is anyone else losing interest in this? Im sure it'll change if its an awesome song thats released up first, but it shits me when a rough date of hell oween is given, and 5 weeks after the rough time has come and gone, nothing is mentioned about music being released. if you cant stick to the rough times you give, dont give them, and no one can complain that the music ahsnt been released yet.

Listened to it when I got home from work in the wee hours of the morning. I liked it, although I think I'd like anything they released.
Loved the piano solo to start it off. With American Gothic and the tracks off the DVD it seems they're going with a mellow sound.
I think the idea of releasing these ttracks like this is genius!

Quite like the new track. sounds more of a Billy Solo that a SP track, but then again they have always put out mellow tracks but the compliment the other tracks on the album. Looking forward for rest of the album being released

what i wanna know is why the track isnt tagged as 'american gothic' and i like that they went with a 'familiar' track to start fof the releases.

Posting this after listening to the song halfway the first time - loving the guitar solo shredding, not so sure on the full song, but again its my first listen.
Will post back when I have some firm feelings on it.

"Song for a son" sounds great but it does sound a little unfinshed.... the drums don't sound right.!! Is it because this is the FREE version of the song and EP version might sound a little different. When is the next song coming out.?? Is it one song a week or month....... can't remember.??

Yeah it sounds unfinished to me, surely not a final mix and not a final master. Guitars are pretty upfront in the mix, drums sound buried and lack dynamics against everything else, esp when Mike starts playing more fills/complex stuff, it's great but it's just not cutting or feels "together" with the rest of the instrumentation.
Bit bummed the first release would be a half assed mix... hoping this isn't the final!

listening through it now. first few seconds and it instantly sounds like MCIS-era Pumpkins. listening into it further and it sounds like MCIS-era Pumpkins blended with the lyrical maturity of Adore/Machina-era Pumpkins and the psychedelia of Gish. i can see what people mean by "half-assed" mix. i think some fans might have been a bit too impatient and forced Billy and Kerry's hand. regardless, it's still an amazing song that sounds like it benefitted from being played live. the piano is beautiful, the guitar solos sound like BC releasing his inner guitar god and the vocals sound so painful. i remember the first time i listened to the live version i wanted to cry because i could feel the pain that Billy has for not having a son of his own. just beautiful. and Mike Byrne isn't too bad. he's no Jimmy, but it sounds like he has some real passion so i think it's a bit too soon to judge. i think we should wait until we hear stuff three years down the line when the album's almost finished to cast final judgement. but right now i kind of wish that Dave Grohl would put the Foo Fighters on hiatus and join Billy in the studio.* i'm really hoping Jeff and Ginger get involved in this. i know Jeff's caught up with Lassie Foundation stuff right now and Ginger's been a mum for 3 months, but i don't want their time with the Pumpkins to simply be as "touring members." they're both good enough to be on a Pumpkins album. (especially Jeff) i want to say the same about Lisa, but since she's touring with Adam Lambert (aka that guy who didn't win American Idol but got a major record deal anyway making the whole competition, once again, utterly redundant) i don't know what her status is with the Pumpkins. hopefully she'll be contributing, though. once again, talent that shouldn't go unnoticed. (* = i'm actually kind of serious about that. Foo Fighters just released their Greatest Hits album, so now would be a good time for band members to pursue other musical ambitions. it'd probably make their next album feel more special when they get back together again

I really like the track... It made me instantly excited for the new stuff... whereas with Zeitgeist I only fell in love with the songs after hearing them live.
As for Dave Grohl - he's currently with Them Crooked Vultures zerorawk

unimpressed by mike. yes its the final master, at least for this ep - it won't be remastered until the whole project sees release and thats not going to fix the stuff you guys are mentioning.

Ive kinda been avoiding coming on here because i feel near the end of the tether. With all that's gone on this year, my position has consistantly been to wait until I hear the music before passing judgement. Now that it's begun, well, Im pretty unimpressed. It's not bad by any means, but it really seems pretty flat and listless to me. I can kinda see where he's going, but the lyrics are really sloppy, it sounds as though its trying to be epic for the sake of it, and as a result feels a little disjointed. I wondered if I'd just become cynical about the whole thing, but put on Zeitgeist and can still appreciate that as a great, not top level pumpkins, but still better than most work. I always felt as though Billy was still waiting to deliver on his big promise with this record though, and frankly my hopes are slipping fast.

Why? They could release them all Right Now if they wanted to. Why is it an uncertain amount of time? If anything is going to make me lost interest, it's this. One month between songs is stupid enough as it is, but this is intolerable.

I'm feeling the same way. Schedule the dates, have some lead up time so people are excited knowing that every 2nd Monday (for example) there will be this new Smashing Pumpkins song ... yes it was Christmas and New Year etc, so that is cool ... but come on! a month between songs, it is just not on.

Well that's what he promised though, isn't it? A song per month for 44 months.

im happy for them to have the record albel, and some new starchildren, but does billy really need a new distraction when he is trying to work on an album that'll last 44 months?! or is that why he said 44 months, so he has time to work on other stuff between songs?

Yeah, i think there definitely needs to be a lead up to each song to generate some excitement. There are only so many times you will log on to the site before starting to lose interest. Still, once a new song is out i am sure all will be forgiven!

New son is due out on Monday, apparently.
I don't want to harp on about this, but the "you'll get a song, when you get a song" approach is not doing this project any justice. I look at a band like Ash, who are releasing 26 songs in a series called the A-Z series (each song is a letter). Anyway, each song has a video (even if it is just a live recording or cut together with live material) and each single has a set release date too. So for me as a fan, I know when I'll be getting each song. There is a little bit of excitement and lead up.
I'm getting the news of the Pumpkins song releases via Kerry Brown, after he asks Billy.
