Hopefully this will generate a bit of discussion around the place! Just wondering who voted for the Hottest 100 and what you voted for? I don't really listen to JJJ these days, but this is always a bit of fun. For me, it was probably just as much voting for the band, rather than a song that could scrape in. I voted a couple of times so i could sneak an extra song in. The Stone Roses - She Bangs The Drums The Cure - A Night Like This Dan Kelly and the Alpha Males - Babysitters Of the World Unite! Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 Jeff Buckley - Grace Led Zeppelin - Kashmir The Beatles - Something The Shins - Saint Simon Radiohead - There ThereYou Am I - If We Can't Get It Together Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Red Right Hand Woo! - Couldn't decide on a Ryan Adams tune so left him out (Like he will get in anyways...) Here's the 1998 version: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_J_Hottest_100,_1998#Hottest_100_of_all_time So.....you??

I had no patience for the shortlist, i just went through all the music i have and basically a long hard think...that thing took ages. Laughed when i went through it and saw the Liverpool FC theme and The Rainbow Connection by Kermit the Frog had been added though. Do The Bartman also i believe.

Ha! Love it Foxy ... perhaps my multiple Ozphoria accounts did the same. Smashing Pumpkins - Mayonaise (but don't worry, I voted for 1979 thanks to Ozphoria) Foo Fighters – Everlong Pulp – Common People You Am I – If We Can’t Get it Together The Smiths – There is A Light That Never Goes Out The Beatles – Oh! Darling The Flaming Lips – Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt.1 Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart The Cure – Lovesong Manic Street Preachers – If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next Ramblings about the songs here: www.sunkyspeaks.com/2009/06/28/my-hottest-100-of-all-time-list/

My list is as follows:
Crowded House - Don't Dream Its Over Electric Light Orchestra - Telephone Line Smashing Pumpkins, The - 1979 R.E.M. - The One I Love The Who - Baba O'Riley AC/DC - Back In Black David Bowie - Life On Mars? Split Enz - One Step Ahead The Cure - Close To Me Huey Lewis & The News - Power Of Love
-------------
From what I've seen around various internet haunts, I think a lot of people forgot that it was 'Hottest 100 of All Time' and not just 'Songs You Like From the Last 5 Years'... Meh. Each to their own I guess!

ok so I voted again on sunday with a different email. went for
SP - Snail Deep Purple - Lazy The Mars Volta - Roulette Dares (The Haunt of...) Dan Kelly and the Alpha's - Babysitters of the World Unite! Tool - Lateralus TV on the Radio - Wolf Like Me Sonic Youth - Teen Age Riot Isaac Hayes - Walk on By Curtis Mayfield - Move on Up Stevie Wonder - Superstitious
I think there's a good mix of old and newish, Most recent being DK and TV on the Radio, both 3 years ago... I know where your coming from Bree, alot of people are voting for MGMT and stuff like that, which I think in a few years time people might cringe at the thought. I suggest that one criterion for 'of all time' is that it stands some test of time but I'm going to get philosopical on your asses...
Has there been anything released in the last couple of years that you can see standing the test of time and making its way onto future lists?

After much deliberation, my votes ended up as:
SP-1979 The Flaming Lips- Do You Realize?? The Cure- Pictures of You Crowded House- Don't Dream It's Over Bjork- Joga Prince and the Revolution- Purple Rain David Bowie- Heroes Bob Dylan- Like A Rolling Stone TV on the Radio- Wolf Like Me The Go-Betweens- Streets of Your Town
I think the list will undoubtedly be mostly made up of recent stuff though, for 2 reasons- the average jjj listener is the teen demographic who dont listen to that much beyond whats being currently played, and also there's probably less conjecture over say something like Electric Feel, which is in all honesty a pretty great song, probably not all time worthy, but still good. But I think the big bands of recent years will just have far more pull than perhaps the more specific tastes needed for old stuff, and bands with big solid catalogues are immediatelydisadvantaged if noone can agree on one definitive song too. Going to be interesting to see what manages to get thru from the oldies collection, Bohemian Rhapsody should poll high I'd say.
For me Wolf Like Me is the song from the last few years that holds the most weight, and I can probably say it will remain in high regard, but I don't know how many others feel this way, and it's not a song you could really compare to the pop cannon... time shall tell I guess.

There were so many fave songs and fave bands that i had to leave out in the end. I can only really say that this was my top 10 on the day i submitted it, as it will always be something that changes.
In no order, and with a very LIFE-Y sort of feel to it:
A Day In The Life - The Beatles A Design For Life - Manic Street Preachers Grace - Jeff Buckley Heroes - David Bowie Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division Once In A Lifetime - Talking Heads Precious Things - Tori Amos Stand Inside Your Love - Smashing Pumpkins There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths Where Is My Mind? - The Pixies

Yeah I was pretty happy with it overall... To have got Sex on Fire out of the way so early I think is a good sign. Plus two of my songs have been picked!
Bon Iver also seems to be a bit contentious, If there was one song from last year I would have voted for, that would have been it so I was happy to see it there.

yeah its been pretty solid so far, few old gems popping up ... surprise so many people would count Dammit in their top 10 of all time. But I guess for most that song got them into other punk bands, so it makes sense. While I'd like to see songs by Jeff Buckley appear higher, I guess its expected for these songs to change since last time.
I can't wait to do a comparison between the 1998 > 2009 all time lists. Will be great.
Also so SP made it with Today ... think BWBW or 1979 have better chances? Today was in at 40 in the 1998 countdown, came in at 78 this year. Thats a huge drop, but expected ... isn't it?

Dammit I can understand being in there, it was released just at the time I was coming into music and really resonated at the time so I can imagine there are a good deal of people who feel great affection to it. Sure it's pretty immature, but its also hsincere and has some great pop hooks. Heaps happy about today and grace, both suggest theres a couple more to come.

I think each band i've voted for has had a song in bar Dan Kelly (And that was just me representing for the DK), only 2 actual songs i voted for though dammit!
I hadn't heard Berlin Chair in a while, i was home sick and listening when it came on, it sounded fanstastic. Still an Aussie classic.
That last 10 was interesting...lets see what this afternoon brings.

In the end I think it was 4 of my 10 that made it in. That is pretty good. Some of the voting really surprised me (Foo FIghters in the top 10, was it? hmm).
Like some of you may have seen (twittering) i was a little sad at the lack of women in the list. I though Tori or PJ would have made an appearance. It goes to show me just how my music taste fits in with that of the larger population, though. Songs I never doubted would be in there didn't make it at all.
