Just wondering how you guys record yourselves.
trev and i usually go straight into a tape deck or before that a MD with a directional microphone.
Does anyone use a computer or a 4-track? if so please post your methods/equipment/sound cards/etc.
i've been looking into buying a 4-track, but would rather use my computer so i can get them into mp3s or on cd easily.
any info or stories on the subject are greatly appreciated. ta!

yep exactly. what i want to do is create a quality, not as hardcore as studio quality, recording, like really good demos. with overdubs too. some thing that you can give people and not have it all fuzzed coz its on a tabe or crapy coz its been recorded thru soundrecorder.
i really think the first place to start is a sound card. i wish we had recording gurus posting here!

i use cool edit pro 2 with my creative 128 sound card, and plug straight in to the sound card, it sounds ok, not shit but nothing too flashy (i think some of it has to do with the way i have my pickup set up, i dont use it much and dont know what is best to get a good sound with it, and is too fiddly for me, plus i think the pickup is not the best and perhaps why it was a bit cheaper than normal).... but its easy to lay out tracks put them straight into wav or mp3 or whatever...
i downloaded it (cool edit) from kazaa, before i had adsl and i was on dialup, i think it was done in one night...

I'm not even gonna pretend I know anything about recording. But I do know that Tris used to record to his computer and he had a heap of programs on there and most stuff came out sounding good. Actually there might be something about this on his old site... Ok, I just had a look and its got a list of his stuff. Fender Stratocaster Squire with Humbuckers Canora Strat Magnum Jumbo Acoustic DXP Drum Kit BOSS DD3 Digital Delay BOSS DS1 Distortion BOSS MT1 Metal Zone BOSS OD2 Super Overdrive BOSS FW1 Foot Wah BOSS ME-8 BOSS ME-30 Octave Pedal Flanger Pedal Hammond Organ Behringer MX1602a Mixer RODE NT1000 Mic Marshall Combo Amp Fostex 4-track Software - Fruity Loops Pro 3, Cool Edit Pro, Cool Edit 2000, Cogula, AnalogX Scratcher, Music Match.
Jesse, if you ever want to pick his brains, I can bully him!

Hey sd! ive recorded heaps of stuff at a friends home studio with a computer using a 'Darla' sound card and `Cubase VST' but the sound card is a bit expensive - round $1000 bucks.....this produces a really GOOD quality sound to rival most small studios around which charge $$$ hour....it works out to be of good value in the long run and all the stuff you record will be amazin ;D i know i have a copy of cubase lyin around somwhere!? right now im settin up a different system using a cheaper card 'ISIS' and i might go for a LOGIC software package......might be up & running in about 1 month....... have to save $ another good quality way of recording is if ya can find a 4track MD recorder - a band i was in used one for demo's & they are also VERY good quality but cost aprox. twice as much as a tape 4 track (but they sound 20 times better!) i really recomend using a computer as i have recorded in heaps of different formats, tape, 2 track up to 48 track tape studios,VHS! to minidisc & harddrive and i think computers are the most accesible......if ya can put up with the glitches starting out (and there will be!) its totally cool - being able to take a simple idea and easily layer it into a huge production ;D hopefully the band ive recorded stuff with `Lunafair' (or translunar we are changin the name) will have a cd out within the next months - jason just finished the last song and is gettin it mastered, then - you might be able to hear the Darla card with cubase - total computer heaven ;D

thanks! matt isn't it? i am definetly going the PC route now. thanks for your help. i'll keep a look out for a darla... i have been looking at a creative SB audigy card its about $300 standard and $500 for the next one up...
i have a question if you don't mind... do you go straight into the PC via the line in like:
Guitar -> effects -> PC line in
or into your marshall or something's line out or headphones or effects loop out? whats the best source to put into the sound card?
guitar -> effects -> amp line out/headphones/effects out -> PC line in
thanks for your help.

Hey sd, there are several ways to record or input the signal into the pc, you can go direct but it is not recomended - a couple of good ways are: 'Traditional' - amp/mic/mixer/pc mic up yr amp & go into the computer (thru a small mixing desk if ya can get one) - the pre-amp and desk will allow you to have more control over the signal before it hits the computer 'Contemporary' - guitar/effects?/pod/pc if your effects have an amp 'simulator' you could go from the 'output' or 'line out' on yr effects straight into the computer or get hold of a 'POD' or like device for recording direct guitar. These are good because they 'simulate' a series of classic amp set ups....apparently Regurgitator have used them extensively on their recordings......also good because it sounds like yrve recorded a LOUD amp but you wont annoy house mates/family/the people next door ;D you could go direct into the pc's sound card (if it has the correct inputs - cannon inputs) from guitar and add effects later but this is pretty harsh - listen to Nirvana 'territorial pissings' for some direct into the desk guitar sound! some sound cards have a 'break-out box' which is basically a box to plug into which is on a lead to the card which makes it easier to access or input to - -other cards have the inputs directly positioned on the card - which is annoying to reach back and plug into.........i hope i havent bored anyone......

Reviving an old topic........ I just got a computer for my room with the sole purpose of recording. Now I don't want anything too flash, but what am I going to need to do reasonable recordings?
The computer is 1GHz with 256RAM. Will a stock Soundblaster card do the trick? What about programs? Is pretty much all the info I need already in the topic? I'd be interested in hearing how people have gone.
Cheers ;D
