so i saw Ben Kweller on thursday night, and the Special Beat on friday, both gigs were great. here's a few pics: Ben Kweller Special Beat - so much fun! i really couldn't be bothered going but glad i did, it was really exciting once they came on. basically there was the backing band (not sure if they were randoms or ex-members of any of the groups), and first Neville Staple from The Specials sang 8 songs, then Pauline Black from The Selecter did 8, then Ranking Roger from the English Beat did about 8. then for the encore they each did a song from their bands, and then three songs at the end were together (presumably one from each band again). i didn't know that many songs, probably about 5 or so just from ND connections over the years, but it was still really cool. Pauline was such a cool dancer, and Neville was really funny. everyone HAS to go see The Specials in July when they're here. DO IT! Neville Pauline Ranking Roger (scary photo but he was cool)

i saw Paul Dempsey last night @ Northcote Social Club (had a photo pass). i never got into SFK and haven't heard any of his new stuff, so i basically had no idea what to expect, but the show was sooooo good! i'll have to go and pick up the SFK greatest hits now. i used to think they were really boring but like different music now than what i used to...
anyway he did a few covers, one was an MGMT one that was really good (can't remember the name of the song, but it wasn't Electric Feel or Kids. whatever their other popular one is). he also did an Elvis Costello song (Candy? that was really good too), and Bette Davis Eyes.
anyway the crowd had been yelling out some random stuff like song requests, and someone yelled out "Bullet with Butterfly Wings! you've done it before" and Paul was like "i think you're confusing me with another tall morose individual. who has something against pumpkins." and then some guy in the crowd moans "the woooooorld is a vampiiiiiiiireeeee" hahahaha
also saw Trev there, and met another guy who went to both Melb shows last year. i told him about the site so maybe he'll join here.
anyway that's my little story for today.....

WOO! I just realised I'll in Melbourne for Flaming Lips when The Specials tour ... Paul Dempsey sounds like fun, never been a huge SFK fan either ... never knew about the BWBW cover. Interesting.

well i was a bit confused - not sure if the fan was totally wrong, or Paul had forgotten. either way Paul was really impressive live, i'd def go again.
you have to see The Specials so you can tell me all about it! so annoyed i can't go.

Flaming Lips ... FUCKING AMAZING! This was ... I'd hate to claim this ... but one of the greatest shows I'll ever attend in my lifetime. Surrounded by some close, wonderful friends and one of the nicest crowds ever. Pure enjoyment from start to finish. The new tracks were definately more 'rock' in their sound, but they added a great mix to the show. I've got some video, I'll upload but the audio came out crappy ... but hey it was a good test for my new iPhone. The show started with the band entering out of a screen from a giant vagina on the screen, then Wayne was inside a giant bubble ball ... which rolls onto the crowd. He surfs the crowd during the song Ta Da! and a bit of Race for the Prize ... then there was a gorilla on the stage ... there were people in Frog outfits and bunny outfits ... there was confetti ... bouncing balls the entire show filled with confetti ... I can't describe the show anymore than: "It was like a childs dream circus exploded in Festival Hall for the night" You can see some photo's here: www.flickr.com/photos/brunky/sets/72157621805519863/When they tour again ... make sure you're there. NO EXCUSES!

We saw the White Album tour during the week, I have to put together a review just to remember this.
In short, Tim Rogers owned the stage. Chris Cheney is an amazing guitarist ... AWESOME!

Way to write that review sunky ... ya jerk. Anyway: Last night Jebediah performed to a very appreciative, but small, crowd at Mojo’s in Fremantle, Perth WA. The purpose of the show was as an ‘open night’ rehearsal before the band heads off to perform at the Blueprint Festival in Ararat,Victoria. I’ve uploaded some shots to flickr, plus a few little video’s too … sure they are from my iPhone but it is still good enough. The whole show was just fun from start to finish, one of those rare nights where the band and crowd are having an equally good time. Setlist (few might be out of order) Lino / Animal / Yesterday When I Was Brave / NDC / Fall Down / Comet / It’s Over / Please Leave / Feet Touch The Ground / Monument / More Alone / First Time / No Sleep / To Your Door / Leaving Home (Kev screwed up the lyrics, so they had to stop half way through and start again) / Seven Signs of Ageing / Harpoon / Jerks of Attention www.flickr.com/photos/brunky/sets/72157622395529478/The show was just awesome, pure pure pure awesome.

