Was just having a discussion with a friend who is categorising just music, and it came to what to call the band in question. "Smashing Pumpkins" or "The Smashing Pumpkins"
We ended up agreeing calling them "The Smashing Pumpkins"
fellow Ozphorians, what do you called them? The or no The

No "The"
I believe the "The" is added only for 'theatrical' effect.

THE-atrical. ha.
Um. I prefer the albums from when they had "the" on the album covers.

Never really thought about it actually, odd as that sounds. I like "The" to be honest.

What has it been:
"THE" - MCIS, TAFH, Adore, Machina I & II, Rotten Apples, 1991-2000, earphoria, Vieuphoria No "THE" - Gish, Peel Sessions, Lull, SD, Pisces, Zeitgeist, IAGW, American GOthic, Siamese Singles
So if you go by that - its 9 all. But for ultimate clarification you should always turn to the Simpsons: "Hi, Billy Corgan. Smashing Pumpkins."

I use "The" basically because its on mcis and when it comes down to it that's their definitive work as far as im concerned

i use "the" but i do so fairly unconsciously, only because it seems to flow a bit better

when i write it i always say Smashing Pumpkins, but if i'm talking about them it's 'the Smashing Pumpkins'. Dave Grohl also says his band is just called Foo Fighters, but obviously people are always going to put 'the' before it.

all of my SP songs are labeled as "The Smashing Pumpkins" (i went back and forth between "The" and "no The") but i usually go with either or. "The Smashing Pumpkins" sounds cooler, though.

way back when there was an interview were they addressed the band name, I think D'arcy said that smashing was not a verb. So it makes more sense to me for the band to be called The Smashing Pumpkins.

The Smashing Pumpkins - for the reason that sunkissed said with it being an adjective. They are a band, and entity etc. So calling them just Smashing Pumpkins doesn't make sense to me. I call other bands "The" as well - The Foo Fighters, The Offspring, The Presidents of the USA and so on....Plus it's also the name on MCIS, the album where it all began for me....

Smashing Pumpkins - From Gish to Mellon Collie era (and now Zeitgeist)
The Smashing Pumpkins - From Adore to Machina II
don't know why they adopted the "The" though
