All I want to know is, what happened to one song a month? I love all the songs so far but its been way over a month since the Astral Planes was released....

Yeah Billy really has dropped the ball with getting these out on a regular basis. It is very disappointing. 4 songs in 6-7 months with no sign of the new one anytime soon, plus the tour soon too ... he might not start finalising the next song till after the tour. In August.

I actually think the next songs are written and recorded even, the issue is to market the box set properly is taking /has taken a lot longer than anyone (including Billy ) would have predicted.
if you release the next songs digitally, how do you keep the same level of excitement for the box set for the previous songs when it comes out?
Also if you get offered money for festivasls /tours etc, are you going to turn it down? the bills have to be paid somehow.
I'm not too dissapointed that we dont have the next 4 songs already

ultimately what you're saying is you dont care that billy said they'll be released one a month and he's changed his mind now. which is fine for you. but if he cant keep up with it, why say it at the start?
and how hard can it be to prepare something in advance? (for how to market the boxset)

I'm with you Scott. I look at what the band Ash have done, a new song (and video) every 2 weeks since the start of the year. Basically 26 songs over 52 weeks. Sure some of the videos are just live recordings but they are something. Also for paid members every 2 weeks they receive a 7" vinyl with a demo b-side.
They've also toured. They've also just released a CD (with demos) with the first 13 songs in a physical format.
Yes they spent a portion of last year getting prepared, but they've stuck to their guns on what they said they would release. Billy has said one thing and delivered another, people aren't going to keep in interest with this (besides hardcore fans) unless some sort of structure and routine is put in place.

I'm hoping that the next 4, maybe 8 songs are done and ready to go so that they can be released while the band is on tour.
Another possiblity is that the third EP could be recorded live.

i would consider that the height of lazyness of its recorded live on stage.

how about like the 5 songs from If All Goes Wrong? Not a live band in front of an audience, but perhaps just as a full live band?

im fine with that, and i love those songs like that, but on stage in front of an audience i think is incredibly lazy.

Perhaps as a way of collecting all the songs together (say a 22 song set in the middle of the process) ... that might be cool. But yeah, 44 songs all studio has to happen.

"Billy has said one thing and delivered another" how long have you been fans for? You can expect Billy to be consistently inconsistent. He always does this, but he delivers results ... at some point.
It's not his fault, he always has grandoise plans that are too hard to pull off. machina zwan solo reforming the band I'm just happy with what we get when we get it.

Oh yeah, please don't take that as a complaint it was more a "plans changed" again type of comment. This is what we have now, I'm happy it is still going along but I just feel that if it had more structure to it people (besides the hardcore fans) would be paying attention to it.

So yesterday Billy linked to a picture on Kristin Burns website from The Viper Room show. However crafty SP fans saw that in the same directory she also had a picture of the TBK whiteboard, of future songs and titles. Check them out and other pictures too. www.smashingpumpkins.com/board/index.php?showtopic=12319Also in an interview done this week Billy said the next EP will be released for the start of the tour in Cleveland July 6th, now does that mean the WHOLE ep? Or just the first song? He said they are also planning to record in September. So judging by the current dates, they finish touring around mid August in Korea. Doesn't leave much time for an Australian tour. All the stuff is up on the main site.

Don't mind it... Pretty catchy... Actually, I quite like it...
Mike's drumming isn't giving me the shits on this too... Not sure if it's the production or if he's just not hitting them as hard...
I think this song shows the ultimate flaw in the song at a time/EP response... This song would fit into an album or series of songs really well, but when it's out on it's own after waiting what seems so long - It doesn't have the same impact...
There's no doubt the album format is on the decline, but I don't think this method is the answer. This isn't a jibe at Billy, just a general comment

I dig it, I dig it more when I try not to think of this as being a song from the Smashing Pumpkins though, y'know? Good song in it's own right but it just doesn't "feel" like it's from one of my favourite bands, whereas Rome Burns totally has that vibe... wonder how that'll translate recorded.

