We've all heard and debated Billy's comments of late about the structure of the band, and how they want to get close to the fanbase without it being creepy. I've been thinking a lot lately about something that hasn't been mentioned much recently, and thats the future sound of the band. This leaves me to ask: What sound would you like to hear from the band in the near future?
I'd like to hear some melodic stuff, along the lines of zwan. I'm not saying I want to hear zwan, but if they could mix some of the sound into the sp machine it would be fantastic. I'd love to hear some guitar sounds aka The shining path. I love the guitar solo in that song, it has such a great build up.
Disclaimer: I'm scared of being labeled as one of those fans who wants to hear the old sp sounds come back, but I'm not, I've always been for progression. I'd like to hear some zwan sounds turned into sp sound.

Jazz Fusion.
Ok seriously i would like to hear some of the older style stuff. I know it seems as though I am stuck in the past but that is what i like to hear the best. The new more acoustic stuff is excellent but isn't on the same level as mayonaise and soma except maybe 99 floors.

I find every persons definition of older stuff different, some people mean 93 Pumpkins, some 96 Pumpkins and now ... I've spoken to some people who mean Machina era when they say older stuff. I kind of agree with the mention of Zwan too, if by that you mean a positive more full sound to the new songs, with a lot of variation in the sound of music the create. Zwan really had a vast range of songs that managed somehow to sit so well next to each other ... Endless Summer - A New Poetry - Mary Star ... all 3 different songs, but could all sit next together in one show. Thats a direction I would like to see with their sound.
I guess Im wanting a more experimental side to the band to come forth, they've put together a great line up of talent / technical musicians ... lets not waste their talents. Tracks like 99 Floors, Song for a Son, Peace + Love and Owata have shown to me that Corgan can still write a strong mellow song ... while As Rome Burns (as forced as it sounds) is just insane in how much strength there is in his lyrics and the sound of the band. Jimmy is drumming better then ever, Ginger - Jeff and Lisa are definitely bringing a new strong element to the sound of the band ... the future is to be a strong one. So in a nut shell ... something experimental rock like Gish/preGish ... but with a bit of SD/Mellon Collie mixed in for a bit of a electrical feel to the rock, plus some trippy effects from Adore/Machina ...
So while talking about the future sound, should we look at the future involvement with the 3 members too? Would it follow the same path as when Zwan hit the studio, everything changed and crumbled ... or are Jeff, Ginger and Lisa different people, different values? They aren't like your Sweeney's, Pajo's and Paz'zzzz?
Just a question to throw out there.

When I hear billy sing the line 'set the controls to the heart of the sun' that's always the direction I want them to go into (not necessarily musically, but in terms of the feeling I get from his voice and the lyrics) this weird kind of mystic transcendental thing. Musically though I'd like them to continue with the acoustic work and the heavy stuff but find a new way to merge the two, since hearing Soma live I felt like some of the power is lost when the distortion kicks in, which I think Billy alludes to in that radio interview (http://hipstersunited.com/blog/archives/2008/12/q101-interview-footage.html ) where he says along the lines that when playing the hits it just doesn't work anymore, the energy with the crowd just isn't there, and I think this is really important, in terms of their motivation with songwriting; to write something which will have everyone losing their shit.

i gotta say that i definately prefer their "heavy" songs that still have powerful melodies. Songs like Cherub Rock and Everlasting Gaze stick in my mind. Though, I really enjoy their more recent songs. Tarantula stands out in my mind more so then GLOW, and I personally believe is lyrically stronger. The Rose March is a fantastic song as well in the way of fairly recent. So, I gotta say it, what they've been doing is just fine and they should continue being the band that could do no wrong by me.

I've said it many times, I feel like the more acoustic stuff that was uncovered at the residencies, american gothic and owata and song for a song sound like the kind of the direction that they want to take, and these new heavier songs seem somewhat forced...
I loved american gothic, and those new songs mentioned are great, I'd love to see them continue in that direction... Someone mentioned zwan, if they start playing Mary Star of the Sea, i'd die... If you ask me, that song (live versions, not the version with Jesus at the start) is the best thing Corgan/Chamberlin have done (admittedly Sweeney, Pajo and Paz would have had some input too)...

I think i'm in the same boat as Foxy. The first thing i thought was that, in hindsight, some of the songs off Zeitgeist (the heavier ones) seem a bit forced. I'd like to hear a more softer, raw acoustic sound along the lines of these new songs...i guess time will tell what happens. Billy did say a while ago he knew what he wanted to do with the next release didn't he? Have things changed? We may never know We've never really gotten the "4 songs in 1" thing since BC and JC started working together by themselves, would a few of those epic songs be a winner?

I wouldn't mind seeing a return to things like the beginning is the end is the beginning, eye and that sort of stuff. I really like what I'm hearing of late tho

For me, I just want the poetry of the lyrics to get better. I think "Zeitgeist" lacked the beautiful way Billy used to put words together. A song like "The Rose March" brought that back, but I just love the lyrics that he wrote during the Mellon Collie and Adore era's.
I finally heard "G.L.O.W." the other night and despite some cool elements, it just didn't thrill me. I just felt like it was boring middle of the road american rock music, and the Pumpkins have never been that kind of band. I still enjoy it and will buy it and in it's own way it will Charm me, but I think Billy should just get a bit more experimental with his approach. Take the cock out of the rock.
Machina, Adore and Mellon Collie are three of the greatest albums of all time. If the band were able to combine that kind of sound but truly evolve it, then I'd be happy. I'll always support and follow what Billy does, but enough with the Riffs.
That's me personally though.
