From SP.com As reported earlier, Billy Corgan has been in close proximity to audio engineer Kerry Brown. The reason being that Billy is working alongside Kerry to create some new demos! In regards to the demos, Billy has said "It's going well and I'm very happy and in a great mood. I'm not sad (about what has happened), actually excited to be working on new SP!" In addition, Billy hints that "The songs sound like Spring!" There are FIVE demos in total that he is currently working on and he anticipates the official recording process to begin sometime in May. www.smashingpumpkins.com/pages/news/billy-in-studio-creating-5-new-demos

I know we should take everything he says this early in the process with a grain of salt, but I like the sounds of that.

yes i've seen billy play Tonight, Tonight live on the adore tour with a 12 string
that's live though... buttt i'm sure there's some songs in studio which would of been with a 12 sting...

yeah definately seen the 12 string in live performances.
I like the photo: 12 string, organ, billy's back to us! haha.
So it really is happening then, this is fantastic.

Yes, live Tonight Tonight...
The Tale Of Dusty & Pistol Pete is the first one that comes to mind.
Thirty-Three sounds like 12 strings might be in there?
Believe it or not, there's a distorted direct 12 string acoustic track in the rhythm bed of Zero.
Pox? Or that might just be high chord voicings.
Kind of sounds like a 12 string electric on Atom Bomb from FAEOMM.
The acoustic guitars in Crush sound like 12 strings.
My Dahlia from Light Into Dark.
Whir?

As a non-music guy, what is it that makes the 12-string so "special"? does it have a more full sound? ... are all the 12 strings tuned differently or is that 2 are the same as per a 6 string? (sorry if that doesn't make sense ... I just had a lunch at beer ... fuzzzy)
hmmmm, perhaps with the interest in the photo might be a good look back at songs that have used the 12 string.

i would say a brighter, more jangly sound.
i think mayonaise as well?

each second string is usually tuned flat, i think. so the 2 top strings would be E and Eb and so on. i think.

that's such an emotive image... Billy all by himself sitting in front of an organ with a 12 string acoustic. hopefully this means we'll be getting what i've been wanting to see for a while now - darker, emotive acoustic songs ala Adore.
for some reason I have a feeling that Starla has some 12 string acoustic amongst the chaos.

cat - No no no. That would sound awful!
Sunky, you're pretty much right, kind of.
12 string tuning is basically the same as standard, in EADGBe order from low to high, except that each string is a doubled 'course' of two strings, and one of the pair is tuned higher, in the case of the EADG strings, or unison (the same) for the B and high e strings.
Chimey, jangly, full are words i'd use to describe the 12 string sound.
Compare the guitar picking in Stumbleine to that of Dusty/Pistol Pete.
The acoustic break at 3:30 in Mayo sounds like a 12 string as well, yes. But any other acoustics in that are 6 string.
I don't know which part of Starla would have it, so I'm thinking that one's a "no". There's certainly tons of microsynth on it though...

hahaha @ sunky's post re: lunch at beer
i'm glad brendo is here to fill us in, i played a twleve string once, happened to accidentally play blind willie mctell (bob dylan outtake) and thought that it was a beautiful instrument but couldn't tell you want pumpkins songs used it!
but having played it the one time i'd say that there's a kind of tolkien folkish minstrel sound to it that i'd say also evokes the delight of the buttery sun all drippin' down on me, look ma!

Yes - because a lot of medieval instruments were had multiple strings per course. "Celtic" is one word I've heard used to describe 12 strings.

Maybe the new songs sound like the movement "Spring" in Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons'

A lute with 8 courses of two, and a modern 12 string. spoilered because of width.

so does anyone want to argue about what spring sounds like?
The closest I could think of in a pumpkins song is mama, just the cruisy accoustic sound

a bit off topic... but Once Upon A Time has always sounded like an autumn song to me. so i reckon, spring songs would be along those lines but maybe a bit upbeatish like Zwan/Untitled. on another off topic note... i've found it hard to get into Zwan. sorry. i think Billy might even be saying that the songs signifies a bit of a rebirth for the bandl. after all, spring is often called the season of rebirth. plus i think it's now spring in the states... so maybe the change of season's influenced him.

No need to apologise ha-ha. i'm not entirely sure why i put the "sorry" there. i tried on multiple occasions to listen to Mary, Star of the Sea before i eventually listened to the full thing. maybe because Billy's heart wasn't in it i just felt a bit disheartened by it... i don't know. i'll probably give it another listen though. never know... it might end up growing on me.

The real gold for zwan is in the live recordings. cast a stone love lies in ruin permanance the list goes on, amazing stuff. My fav is prob chrysanthemum Anyway it's funny that zwan pops up when we talk about spring. Do we mean happy? Zwan was mostly happier music compared to sp. I'd love to hear more zwan sounds in sp.
