Billy will forge on. They will become a band like Sabbath, The Cure etc ... a constant revolving line up with Corgan at the helm. The sound direction will depend on Billy's mood and "vibe" ... however I'll say it, Billy alone in the studio sometimes can be a fucking awesome thing ... or a fucking bad thing. Time will tell, as with everything. Im just in shock, just felt like we were getting some stability with the band ... I bloody wrote in my first article at the start of this year: "The last few eras we experienced as fans have all ended without a follow up. Machina for the Smashing Pumpkins was not only the end of the era but also the end of the band as we knew it. In 2000 there was no encore and no next chapter for the Pumpkins. Even the post-Pumpkin projects of Zwan, TheFutureEmbrace and the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex have all ended without any second chapter. For the past 8 years we have experienced this recurring cycle. We fall in love with a new projects direction, sound and energy only to start all over again with something else. So no wonder we are sometimes confused as a fan base when we are not used to this stability in which we currently find ourselves surrounded. It is a foreign concept that we haven't really experienced for a long time, but once you realise that there isn't going to be an ending any time soon you can begin to let go of the past a lot easier than before. So in the certainty that the future is definitely bright for the Smashing Pumpkins, it works well for both the band and the fans. From the interviews at the end of last year with Billy and Jimmy it's pretty clear that they are in a good place with the Pumpkins, knowing that the next chapter is beginning and we know what we can possibly expect." www.smashingpumpkins.com/pages/articles/2009-next-chapterWell ... I didn't see THIS coming did I?

I know you're not meant to ditch one of your favourite bands even when they do things that you don't agree with, but seriously, I don't know how to take this band seriously now. It honestly is just Billy Corgan solo.
I can only hope the quality of music gets stronger. That's my only hope, that the music gets more amazing.

who wouldve seen it coming though? last we knew it all seemed rosy. GLOW and FOL were released and it seemed all engines were firing.
i get the feeling that youre taking it all a bit to heart Sunky, like you feel you are somehow responsible.

Oh no, don't feel responsible at all ... what I meant by the early out burst is ... we all thought it was fine. We all thought that once Billy stopped on the political stuff and ticketmaster talk etc ... that he and Jimmy would get back to making music. Now this? Like I said for the first in a decade we had stability, then we get fucked over ... again.
This makes GLOW the last song that Jimmy recorded, as far as we know, as Smashing Pumpkins. FOL was a left over from Zeitgeist sessions.

I think it is a great thing that Jimmy has left the pumpkins.
Jimmy's drumming was amazing, but throughout the albums it never changed.
Some of Billy's musical ideas have been fairly stale of late. Maybe a new engine behind the band will push it into a new direction that with Jimmy wouldn't have been able to happen.
To be honest, after hearing GLOW and FOL (especially FOL), and seeing Today on the VISA add, I had nearly lost all interest in the band.
Now that Jimmy has left, I can confidently say that I am EXCITED about what Billy will be able to come up with.
Heres to the future!

I agree to a certain extent with closer, the most recent activity of the pumpkins had left me somewhat disheartened. 'Adore closes, another opens' was a headline when Adore came out that i'll never forget, and i loved Adore. Although obviously a completely different era for the band and Billy himself, personally i look forward to what will happen next. For me it will either be another opening of my heart to the pumpkins, or the last goodbye to the band i held closest to my heart.