It was like a party! ... plus the new tracks are great, well they are actually at least 18 months old (Comet, To your Door) ... I'll upload some recordings from a show back in 08 where they played the new tracks. Classic Jebs, cept for To Your Door ... its very different - but good.

Past few weeks we've been awesomely lucky to catch some gigs in this sleep death toll town of Perth ... I'll keep it brief. Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks @ Amplifier - 25.09.09Holy shit awesome. Came out and played about 9 new songs, bunch from Real Emotional Trash, few songs from his first solo album (technically not Jicks stuff) and then did an encore filled with covers ... Replacements songs, REM - Radio Free Europe (and some others) ... then closed with Baby C'mon. All in all, a great show ... and we were lucky enough to get a special gift from Stephen Malkmus after a friend of ours, who knew the girl working on the door, got her to tell Mr Malkmus we would be flying to New York to see Pavement ... and then a few days later the announcement of the Pavement reunion made the show that much more better. Said Malkmus gift: www.flickr.com/photos/brunky/sets/72157622336714709/Shonen Knife @ Amplifier - 27.09.09So I made the decision to catch Shonen Knife and it was pure Japanese Punk fun ... I fell in love with the broken english, cute antics and smiles from the adoring crowd (that I towered over more than usual). They played everything I wanted to hear, Banana Chips, Top of the World, Sushi Bar etc ... was just non-stop fun. www.flickr.com/photos/brunky/sets/72157622345824123/Shihad @ Amplifier - 16.10.09 Friday night we got our metal on, Shihad did what they do best and performed their Kiwi asses off. Everything from the early days of Killjoy to the most recent days, even a few new songs which is always a great thing. Pants and I were right at the front, getting squished, reliving our teenage years and god damn it felt great. We could still hold it against the biggest bogans still ... although the great thing about Shihad gigs is that everybody is having a good time and helping each other out. Fucking great watching Pants shove this big sweaty bogan out of her way and him turn around and say "Sorry". Sure we ended up bruised after it, deaf and maybe bleeding but that isn't that just the signs of a great show? Oh and what is a good show without a lead singer running through the crowd performed a song on the bar at the back of the room and then crowd surfing back to the stage ... this is the rock shows I love. www.flickr.com/photos/brunky/sets/72157622507741665/... next gig is Pearl Jam I think. (if not something random before)

They all sound amazing! Its nice to get a good run of gigs (we feel the same in Adelaide), and quite often its a small venue, small crowd but amazing show and you feel lucky to have been there. Next gig PJ? No Buzzcocks?

Well we saw You Am I ... fucking great show! Great mix of old old old songs and new stuff ... surprised nothing from Hourly Daily. Yet, it still was a great show without a single song from the most popular album ... that is the depth of this band. The highlight was the Magic Dirt cover of Ice. Currently MD are playing a few shows around Australia, but sadly not Perth. Anyway to hear You Am I cover this, was just insane ... they did it justice and you could feel they meant playing it ... anyway. We had a great time. more photos: www.flickr.com/photos/brunky/sets/72157622698963324/Set list: I Sucked A Lot of Cock (Regurgitator cover) Embarrassed Forever and Easy Junk Fifteen Ice (Magic Dirt cover) [Tribute to Dean Turner] Sound as Ever Handwasher Applecross Wing Commander Givin' Up and Gettin' Fat How Much Is Enough Frightfully Moderne Indian Giver (1910 Fruitgum Company cover) [Rusty on vocals] Open My Eyes Gasoline for Two Gunslingers It Aint Funny Constance George ------------------------------ Come on Baby Let's Go Downtown (Neil Young cover) River Deep, Mountain High (Ike & Tina Turner cover) Ken (Mother Natures Son) Cathy's Clown

