You Am I - Redfern Oval, Sydney - 5th February 2000
First generation cassette from audience recording
This is a benefit gig for the South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby league club, which at the time had recently been dropped from the national competition. The venue was the club's home ground, Redfern Oval, with the master of ceremonies being local TV funnyman Andrew Denton. A number of other performers had appeared throughout the day, with You Am I closing the show in the evening.
Tim's between-song banter is worth the price of admission alone - think of a TV evangelist riffing on the twin subjects of rock'n'roll and rugby league, with occasional profanity tossed in for emphasis. Freshman guitarist Davey Lane continues to prove a popular addition to the line-up, and the rhythm section of Andy and Rusty are in typical fine form.
This show includes a couple of songs that were new to audiences at the time: "Gone, Gone, Gone" and "Tourism". Studio recordings of these two tunes would appear on the Dress Me Slowly album and Get Up single respectively. The rest of this abbreviated set was filled with golden oldies as well as the previous year's radio single "round Ten". The night ends with all the day's performers reclaiming the stage for a "We Are The World"-style singalong of the unofficial South Sydney footy club anthem.
All in all, an unusual show given the location and occasion, but a worthy addition to your You Am I live collection.
A big thanks goes out to EF for taping this and many other You Am I and Tim Rogers shows over the years. Read his excellent review of this gig:
