Let's get some discussion going on the guitars, amps and effects that they will be using in the studio and live for Zeitgeist.
That 30 seconds of Tarantula sounded very Lace sensor + Big Muss + Marshall sound, which was SD/MCIS.
What does everone think they are using and may use?
Game on.

That promo photo of billy from a couple of weeks back had him with one of his lace sensor strats (I creamed my jeans when I saw that He'll probably be using his JCM-800 "Soul Head" too.

Billy's strats are confirmed, in those photos I saw, he's using lace sensors in a Fender 1970's re-issue Stratocaster - with the bigger headstock. Standard bridge also. Jeff is using a Gibson SG, Custom; Three humbuckers.

Yeah, the larger headstocks don't look as good to me.

We all know Jimmy contributes alot to the pumpkins' sound too, Jimmy's using a Yamaha Maple Custom Nouveau in Silver Sparkle 14x12, 10x8, 13x9 out front 16x16, 18x16 floor toms with an 8x7 inbetween the 2 22x18 kick I love that he hasn't changed his drum setup. Can't tell what snare he's using, maybe his signature, also a side snare, probably a 12" or 13". I think he's gone from a 12" splash to a 14" crash that normally sits between his hats and 14" tom, can't tell.

Jeff is using a Gibson SG, Custom; Three humbuckers. That's exactly what I thought as well. If you have a closer look though (especially in the Rock Am Ring DVD performance video), you can see that Billy's pickups are actually more like Seymour Duncan 'Hotrail' pickups, rather than Lace Sensors. LS aren't humbucking (still single coil), but 'Hotrails' are humbucking- which is why the sound is so much 'punchier'. Here's a pick of what they look like (still fit in a single coil housing): Sketchy about the black strat (used for Today, BWBW), but you can definitely see that the white strat he's using (for Shame and Silverfuck) have Hotrails (or similar - might not be Seymour Duncan), and not LS. You can see the two metal strips that run through each pickup which give it away. In any case, bloody sensational to see him using Fenders' again more frequently.... PS - NathanC - Awesome idea for a thread. Can't wait to see what he pulls out this time round. Like the Diezel head he's using? That thing is so loud it could be accused of homicide.

Yeah, Lace sensors also use a ceramic magnet, rather than being wound around magnetic poles. The magnetic field is more even. The Red ones have an output of 14.5k, (which is about the same as a humbucker) I've got them in my strat too. Oh yeah, SD mini-rails. My old guitar teacher has them on his strat "ultra." Nice! Your right, its awsome to see Billy's "come home" to strats and fender again.

I'm secretley yearning for him to pull out his old '57 strat with the laces' and rip into some Quiet, Ruby or Mayonnaise though...... Here's to hoping!!

Hell yeah man about the 57' In an old issue of Guitar Magazine Billy sites that as his favorite guitar that he owns. But that was back in 96' He wipped it out for the farewell shows.

Very capable of getting the Pumpkins sound.

Out of interest, has anyone ever played a strat with the "noiseless" single-coil pick-ups? I heard that they were supposed to have succeeded the lace sensors, taking all the good things about them, but producing a single-coil sound without the hum or unnecessary feedback.

They're dimarzio. I guess we'll find out when billy's signature model comes out which pickups they are, billy himself doesnt seem to know if you watch the 'ask a pumpkin' answers.

Hey Russ is it the same a machina, his setup? his sound seems a little more top heavy (i could be wrong) just wondering if its kit or technique thats giving him the sound.

Yeah, the Cobolt Noiseless ones fender developed. They added them into a bunch of ones like Eric Clapton's artist series stratocasters. But the Lace Sensors are being produced again.

And an Eventide I think, but it was all really well hidden for the most part. He produced some unbelievable tone though - really was incredible. I was surprised he only used two main cabinets as well, but laughed when I saw close up shots at the V Fest on the big screen of him playing with feedback when he was rubbing his guitar against them. You could see all the scratches and torn vinyl at the top - certainly seen a few miles those things have!
