Well with more people joining and showing their love for Ryan Adams ... and its not just Steve and I anymore. I thought it was time for a thread to discuss everything Ryan Adams (or St Ryan as I call him). I've uploaded some of his new tracks from 'Easy Tiger' here: idisk.mac.com/simonmateljan-Public?view=webI promised Josh (Toolgasm) some songs to get him into Ryan Adams about a year ago, I'll be putting some of my favs up there too.

I'm very much looking forward to Easy Tiger - I feel it could be his most diverse single album since Gold was released (although with the 3 albums in 2005, it wouldn't be a shock to hear such range)
Halloween Head is very different. I really like it upon first listen, but must admit i laughed when Ryan calls for the guitar solo! This is out next Saturday i believe?
I have not called him St Ryan, but i must say i do refer to him as 'The Great Man' to my family and friends - Share the Ryan love guys!

haha well done sunky, this thread is going to be great, i can feel it beneath my ryan-dominated thought processes i was over the moon when i first listened to two, its the kind of track i know ill be in love with after a few listens ive only heard halloween head once but im very impressed, sounds like a great tune the GUITAR SOLO part makes you smile must listen to the other songs v. soon. cant wait to get my hands on the album which tracks do people like from cold roses? im guilty of liking them all, but if i had to choose 3.. or 5, haha, they would be... - magnolia mountain "steady my soul and easy my worry" <--words to live by! - sweet illusions "cause its almost over and its almost gone" "i aint got nothing but love for you now" "we were nothing we were only the past". <-- so sad and yet somehow uplifting at the same time.. - how do you keep love alive <--i cant even bring myself to talk about this song.. haunting! - blossom "what will your soul return to?" <--incredible - easy plateau "some place to rest my head" <--classic ryan or st. ryan hehe

Halloween Heasdd is pretty funny, the guitar solo bit especially, the whole thing kinda makes me laugh though, its pretty tongue in cheek. Two and Everybody Knows are both amazing.
From Clod Roses... favs are prob: Magnolia Mountain Sweet Illusion Cherry Lane How Do You Keep Love Alive Dance All Night
That was incredibly difficult, its such a consistantly amazing album. Whats everyones favourite album btw? For me its tough between Heartbreaker and Cold Roses. Gold has a heap of my favourite songs on it but its way too long

Cold Roses was easily my top album of 2005 so i would go with that as fave album, it just means so much to me.
I think 29 gets a bad wrap, i really really enjoy it. I get the feeling it was neglected by a lot of casual fans. Their loss.
And Rock N Roll also, a lot of peole see it as a failure, but it's great. He had the balls to do something different. So Alive is just that.
But to answer your question, i'll always go back to Cold Roses i think.

I love Rock 'n' Roll, its the album that got me into Ryan Adams, So Alive was the 1st song of his that I heard. I think the fact that he's said he doesnt like it very much doesnt help its cause in the eyes of some people. 29 has some great songs, but it feels a bit weak in parts to me when you put it next to his other stuff, especially backing up after Cold Roses and Jacksonville.

Yeah it gets a rough run being released after Cold Roses and Jacksonville - That's why i think it goes a little unnoticed and underappreciated. It's not as good as those two, but still 29, Nightbirds, Blue Sky Blues, The Sadness....wow!

Of the stuff on there I'd say: Answering Bell, Magnolia Mountain, How Do You Keep Love Alive, New York New York & Night Birds are pretty good starting points. ] They arent on there but personally Id start with So Alive , This Is It, Stars Go Blue, Bartering Lines.. its all good though.

Haha cheers Simon! I'll start checking it all out soon. Which songs would you recommend a Ryan n00b start with? No worries man, I've put up a 'Ryan Adams Collection' folder here: idisk.mac.com/simonmateljan-Public?view=web(btw - could nobody post that link anywhere else, cheers) Its a bunch of stuff from both Ryan's solo work and his Whiskeytown days. I included some of my favorite song and also the track Don't Be Sad, which features James Iha on guitar. Its a great Whiskeytown track. Few tracks I would suggest listening to first: Call Me on Your Way Back Home (Heartbreaker) Don't Be Sad (Whiskeytown - Pnuemonia) How Do You Keep Love Alive (Cold Roses) Dear Chicago (Demolition) Magnolia Mountain (Cold Roses) Night Birds (29) My Winding Wheel (Heartbreaker) She's Lost Total Control (Rock N Roll) As for my favourite album, Heartbreaker all the way. Steve I agree 29 gets a bad wrap, I think it was because it was the last album in the Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights and then 29. But the thing that makes 29 so amazing is how it is from the thoughts somebody would go through with commiting suicide. How it starts so manic and crazy with 29 before heading into this whirlwind of ups and downs. I got into Ryan by pure accident really. I saw the clip for New York, New York I thought it was alright and I felt like I wanted to find a new artist. Bree and I went to the record shop and yeah I took a chance and got Rock N Roll and Gold. Never looked back.

I'm really liking it, a great run of songs. - Has anyone else had te chance to listen to it? Thoughts?
All very exciting, i wonder is he will launch into a large scale tour?
Ryans show in 2005 were largly seen as underwhelming by the commercial music community i believe. Big deal. Hope he returns sometime soon.

I’ve only given it a few listens and I like it. Its pretty cool, I think it would be the most accessible album since Gold if you know what I mean? Like I could see it being an easy album for people to get into.

Ryan Adams Talks Depression, Drugs And His New Album
In the lead-up to the release of his ninth album, Ryan Adams has discussed his newfound sobriety.
Speaking with the 'New York Times' newspaper, Adams disagreed that the release of his ninth album in eight years reflects any kind of prolificness. The eight studio releases come on top of the myriad tracks he has released under various monikers via his dotcom.
"It's not, like, 'He's over-prolific because he's wasted,' " Adams told the paper. "No, man, you haven't heard anything. You think that's prolific? That's just what trickled through. But that's the whole thing. It's a marketplace. I wish it was more like a museum of wack ideas."
The former Whiskeytown frontman openly discussed his notorious use of drugs and alcohol, admitting that he once snorted 45 speedballs (a mixture of heroin and cocaine) whilst recording two years ago at New York's legendary Electric Lady studios.
He expanded on that period of his life, explaining, "There was intense loneliness, end-of-the-world stuff going on in my mind, bottomless depression. Without exaggerating, it is a miracle I did not die.
"I snorted heroin a lot — with coke. I did speedballs every day for years. And took pills. And then drank. And I don't mean a little bit. I always outdid everybody."
He cleaned himself up with the help of his girlfriend, writer/model Jessica Joffe. After going cold turkey (with the assistance of valium), Adams said he has been sober for over a year.
His forthcoming album 'Easy Tiger', recorded with The Cardinals, features the vocals of Sheryl Crow on lead-single 'Two'. To be released on June 26 in the States, early reports suggest that it is reminiscent of 'Heartbreaker' and 'Gold', Adams' first two solo albums which are generally considered his best.

i read that a few days ago! i hope ryan's happy, it would be really sad to see him continue using.. he has so much to offer musically.. the following frusciante lyric always makes me think of drug use for some reason: 'dont you want sunshine instead of phony lights?'

I've emailed Frontier Touring asking why there is no Perth show. I know it won't do anything, because the tour is pretty fast, there isn't much time for an extra show.
You guys all make sure you enjoy the shows for me.

I know he likes to play different venues, some bootlegs I have are from old theaters and all seated venues. His live shows aren't your huge rock out type gigs, so I think a quiet venue would suit it.
urgh - i really hoped he would come to Perth on this album. I have a mate that is going to be so pissed about this, we'd always talked about seeing St Ryan.
