Well that was one of the most amazing night’s of my life.
A special Billy Corgan acoustic performance, two sets, in a small venue, with an appreciate crowd and Billy in a great mood.
I got to the venue about 5:00pm and there were already about 200 people queued up which left me a little nervous about getting in. We waiting in line for ages and it was not until 8:00pm (1 hour after the scheduled opening time) that people were finally allowed in. I don’t think I actually got inside until 9:00pm. (I was also a little disappointed I couldn’t see any other lanyards around).
Anways, after picking out an elevated spot, we waited for Billy.
Billy came on about 10:00pm by himself and explained how the night would work. He wanted to play two sets, but the second set would depend on whether people were quiet enough. The second set would ******* songs he had not played in a while which had everyone thinking Pumpkin songs.
He played the first few songs by himself.
Set List
Set #1
1. To Love Somebody
2. Dia (which Billy explained he wrote whilst he was at Courtney Love’s house)
3. Not sure of the name of this song... lyrics like “I am the son” “I’m alone now” (This song was apparently the song Courtney liked… he only played a few bars of it though)
4. Now and Then (There was some nice banter here where Billy talked about how he almost had sex with an Australian once. Then he went on about Australians, “fucking” as he put it, and cricket)
5. Camera Eye (Linda and Matt come on stage and joined Billy for the rest of the set)
6. I'm A King Bee – James Moore (This song was performed so sexy… Billy “buzzing” and Linda Strawberry singing suggestive comments back to Billy… awesome)
7. A100 (Billy taked about how he was allergic to alcohol. Linda said the band drink for Billy. Billy the asked if it was true that some people had gone straight from the Enmore Theatre the night before to line up… a number of hands went up at the front and Billy said, ahhh that explains the stench”. He then said they had been insulted by brilliance. He also said that he was still sick and made reference to the NME article which said he had stormed off the stage at the Melbourne show. He said it was not true.
8. Walking Shade (The introduction to this song was interesting. Billy said the acoustic version would be a better version and this was a good example of how he could ruin a song… later somehow someone in the crowd said that Tasmania was our Texas. Billy asked if a world leader had come out of Tasmania that had lead the world into war?
9. Pretty Pretty Star (This song started and ended about 3 times… Billy kept messing up a line. They then said Linda Strawberry was going to play her song called “Dick”. Before this happened Billy asked if anyone had an album… a fan handed one over, he re-read the lyrics and the completed the song).
10. Dick - Linda Strawberry song – It was mainly piano and *******d lyrics like, “I could die”, “she jangles everywhere she walks”
11. Mina Loy
12. I’m ready (Billy announced they would have a break before the second set so people could go to the bathroom)
Set #2
Well the songs Billy had not played for a long time turned out not to be Pumpkin songs but instead what he said had been known as the “Chicago Songs”. He said the songs were written before Zwan when he was considering releasing an acoustic album. The songs had been recorded and the videos shot and that they would be released but not for a while… they would come out some day.
1. The Prairie Song (Billy explained this song about about the big Chicargo fire that burnt most of Chicago to the ground... and how much of it had to be rebuilt)
2. White Lights
3. Friends as Lovers, Lovers as Friends (Earlier a girl had asked Billy to sit up higher as she couldn’t see… well Billy at this stage asked for the girl again and got her and another girl who could not see to sit on the stage… very cool
4. For Your Love
5. Riverview (Billy explained this song a bit. Apparently Chicago used to have the world's largest amusement park. It was torn down in 1967 because it the rides were too dangerous but they had been a large part of the Chicago kids lives i.e. his father going there. When they tore the park down they moved the rides to other places, one right near his house. Even though they lived so close and he drove past it all the time he was not allowed to go there and use the rides because they were too dangerous).
6. I’ve Got You – Split Enz (A good sing a long from everybody on this track… Billy also explained how he was told the Australian accent is a combination of the southern American accent and the British accent… but more sophisticated and intelligent)
7. Sittin' On Top Of The World - Bob Dylan
8. Love to Hate Your Baby - Not sure??? Lyrics like, “I’ve been a dreamer my long lost love”, “I hate you baby because you’re the one I love” – Riders on the Storm melded into the end of this song.
9. Long Way to the Top – ACDC (Billy changed the lyrics slightly too… “Try playing in a folk rock band”)
ENCORE:
1. Of a Broken Heart (Billy asked if there was anything people wanted to hear… after some yelling he announced he would play every song he had ever written… the chearing did not stop for about 30 seconds He also asked if there was such a thing as Koala Bears.
2. Not sure??? Lyrics like, “You are mine all this time”, “I can’t be the reasons that you wear”
Anyways… what a fantastic night. I hope someone taped it. I hope someone filmed it.
Truly a remarkable night that was truly unforgettable!
