Got a surprise yesterday when I walked into JB to see the new Cog album on sale. I didn't think it was out until saturday.
So far it sounds like a pretty epic affair. Furthering the sound of "The New Normal." Such a huge sound for a three piece. Sounds to me like it coule be one of the best local releases of the year.
So I thought I'd start a thread to discuss the new album. I'm assuming we have Cog fans posting here.
Cheers

Shit it's out already?! I'm a regional inhabitant so am guessing it won't be out here yet... will check today though. Have listened to bits of it on myspace but want it in it's full glory before giving it a proper listen. The New Normal was a fantastic album, certainly hope Sharing Space compares... Have you seen them live? Great show

Had one listen last night proper, and then put it on when I went to bed. It all sounded so huge that it was hard to make sense of it (plus I was excited, what can I say).
Had two proper listens today and yeah, I'm gonna commit to it being a great evolution from "The New Normal."
I know it's an tired and dull point to make, but, Cog really sound like Cog now. No longer can anyone make the Tool comparison, a trend which began with "The New Normal." The only similar quality they share with Tool is the epic and beautiful way in which they create there brand of heavy rock, plus you gotta love any band who makes a 72 minute album.
All in all, I'm loving it.
Still yet to see the band live, something I'm hoping to change as they are touring soon.

Ive gotta get into this band, I dismissed them for ages because of that point^ there are so many bands in the generic heavy progish mould that are really bland and uninteresting, but ive heard enough of them now to know cog transcend that. Its a pity that they have that stigma, theres just so many disposable bands like the butterfly effect, etc clogging up the australian music scene it makes it difficult to take notice when theres actually something more substantial going on

I shared quite a similar opinion of the band until I heard Cog's "Just Visiting" eps. Even though they these ep's contain a more "Tool" sound there is just this intense degree of passion and conviction the band has in there delivery that you just can't deny. Obviously as they've evolved the band itself has unfolded it's own sound and still maintain that passion. Butterfly Effect do indeed ruin it for the rest of them. I think a lot more people would take "Karnivool" and "Cog" seriously if it wasn't for what Butterfly Effect did to the heavy rock genre in Australia. I personally believe that "Cog" and "Karnivool" actually do there best to evolve the genre instead of just imitating it, something that the Butterfly Effect continue to do. Anyway, that's just how I feel about the matter.

I agree 100%
YTou'll have to have a listen to the Quiet Child album when it comes out later this year... I think its moving towards completion now, 1st single is coming out the end of next month.
I know I go on about this band heaps, but Ive heard the unmastered cuts of the upcoming album, and quite honestly, it has to be right up there with anything happening in the australian scene. Ill let you know when its finished, as if you like cog and karnivool, youll undoubtedly be interested. Theyre heavily influenced by the same sort of sound, but have a slightly more pumpkinsy vibe ab9out them than a tool vibe... throw some opeth and radiohead into the mix that kinda goes a little way towards describing their sound

Quiet Child sound very interesting. I'm always keen to hear new bands. The description you gave definately makes me want to check them out. I love Opeth and Radiohead. I think any band that is being influenced by such powerful music is worth a listen.

I'm expecting big things from Karnivool's next release. Themata was awesome, but still had that nu-metal flavour in parts that could really grate on me. From what I've read it sounds like they are once again taking the sound to the next level, so I'll be eager to hear what comes next. Still a bigger fan of what Cog do however. I enjoy the way in which they weave the mellow with the Heavy, it just sounds a lot more interesting to my ears. Sharing Space is further proof of the Cog awesomeness. I'd have to say, it's the best local thing i've heard all year. Just good to hear a band release some passionte music that isn't designing or linking it self to anything fashionable or trendy. That for me makes it even fresher. Although it's a tired and used phrase, I'm happy to hear a band "staying true" and honestly just "being themselves." It's only there second album, so I'm excited to see where there career takes them. But like most great art or music, it will more than likely be criminally ignored by most.

to be honest i can't seem to enjoy sharing space as much as i do the new normal and both of cog's EPs.. i think this is mostly my fault because i have so much love for their previous releases and i guess when you think so much of an album it's hard not to have preconceived notions about future releases. i was listening to an interview with flynn recently and he was saying that the band wanted sharing space to be more accessible, only i felt like this was almost contradicting the very ideals they seem to be conveying.. musically i think sharing space is fantastic, but i can't help feeling a bit disappointed with the simplicity of some of the lyrics. so many songs from the new normal feel like more of a journey that you need to decipher yourself (and for me the abstract nature of some of these lyrics is the most exciting part), whereas sharing space just feels a little contrived by comparison, with all the themes laid out for you.. that said, i still adore the album and it sounds great live. i hope the recognition they’ve received for sharing space entices people to seek out their previous releases because they still blow me away
