Has everyone got a stupid orange boss DS-1?
Mine has a really low output and I can't really be bothered getting it looked at until I know that it's not just a crap pedal..
I faintly remember it being louder when I first got it though..
What I mean is, I use it for a booster on my amp distortion, but I have to have the level on almost 100% for it to even be normal volume. That cant be right.. right?

the ds-1 is generally a crap distortion pedal! get rid of it as fast as you can as i think alot of people (i have!) end up using crap distortion pedals in a 'booster' type of role in their set ups..... the boss metal zone has a huge range in tones and saturation but some people dont like it because its a bit too versatile and you can waste hole days adjusting minor things..... probably the best pedal i used was a (*coughs) zoom distortion pedal...not sure of the model# but it was big with an orange front - ill have a look for a website......

Mine would have to be the danelectro fab tone distortion.
Surprisingly beefy considering the brand and name.

Thanks.
What about the Marshall Guv'nor pedal? It is pretty cheap, is it worth spending more or is it just what sound I would like out of it?

if you like the sound that it gives you then go for it... thats what its all about... never played with one myself...
the big muff pedal is a classic billy pedal... its used all over siamese dream and also i believe on some of the zero single songs like marquis in spades and mouth of babes. god too probably...
i would recomend a multi effects unit if you are new to the world of effects. the effects aren't as good as single dedicated pedals but its cheaper and has variety.

What pedal does Billy use? Good question. The Gish sound came from an ADA MP-1, which is a rack mountable unit, not a pedal. The Siamese Dream sound was created with a vintage original 70's Electro Harmonix Big Muff (the reissues are just as good), plugged into a modified Marshall JCM 800 head (it has different tubes), which gives it that distinctive fat, round sound. Also some distortion on SD and MCIS comes from a Fender Blender (very rare and expensive) - fender stopped making them years ago. It wouldnt suprise me if the Big Muff was used on MCIS though as well. The MCIS tone comes not really from a pedal, but from another rackmountable unit - the Marshall JMP-1 pre-amp combined with an Alesis 3630 Compressor, which was then plugged into two Mesa Strategy 500 power amps. Also if you really want to get Billy's tone you need RSB Fender Lace sensors in a strat to really nail it. The Machina tone is different again and is partly made with the use of a Sustain Punch Creamy dreamer, which is what delivers that mean heavy fuzz. They are as rare as rockinghorse shit - although a few have floated around on ebay. The best advice is to just go into a music store and play what you are interested in, using the same or similar guitar you have. (Like if u have a strat, dont try the pedal with a les paul - it will sound completley different). Hope this helps.

my fave is the Boss- Turbo Overdrive. I got it at cash converters for $70 which was a score coz they dont even make them anymore. Its my favourite because on the normal setting its like an overdrive/fuzz and then kick in the turbo and its an insane distortion pedal

I know much more about this stuff now. In terms of distortion, I have a Pro Co Rat and a Big Muff. I also have a Pahse 90 and DD6.

I have been using a KORG AX10G TONEWORKS for about a year or so now, and i love it,... it was many effects, aswell as being able to select the amp modeling, effect, and reverb style, it gives you total freedom to alter levels to get that tone you are after.
I use this plugged into a minidisc for clean recording,....
I have my eyes set on a new Digitec GNX4 GUITAR WORKSTATION, which are about $1000 or so, but they have effects galore, the ability to mix and match different amps to get a enique sound, a shit load of effects, built in 8-track recorder, SD CARD slot, drum machine, and its all USB, so you can plug her into the PC for really good results. I WANT ONE! well worth it if you can part with $1000.

Zoom are a pretty average quality company though. Their things are made rather cheaply

Wow, how have I not raped this thread yet with a list of my distortion pedals?
DOD Classic Tube - decent enough lowish gain pedal, but weird filtered top end. Boost mode at the top of the gain pot is nice, was my first distortion pedal and my main for a while.
Marshall Jackhammer - reasonable "marshally" sound, OD mode is waaay better than DIST mode. OD mode sounds like RATM, DIST mode sounds like mush.
Rocktron Silver Dragon - helloooo, 1980's metal. Thing sounds vaguely like "...And Justice For All". Overdrive section's actually quite decent, distortion side is tons of fun. Lots of top end overall but it's not overly fizzy. "Tube" but it runs off 13v so it's probably not doing anything - I think there's LED's in there to make it look like it's glowing.
T-Rex Møller - Overdrive with a blend function to mix wet/dry, two voicings (one darker and more middrangey), and an independent level booster up to 20db.
Zoom Trimetal - This is the pedal of mine with the most saturation, it's already almost too much with the gain knob on 0. It's got a particular "sound" to it, bit too fizzy and there's a strange midrange scoop which you can't get rid of even when boosting mids with the semiparametric EQ. Good for layering under amp tones to give the impression of playing through higher gain amplifiers.
Boss HM-2 - Ok, this one's a fun pedal. Almost fuzz-like, I could get away with playing SD songs through it. All knobs up is the Entombed "Left Hand Path" tone, this thing's very Swedish Death Metal. Very distinctive sound.
Arion Metal Master - Very similar in sound to the HM2, probably a little clearer in the tops, but strange distortion characteristic. Cheaper construction, and there's a "dry" out which can also be changed to be a "soft" output... so a light overdrive almost.
Homemade fuzz pedal - Oddly enough, this thing sounds best off 3v, so I actually made it so that it runs from a little coin cell lithium battery. Very simple one transistor fuzz, with a big muff style tone control.
Hmmm... I think that's all of them, not counting multifx?
