Well, I've possibly just had the gretest 2 consecutive nights of my life. Let me explain.
Friday : Bens Rock Across Australia :
Boy had I been waiting for this one. Let me just get this out of the way. This is the greatest concert I have ever been to. Period. Just a tad under 3 hours, Kweller, Folds and Lee each giving their all. In the lovely Burswood theatre all could be seen and heard. Crowd interaction was superb. Kweller was as amazing, cool and funny as I had dreamed (BK Baby!). I'm not usually a big fan of Lee and Folds, but tonight I was won over. I had a smile on my face the WHOLE night. This was more a show than a concert. Highlights :
- A girl yelled out "Rock this Bitch!". They then proceeded to, for about 15 minutes, each person playing a few instruments. Best improtu jam that will ever occur.
- Folds/Kweller performing the Kweller classic Falling.
- The 3 Bens song that involved Kraftwerk-inspired robot movements.
- Folds performing Song for The Dumped in the minor key, complete with Japanese last verse and missing bridge.
- All the laughs (these guys should do a comedy show)
- Set closer "Just Pretend"
- Lee/Folds performing "I Touch Myself" in dedication to Kweller.
I have never had so much fun...
Saturday : Silverchair :
On a cold and stormy night I headed off to the picturesque Belvoir Ampitheatre. With the rain lightly falling, and 100's of annoying teeny-boppers screaming whenever a roadie walked on stage, it had the makings of a disppointing night, especially when I don't like the Chairs first 2 albums. Not to be. After all These Years kicked things off and it didn't look back from there. A HUGE sound, a slightly loopy singer, a drummer in his undies who wouldn't stop chewing his toungue (what drugs was he on?), and 2 keyboards made for a great night. Even a lack on encore could not possibly dampen it. Highlights :
- Now this is the big one : Emotion Sickness into Without You . I am convinced, that the version of Emotion Sickness they played is the greatest single piece of music I will ever hear in my life ( and I know I've still got to see Radiohead, Coldplay, Zwan and Muse). This was what I dream Silverchair could sound like all the time. Think Pink Floyd meets Pumpkins meets Sigur Ros - a HUUUUUUGE opening, followed by lenghty periods of INCREDIBLE instrumentalisms and then returns to the brutal guitar sound. Musically, this band are at the top of their game, and I feel very secure that what I heard was the best that could be done with music. When they followed it up with Without You, a personal fave, the heavens well and truly opened. I closed my eyes and lifted my face to the rain. Right at that moment I imagined that it would not have been too disimilar to hearing the Pumpkins in full flight launch from Porcelina into Rocket. Aboslutely magical....
- The Rain. Made my night. Also made the sweet smell of the forrest come out. It also made the mosh-friendly second half of the gig (which I didn't expect to enjoy but did thoroughly) that much better.
- The Lightning. Walking across the field soaked to the bone (and with just a bit of mud on me) as the skies lit up just summed up how memorable this night was.
What an incredible weekend... I should proably do some study.
