Boy am I awake early. (No, not for this announcement, a late uni assignment. Seriously.) www.smashingpumpkins.com/pages/news/announcement-from-billy-corgan-about-new-smashing-pumpkins-albumI’m happy to finally announce the plans for the new Smashing Pumpkins album. Recording began yesterday, September 15th, 2009 on the new record which will be entitled ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope’. The album will feature 44 songs, 4 of which are now being recorded. My desire is to release a song at a time beginning around Halloween of this year, with each new release coming shortly after until all 44 are out. Each song will be made available absolutely for free, to anyone anywhere. There will be no strings attached. Free will mean free, which means you won’t have to sign up for anything, give an email address, or jump through a hoop. You will be able to go and take the song or songs as you wish, as many times as you wish. We will however sell highly limited edition EP’s (of 4 songs each times 11), and details of how those EP’s will be made available are still being worked out. Because the songs themselves will be free, the EP’s will be more like collectors items for the discerning fan who will want the art itself, along with the highest possible audio quality available. The EP’s will be more like mini-box sets rather than your normal cd single. We may also offer other variations for sale, say for example a digital single with a demo version of a song. The commitment that is most important is the one I’m making to you: that the music of ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope’ will be available for free to everyone. All 44 songs: free for ALL. When the entire album is finished, it will be compiled into a deluxe box set which will also be made available for sale. Those who have bought the EP’s need not worry, as the box set will not be a recompilation of the limited edition pieces. The story of the album is based on ‘The Fool’s Journey’, as signified in the progress of the Tarot. It is my intention to approach this by breaking down the journey of our life here into four phases as made by these different characters; the Child, the Fool, the Skeptic, and the Mystic. The music of ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope’ harkens back to the original psychedelic roots of The Smashing Pumpkins: atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty. I already have 53 songs written for the record, so I am quite confident that I already have much of the material that I would need to undertake such an extensive project. I am very committed to seeing this album through to its completion and very, very excited about the prospect of delivering new Smashing Pumpkins music to you in a unique and exciting way.

Hahaha, well I dug it (finally joined that bandwagon, or did I miss out when digg was still cool?)

Digg was never cool. Haha.
Well this is the structure Billy has talked about for a while now. The 44 songs, method of release. It's in writing and he seems excited by the idea so I'm sure it won't fail. I'm really excited, artwork looks great too. Has that soft beauty I love about the Pumpkins.
Tarot card theme too? Funny the poster Kerrie did for the tribute night was tarot card themed.

damn! digg was never cool huh? sheesh. By the way, for pumpkins nerd-dom I've got a little thingy for you guys. The picture that came with the announcement above, it's file name is dyptych4 - diptychs were popular in the same period and emerged at the same time as the tarot.
it's all in the mystery you know?

So wait. He announced something he already announced in his big "state of the union" rant like 6 months ago?
The only new things here are confirmation of the process, freeness, and the title.
My ground is not broken, nor have the lies been burnt off my soul.
I'm not a massive fan of the name... yet. At least he's given me three years to get used to it.

i like the idea of the 11 eps. i hope they are released one at a time rather than waiting till the end, otherwise ill probably go cheap and get the box set at the end. btw, i love the firs comment on digg

I expect the 4 song EP's to be released as the project goes along, else why would people by those if they can just get the box set at the end?
The big question is, because you just know people are going to complain is ... what format will the digital releases come out in? Just MP3? or MP3 / FLAC? ... they better do a FLAC just to keep everybody happy else that would annoy many.
Also I just tweeted this, but you think 44 was chosen as this could be when Billy is looking at finishing this project 2011 ... and he would be 44 years old.

i hope theres an option to buy all 11 eps in advance, rather than a try your luck at getting one of 10,000 of each of the eps or something like that.

that's interesting, sunky, the 44 thing.
I don't see why the project can't be finished sooner. How long were they in the studio for MCIS? I'm saying that it's feasible that it won't take 2 years.
Shit, I just realised that American Gothic is a 4 track EP.
So, that's the kind of listening experience we're talking about. That's awesome. At first I was thinking, oh yeah it's great that we're going to get 4 songs released at a time but I also wondered what that would feel like/be like, and realised that we already know!

Well 2011 isn't that long away ... we've got 13/14 months until it is 2011 (going from the Halloween start date). 11 releases ... I love Corgan, but he isn't going to get 1 out a month. I'll claim it now. The FINAL release will come out on March 17th 2011. Corgan's 44th Birthday. BOOM!

hahaha shit, I keep thinking it's 2008 just like I keep thinking I'm 21 when I'm 23 now, getting fucking old and time keeps running away!
Ok, I'm in on this one. I claim that the FINAL release will be on the 20th of November 2011.
shotgun!
also, sunky did you see this on the o-board by poster moonbug in relation to your 44 speculation...?
"also note -there are 22 trump cards - so it could be a mirroring - the dark and light side of each trump card - the diptych he released with the announcement - along with his previous themes - would support that
one is light, one is dark..."

Pitchfork gave it a positive review ... pitchfork.com/news/36514-massive-new-smashing-pumpkins-undertaking-44-songs-all-for-free/WOW. So Billy and Kerry were on Dark Matter again, with Dave. They discussed few things with the album, Billy hinted the first song could be the same song that "Dave was soloing on when a girl licked his hand" ... that would make the song, The Trip. Sounds like an appropriate rocking song to start with ... with the main lyric "its time to take a trip" ... and this being called a "journey" of music. There is going to be a recording of the interview upped on SP.com soon, I'll post the link when it is live. Download here: radio.the-zomb.com/bc-interview2009-09-16.mp3

I, for one, can't wait to hear the first results of the new mega album.
Acoustic ballads aren't really my thing anymore, so I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth (ears) into some rawk Pumpkins style.

The Trip... that's the one that sounds like Spilled Milk and GLOW, right? A little like both, but yes ... but also doesn't contain any C'mons! (I think)

I'm not a massive fan of the name... yet. At least he's given me three years to get used to it. Mellon Collie... isnt/wasnt that inspiring a name either. We all got used to that quick enough. If the music's good - the name is almost irrelevent

Yeah, by the time I'd posted the EP thought on another website I remembered Lull.
The name has grown on me a little, although I am wary of mentioning it to my friends because it does sound ridiculous. Having said that though, MCIS isn't exactly an album name that I'd throw around lightly if it weren't for the fact that it was so successful and of course, awesome.
So do you think that Teargarden by Kaleidyscope implys that "Teargarden" is something made/written/performed/etc by a character name Kaleidyscope?
Or perhaps the "teargarden" is viewed through a kaleidyscope?
It's unfortunate in this case that titles are capitalised, as Kaleidyscope could denote a common noun, I guess we wait.
I know I know, highly speculative, it's one in the morning and I don't want to do this Plato essay.

Had a listen to the youtube live Spirits in the Sky songs last night, especially the four rumoured to be released for the first ep, and i am just not sure about them. To me they sound more like the folsky type songs that Zwan were playing live - Roma Girl, Obscured etc. I was kind of left thinking that they do not sound like sp songs at all, but then none of their releases have ever sounded like their old work.