I didn't think I'd like this so much, considering the live version never did much for me. The fuzz bass line is a nice choice from ol' Bill. Foxy I know what you're saying, Billy even admitted that not every song is perfect using this method. ""As songs come out over the next few years, you'll see a musical progression of where I'd like to end up. It's more of a musical journey, the album. Every song is not meant to be perfect." www.mlive.com/entertainment/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2010/07/smashing_pumpkins_bring_first.htmlAs for Freak, the vocals (besides the la la la's) I actually feel like Billy is singing with some passion and power with the song. First time in a long time.

weird he said that, as that was the whole reason of releasing it one at a time, as its all singles kinda thing. oh well.
as for the songs, im kinda liking them all. in the way you can like pretty pop songs. theres nothing to connect to like on the other pumpkins releases, but as pop songs from any band, they arent bad to listen to.

haha, well, obviously it's hard to be a smashing pumpkins fan most of the time For me it was this show that changed my mind about how things were going: 2010/04/17 - Space 15 Twenty; Los Angeles, CA, US - www.spfc.org/tours/date.html?tour_id=1402 - Admittedly it was hearing tristessa, I kept thinking, jesus he might just be able to pull this off after a few more shows. It's the first time I've heard him play a song like bwbw where I didn't want to skip it myself, it's still not a song I care for (because I have heard it a thousand times, not because I never liked it) but there seems to be some kind of renewed energy to the performance. I was talking to a friend about it and he felt that the pumpkins were 'merely' a cover band now, and this actually provoked an interesting thought for me; the energy I was referring to before, it reminds me of the kind of energy a young band has for the material that inspired them, with the mistakes and the kind of bravado that comes with the boldness of trying to pull off something that 'other people' have done. I know that Billy is the principle songwriter and so on, but I think there might be something to the analogy. Ha, anyway, after seeing those clips of soot and stars and so on I kept thinking, holy shit, don't ruin it billy, but then there was that weird widow wake my mind on letterman or leno or whatever...haha, like I said, hard to be a pumpkins fan. The viper room showed me that the energy is still there and they're getting it together as a band, ok, so I am really excited to think that when we see the pumpkins they won't be dragging around all of the bullshit that got in the way in the past. The other interesting thing so far has been the press coverage, it's basically an inversion of the 20th anniversary tour; the critics/magazines range from the practically gushing to restrained admittance that the show they are reviewing was actually good! However, it seems like there are a few disgruntled fans who don't like setlists, band members blah blah blah...of course. I can't say that I have really felt the pumpkins 'vibe' (whatever the fuck that may be) from any of the tbk material, wait, I tell a lie, I did feel it from that song "Lonely is the Name" from the Ustream thing a while back when Jeff was doing his shoegaze wailing, you know, that was something that was definitely missing from Zeitgeist, it was something that James used to do well (i'm no guitar tech) where he would play a nice simple melody over what Billy was doing, like the kind of one string guitar melody that bands like the cure do...anyway I'll stop flooding the thread before Scott tells me off for making him read

Freak starts off really good...then kind of just turns bleh, right at the time that melodious guitar kicks in. It's kind of like he does it deliberately: so this is what you want, well fuck you, you aren't getting it. The lyrics again are pretty ordinary (sweet mother earth, sacred bodies etc).
Ironically Billy sums up exactly what i am thinking halfway through the song with the lyric: "Do you know the score, cause i'm so fucking bored"
The worst thing for me is that there are numerous demos from the past that are a lot better than these releases.

I really like the new song "Freak". It's probably my favourite of the 5 songs released.
I mentioned this earlier in the thread but I'll be 50 by the time all these songs are released.

Billy said on his recent Ustream that the Australia tour has fallen through but they will be coming back. He spoke a lot about places he would like to go, China, India, South Africa etc...but the Australian tour isn't going to happen...september, october are taken up with touring and recording - no info on further times. damn

mmm - just re-read my previous post - I didn't mean to imply that there won't ever be a pumpkins tour, just that the projected 'immediate' future of a pumpkins tour in Australia has fallen through, but I definitely got the impression from the stream that he wants to come.
