am now on my desktop in the hope that i can grab an hour to sit and watch this macbook air i have seen on the website. In other good news, now that jessy got a new job, her redundancy payout from her old job will have some it going towards an iMac woot! Im joining the club! Does anyone here have one of the new iMacs? I know Olivia (formerly of the strawboard) does. Also, i know that i will be able to use it really easily (i watched a leopard quicktime - OMG it all makes so much sense, that time machine thing is crazy, and the multiple desktops - we just looked at each other like stunned mullets (fish not hairstyles) in the apple shop when we were playing on the iMac and saw that!) anyway....any books that anyone can suggest to ease my transition?

MacOSX is that intuitive you don't even really need to think about what you need to do. Example: My parents and sister had a PC with Windows98. Every freakin' week there was a phone call about something wrong with it, or something that didn't work, or something they had no idea about. Time came for a new computer, I told them to get an iBook. Tech support phone calls have dropped to maybe 1 every couple of months. If my mum and dad can work it out, you will have no troubles at all!

I thought I would be fine...and if I do get stuck I have all of you to annoy Everything with the Mac's does look so intuitive. Being a frustrated pc user and seeing all the leopard stuff my jaw was dropped the whole time just thinking .... "well duh! of course you should do it that way it makes so much sense!"

I've had some time to read more info about Time Capsule, very excited about it. Been using Time Machine with a backup drive of ours and loving it - this feature will just work so much better. I haven't watched the Stevenote yet, its downloading now ... think I'll watch it tomorrow afternoon. bazza - I totally agree with you when it comes to Microsoft. They do nothing for years, and when they do its just a whole fizzle lately. It will be extremely interesting to see if this trend continues with Gates leaving the company in June of this year. As foxy said, to much time and focus has been on the whole Xbox and home entertainment area, but even that isn't going great for them either. Everything is always "alright" there has never been a product that has totally blown people away with their forward thinking. @kerrie - WOOO! YAY Kez. yeah as everybody else said, its really straight forward, my Mum is a wizz on the mac now. She hated computers, until we showed her Bree's old laptop and Mum was like "i can do that". Its smart and it just ... works. It can take a while with the transition, like getting to know all the shortcuts etc but there is some helpful reading on the apple website - www.apple.com/getamac/movetomac/

Well the rumours are they are going to launch the iPhone in Australia when the Apple stores open in Melbourne and Sydney, which is going to be in June/July ... so that would make it a perfect time to do so. Have you seen photo's of the stores so far, they look pretty impressive.

no i haven't seen any photos @nick, yeh i know about them, but it will be also available across every network i think. Telstra will be stupid NOT to sell it.
|
|
|
Post by sunky on May 25, 2008 20:24:05 GMT 7
Do you think telstra won't sell it because you won't be able to access their BigPond music store on it? All their phones have access to it, but obviously the iPhone won't ... that is where they make most of their extra money. I think thats a reason why they haven't as yet.
I'll find the photos and post them, think they were at mactalk.com.au

The melbourne one is going to look pretty damn impressive!
After seeing Josh's data usage, all i can say is that the data plans better be bloody good (as good as the hiptop) or it wont be worth it at all. You will have to get all your data included in a set fee, or else it is going to get way too messy.
Does anyone know how it is done overseas?

Post by sunky on May 26, 2008 9:15:05 GMT 7
Not sure how its done overseas, but for me Im not going to be to worried about data rates. The 2 places I am the most are at work and home, while Im there I'll be able to just connect to wi-fi. So im going to end up going on what ever the cheapest data rate is for those odd times Im out of free wifi range.
