Hey man :-) It depends on what ur after of course. And what kind of sounds/players sounds do u appreciate? I have a whole lot of differernt peddles and effects, but if ur just startting out u should consider a couple of things. Like with anything, you get what u pay for, so don't buy a nasty sounding cheap ass peddle now, thinking to get a better one later. And don't be affraid to get second hand stuff (just test it out first to be sure), u can find some cool rare discontinued stuff that way (i found a great Boss MZ-2 that way), plus it can be cheaper - sometimes. Have u considered a multi-effects unit, they're digital of course but some of the mods can be quite good, i'd recommend Boss or Line 6, stay away from Zoom and brands like that for the above reason. What sort of gear have u got now? Hope I've been some help, let me know how u go or if u'd like some more info or whatever (yes i am a guitar nerd)

well, playing is a strong word. ;D i've ahd an acoustic for about 3 years (hardly ever played it) and an electric with my brother which was just some cheap thing, 200 bucks foir guitar and amp, and i'm just starting to try and get into it again. A friend of mine has some massive cool looking digital effects pedal, which looks and sounds awesome but something i could never afford And i didnt realise, but the choice ahs already been made on the pedals.. for x-mas i'm getting an overdrive and heavy metal pedal... dont know what brand though...

i have pedals out the ying yang, and i'd go with the pedal i bought last and resisted until i found it too cheap to refuse... a boss TU-2 tuner pedal... being in tune is fairly important that or a simple cheap distortion, boss sd1, ehx bigmuff, something you can click on for diff parts is pretty important...

yeah, tuning is so important that after 2 years of having a guitar i decided rather then getting my mate to tune the guitar every couple of weeks when i see him, i'd go all out and buy a tuner off ebay gotta say though, the accoustic stays amazing in tune!

Yep have a tuner for fine tunning, but train your ears as best you can too for notes and tuning.

i have a boss blues driver, it is great! it's not that heavy and has a very crisp crunch distortion sound. i'm in the progress of finding a Line6 DL4 on ebay, currently have a bid on one, these pedals are sooooo aswesome, been wanting one for ages. i also have a bid on a: Boss PH-2 Super Phaser and Boss CH-1 Super Chorus. I'm slowly building my pedal collection i do recomend the boss BD2 though

Yeah, I've been thinking of getting a Blues Driver myself, its more for overdrive and not for distortion, so yeah, not that heavy. They also work well as a signal booster for a distortion pedal put after it in an effects chain, using a low volumn on the BD. I would like one for the solo's on Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Fat Old Sun, Have a Cigar, and other awsome Gilmour solos from the Floyd!

I've got a BOSS ME-8. They're not bad, but I sort of want to get a few analogue effect units, because I'm not a great fan of the digital sound of the multiple effects unit.
I would love to get a Fender Blender to get some of the sounds that Billy got on Siamese Dream. I also wouldn't mind a Mu-Tron BiPhase and a Big-Muff PI!! I guess I'd also love to have a JCM800 to go with it, to round out the Siamese Dream capabilities!
In my rig I've got:
* Fender Telecaster (bridge pick-up replaced with a DiMazio Chopper T that can be switched between humbucker and single-coil) * Fender 112 Deluxe Solid-State 100 Watt Amp * Taylor Acoustic 214E * Marshall AS50R Acoustic Amp * BOSS ME-8 Multiple Effects Unit * BOSS Expression Pedal

the fender blender is only useful for certain sounds - the middle big of bullet, for example. its THAT sound. or slunk on vieuphoria.
big muff is more towarsd the siamese dream thing, but only if you layer it. also, cherub rock isn't predominantly big muff if i remember correctly.
also, billys jcm800's were modded with very clean poweramp tubes, remember... so you'd almost be better off getting a clean amp to run into rather than the 800.

I've modded my strat, so its basically a Billy strat already. You could do the same if you want his set-up. (which one though SD/MCIS or Zeitgeist strats?)

LOL. wot kinda strat do you have and what did you do to it? I don't even have a strat myself. i've got an epiphone dot (335).... when i was thinking about what kind of gtr to get, i sort of steered clear of strats on the reasoning that i was musically too influenced by billy anyway, so i wanted something that would take me away from that sound. now i think fuck that, i love billys sound so why not embrace it with a pale emulation i wouldn't want an SD-era type strat if that means lace sensors. mcis would be cool. or zeitgeist..... just on an aesthetic note, i absolutely love the deep 'blonde' (?) colour of the maple fingerboards on the '57 strats. i dont know what the treatment, or vanish, or whatever is, but they look so much better than the pale maple you see on most non-rosewood gtrs.....

A strat is a BIG part of billys sound, running a big muff live needs a strat and get a eq pedal as well. I used to use a lp but once i bought a strat (which i denied for ages), i found that sp flavour.

Its often a cliche to say - but its true - tone is expressed through your fingers. A guitarist playing through different gear, is always gonna sound like him/herself no matter what. Thats an element you can't really quantify. Gear is great! And everyone wants that "next piece of equipment." But thats something thats to keep in mind too. Practise!

If you want a cheap fender, but can't afford a USA one, I'd recommend getting a Mexican built Fender over a Squire. The Mexican ones can be quite good value, but you get what u pay for.
