Trev, they are all beautiful guitars. 1st one sounds nice. Fades a little on the higher notes - not much bottom end. But the sound definitley resonates a lot more than the other two when you play down low. 2nd one is a little less bright, but does have more bass. Very nice - also resonates as much as the first one. 3rd one is no where near as 'bright' as the other two, and sounds a little 'muddy' infact. Sounds like a cedar top, whereas the other two would be more like spruce i'm guessing (although aren't maton all QLD maple or something?). It has to be between the first two. I like the second one the most. Just enough brightness with a little more warmth than the first. Don't like the last one much....Could be the fact that you are playing through pickups, rather than hearing the 'true 'sound of the guitar. PS Great playing as well!! PPS Love the fact you are going for a Maton - although if you don't find one you like, you could always get a Taylor like Billy!

I like the first one the most, nice rounded full sound.

well if you haven't listened to them yet please don't read this post, it gives the details away! 1st - Tommy Emmanuel 2, 3 years old, ex demo (and played by the man himself i might add) on offer to me for $1600 no case. newish sounding elixer standard strings, AP5 pickup set to flat eq and max volume. 2nd - Carlisle limeted edition (only 50 made), similar to an "australian" out of their standard models. 3 years old, older custom light strings, not sure what brand, not elixer. AP5 using sme settings. She paid $1600-ish for it new, with a case, running out old stock at allans (crazy, for limited editiion!) 3rd - ECW80C - guitar i bought from ebay at the start of the year. old custom light d'addario cheap strings, 13 years old, slightly damaged. older style ATC pickup. i paid $900 with case. paid $75 for maton setup and service, fixed a broken strut or two inside the body. Basically i think the TE2, retailing at over $3000 sounds like shit in comparison to the other 2, and was hoping for some external unbiased opinions. to me there is not much difference between the carlisle and the CW80, i prefer the carlisle i think, but i may just need to get my CW80 serviced better (i wasn't impressed with maton's job acutally). but i was also worried it might just be the string difference, old cheap Vs new elixer. i hate the sound of the TE2, the twangy steely tinny fake sounding hollowyness, but i'm not sure if it's the guitar, strings, or both. thanks for the opinions.

It might very well just be worth it to put some new Elixr's on the ECW80C to see how it sounds - especially if you do like it more. If it sounds great with new strings (d'addarios are nice for a little while, but then they just deteriorate something shocking), then that might be the pick of them - especially if you like the feel more. Carlisle may still give a fuller sound though because I don't think it's a cutaway, whereas the ECW80C is......but I love the way cutaways look, so....all the best!

Yeah, even gut string d'addarios deteriorate quickly. But I still like the feel of them on my classical guitar.
Gotta have the cuttaway man, have the access to the upper octave.