So after seeing Pearl Jam a few weeks ago, we've caught a few gigs. I'll cover them in short ... short as I can. Maximo Park = Fun fun fun! Awesome energetic show. Photos: www.flickr.com/photos/brunky/sets/72157622812886827/Buzzcocks = Ok, it was great to see a classic punk band ... however, it was awkward. They are old. Really old. Photos: www.flickr.com/photos/brunky/sets/72157622937627234/Jebediah = Fun as always. This was a special invite only show at the Rocket Room, we managed to get as invite and boy was worth it. Similar setlist to what we saw earlier this year, the great thing was the happy band and the crowd ... caught up with so many old friends ... also Tre Cool from Green Day was there too. (They were playing a show the next day in Perth) ... one of the best nights of the year. We were nice and close! Note: I was pretty "happy" (ie drunk) and danced my ass off. I felt so old when I was the only one on the dance floor after the show finished who knew Alice In Chains - Would? ... the kids, they didn't know it. Photos: www.flickr.com/photos/brunky/sets/72157622813185969/Jarvis Cocker - One of my favourite performers ever, first time seeing him and he didn't disappoint at all. He walked out onto the stage, walked right up to me - shook my hand and said "Thank you for coming" ... cue me freaking out and going weak at the knees. He then handed out chocolates to the front few rows, it was so cute. I learnt some new Jarvis-esque dance moves ... if you've watch me play Rock Band / Singstar, you'll know I'm just Jarvis inspired while I dance. He has the greatest moves. There isn't much more I can say about his stage presence, the entire show I was mesmerised by Jarvis. A great thing was he would give out random facts during the show and in between songs. Random things like a famous persons birthday on that day, a "this day in history" story ... it was great. He played a complete mix of tracks from both of his solo albums ... it was also great to see Steve from Pulp playing on stage with him. God damn I would love to see them re-unite. The Glastonbury rumours are getting stronger about that This shot was taken by a friend who is a photographer ... you can see me looking up at Jarvis lost in his eyes, his beard ... I have such a crush on him, even with the beard / science teacher look. I've loved Pulp since I was young, I've respected this man for so long ... I can't begin to tell you how much fun I had seeing him perform for just under 2 hours the other night. Also at one stage he was singing directly to Pants, I think it was during "I Never Said I Was Deep" ... Im rambling. Time to shut up. Photos and some videos of Jarvis' fun facts: www.flickr.com/photos/brunky/sets/72157622972991670/

Hehe nice review sunks, we got a similar show with the chocolates etc, a couple of beers, a stiff scotch passed around the crowd. It was everything i thought it would be and yes, i enjoy rocking those moves myself, I was suprised with the amount of energy the man has and he didn't miss a note. Great stuff. One of my favorite quotes as JC was looking at xmas decorations at the venue "It's always tempting to go the cock and balls look....but i see here, you've gone for the ball and cocks look" hehe, i giggled like a school girl. Also great to watch it and catch up with two of my fave Adelaide ladeez - Kerrie and Jessy

Ok haven't updated this in ages. Polyphonic Spree was amazing haha. Saw You Am I on Friday, it was a little odd. Anyway. Saw the Manic Street Preachers and in my short review .... GREATEST SHOW EVER! www.flickr.com/photos/brunky/sets/72157625326588275/The Manics put on a great show, the setlist was perfect and I couldn't have asked for more. Sure it was a very greatest hits setlist, but the newer songs even sat perfectly next to the older songs. I haven't jumped so high, shouted so much or had so much fun from start to end at a show. That includes SP shows too. Big thanks to Kerrie and Jessy for flying over and making the experience even more fun.
