Oh and in terms of albums:
Heartbreaker is really raw mostly just him with guitar and harmonica
Gold - this was the big commercial push to make him the next bruce springsteen or whatever, so its really produced and the songs are all radio hit type stuff, excellent but it probably goes too long
Love Is Hell- Probably his darkest work, recorded in 2 parts in New York and New Orleans, this has slowly become my favourite Ryan album
Cold Roses- His first record with the Cardinals, country is where he really flourishes and while sometimes his albums start to feel bogged down by their length this never does even though it spans 2 discs, equal fav with love is hell, there isnt a bad song on its entirity apart from beautiful sorta which doesnt really fit
Rock N Roll- this album is a piss take, but somehow its still great, even with lyrics like "the sun is shining hard at my feet, the city is an animal ready to eat" and "its totally fucked, im totally fucked, wish you were here" how he ever makes something that tacky sound sincere ill never know, its one of the mysteries of Ryan Adams complete awesomness.
probably stick to those to begin with, he doesnt have any bad albums, just subpar ones- Demolition is essentially a scrapheap of 3 or 4 different albums that never got made so it doesnt flow at all, saem goes for Easy Tiger to a lesser degree, Jacksonville feels rushed at some points or more generally like a Cold Roses b side collection. 29 is actually up with his best work, but it takes ages to dig thru so probably avoid til your into him

Cold Roses is my fave, no question
Interesting for those that didn't know - In 2005, Ryan released Cold Roses, then Jacksonville City Nights, then 29 - But 29 was the first to be recorded. I find it pretty interesting.

Cold Roses was always my clear fav, but i find myself listening to Love Is Hell more and more these days, especially World War 24, so I'd say theyre about on par for me.

Ryan Adams and The Cardinals played an awesome song on the Henry Rollins show called, "What Sin Replaces Love," and it was so fucking awesome. Is this available on any album, cause I want to hear that kind of Ryan Adams.

its on the japanese edition of jacksonville city nights, but honestly just go to archives and download a live version..... i dont know if theres any album i would compare to the style of that song, it reflects the grateful dead type vibe they have going live, i think theyre trying to capture that sound more on this upcoming release

So, what's everyones opinion of the album? Personally I was hoping for more of a departure from Easy Tiger, some of the songs seem to suffer from over production but overall its a much more coherent work than that. I guess im just disappointed because i was expecting a better representation of their live style which this clearly isnt, its just easy tiger but more band focused.
Highlights: Fix It, Magick, Cobwebs, Crossed Out Names, Stop

I saw "Fix It" live on letterman last night. I was impressed. I may buy the new album and work back from there.

So, within the last week I've managed to purchase the entire Ryan Adams collection and I have to say, "FUCK" this guy is so damn awesome.
I'm just so in love with his music right now and I haven't even gotten through the whole catalouge. I'm currently loving "Love is Hell" and "Gold." "Cold Roses" has also been getting a good spin, but I've got weeks ahead of me to digest.
I'd like to thank Ozphoria for inspiring me to make this discovery.

Hehe wow, all Ryan's albums in a week - That is insane! You will be busy for a few months yet i think, good work! I held out for the latest album - Didn't even hear Fix It beforehand! It's really starting to take shape - Born into a light, Go Easy, Fix It and Natural Ghost are early fave's - Cobwebs is a great track to break the album up a bit. Magick is catchy as hell - Could it have appeared on Rock N Roll?

Just because I'm a completeist I'll be purchasing the "Whiskeytown" albums this weekend. Then I plan to buy no more new music for at least 3 months lol. Plenty of great stuff there to digest. I'm unsure if this has ever been discussed, but Ryan Adams speaks to that part of me that Neil Young does, if that makes sense. They have this similar ethic running through there music that just overtakes anything else I listen too. It's just good to make a new discovery, just when I think I've heard it all, another artist comes along and takes over your life. I'll be posting a lot more in this thread in the coming months. I'd still love to get my hands on "What Sin Replaces Love" such a great song.

Well done! ... Interesting to note, Mr James Iha appears on Whiskeytown's Pneumonia ... thats how I first got into Ryan Adams, through the Pumpkins connection.

Yeah, Ryan and Neil definitely hit the same part of me, I've probably said before but f Conor Oberst is this generation's Dylan then Ryan is its Neil Young.
Also, you're a madman taking it all in at once, took me a fair while to work thru the catalogue, especially 29 and stuff took ages to digest. New album is def taking shape, i feel like its trying to hedge bets between being an arena rock album and a quiet acoustic thing and the stuff that should be simple is overembellished a bit because of it. Natural Ghost and Sinking Ships are songs that did little for me to begin with and are now beginning to make sense. Back end def hits home with a vengance

Natural Ghost and Sinking Ships are songs that did little for me to begin with and are now beginning to make sense. Back end def hits home with a vengance That's an intersting point you make about Coner Oberst being the Bob Dylan of this generation, because for years I've tried to get into his music, but it just doesn't seem to register or effect me in anyway. I like how it sounds and think he's great with words but, it just doesn't impact me emotionally the way I was expecting it too. Ironic that I have the same problem with Dylan. Love and respect his career, but just haven't been able to have anything he's done impact me. Ryan Adams on the other hand, wow, Like Neil, feels like he's totally coming from that internal place. Yeah, I'm a bit of a madman, but I've been looking for a "new" artist to sink my teeth into for a while, but I didn't just want any kind of artist, I wanted the right kind of "prick" and Ryan Adams is that "prick" to me, lol if that makes sense. The last week has just been an constant discovery, totally loving it. For the first half of the week I was obsessed with "Love Is Hell" and "Gold" then I really got into "Cold Roses." Last night however I feel I made the best discovery of his collection, "29" and holy shit, what an awesome album. It's currently my pick of the bunch. Even "Rock N Roll" sounds great. I read so much about how this was a less serious and silly record and even though it has those elements, I still found it to be a great listen. The only two albums that haven't really struck me have been "Cardinology" and "Jacksonville," both sound good, but just not as special as the others. I haven't started to listen to the "Whiskeytown" albums yet, just pacing myself through Ryan's catalouge first. I have since noticed the Iha connection though.

I think i like Jacsonville a lot more than most Ryan fans i've spoken to, i really love it!
Interesting not that 29, while being the last album released in 2005, was actually written first. I think sunks and myself were talking ages ago how it's the perfect closer of the 3 albums (CR and Jacksonville) released that year, but it's pretty amazing to think of where his head may have been at for 29, and then to come out at the other end and make this amazing double album.
