What songs are you hoping the Pumpkins dust off for the 20th Ann tour?
Will we finally see Geek USA back in the line up? Could we get Towers of Rabble? Will it be the end of the Zeitgeist focused songs? ... could United States be put aside for old epics like Ruby and I Am One?
Also ... this is a theory I have, I've had it for a few weeks, but keep thinking ... will they do this or won't they!?!
Ok here goes, with the sets split over 2 nights for some shows there seems to be the idea that it will be the same setlist from night to night. So its a rumour that all shows titled "Black Sunshine" will have the same setlist, but will they be the same performance?
Could there be a chance that the band play Silverfuck at each of these Black Sunshine shows, but it will be the different versions of Silverfuck from the SP eras? ... ie with the Jackboot ending or the Space Jam ending. Or Disarm as the heavy rock version from Earphoria, to the "album like" full band performance and the Billy solo version ... Follow?
... so am I just wishing for to much on these shows and expecting to much ... like it wouldn't be for every song, but just the songs that have really well known live versions. It would be a HUGE ask for the band to learn these various versions ... but I could see them doing something like this.

"Somewhere....Over The Rainbow"
They could have a lot of fun with BWBW with that theory sunks, i like it
Maybe we can get the thumping version of Bullet from the Adore era, or the upbeat full band stumbliene ( <3 ) ...plus any other live versions rom the 97-99 era to make up for the lack of Adore?.

I'd love to see a few oldies like East or Nothing and everything come out. Maybe some more PI stuff (considering some of those are gish era stuff)
I like the idea of the different versions of the same setlist.

Different versions of the same setlist is a great idea!
however, do we have any concrete info on Billy's intentions going into this anniversary tour? For example, has he said that this is a "What is great about the Pumpkins" as opposed to what 'was' great? Which I think the differing versions of classic songs would do.
I figure with the clear distinction Black Sunshine White Crosses there's always the possibility that it would be a clear cut electric/acoustic distinction.
In regards to what I would like, well, for Black Sunshine I would like all the epics, and I'm with Foxy on this one, let's see some Pisces Iscariot, I want Whir, Blue, Hello Kitty Cat, Soothe - ok ok the list goes on.
I'd love the Black Sunshine night to cover the epics and the White Crosses to cover what my friends and I refer to as "Bedroom Billy" ie; Stumbeline, To Forgive, Whir, Soothe, Winterlong, etc etc.
On a side note, it's funny. If the songs I just mentioned had been written by some obscure acoustic artist they would be forever remembered. It's as if, due to the expanse of the Pumpkins oeuvre, the recognition of these songs still has to wait for it's day of acclaim.
Just a thought.

You're right he hasn't really said what they have planned, Im glad he is keeping that a secret. I want to have something to look forward to I guess.
I don't see it being a "clear cut" electric / acoustic thing from Black Sunshine / White Crosses. Basically because some people will be only attending one night, they would walk away dissapointed hearing only an acoustic show or something like that. I don't even see it being a mix of "happy" and "sad" songs either ... I think its just named that way because its both "extremes" to the Smashing Pumpkins music.
I do wonder how they will split the singles up, Billy has said that no song would be played both nights ... I guess thats the only thing we know about it so far. So how would they split the hits - would BWBW and Today feature in the same setlist?
Im glad you guys understood what I meant about the various versions, and you're right Steve would be easy to do with BWBW for sure. On a side note I kind of miss the days when Billy would just scream "The World Is a Vampire!" ... like I enjoy the current version, but it was pretty much the same as the Machina era. Time for a change?
Im with you guys too with some PI.
Songs I'd love to see come back: - Here is No Why - Geek USA - La Dolly Vita - Plume - Vanilla - The Sacred And Profane - Thru the Eyes of Ruby

yeah it's interesting, one would assume that those going to these anniversary shows would not be 'passing fans' - so I think that the band has alot more room to move in regards to their setlists, they don't have to cater to a crowd they aren't sure of, if that makes sense.
I get the impression that these will be defining shows for the band, with the doco coming out and their intentions laid out on the table, following Billy's comments on American Gothic where (I'm paraphrasing here folks!) he felt like the recording was the closest yet to where the band should be. I think with all this movement we will see a declarative statement from the band with these shows.
In regards to how they would deal with BWBW and Today, for example, I'd imagine the songs chosen for these shows would be more cohesive in terms of their running after one another, which was something they are afforded to do in shows like these, I think at festival gigs their sets sometimes feel jarring because songs that 'need' to be played aren't cohesive with the set as a whole....sometimes.

Thats a great idea simon, would be very interesting to hear how the songs have developed at different points. Though sometimes i just wanna hear the regular versions, the jungle drums BWBW is cool but i like the original, same with the Ava Adore we heard on the aussie tour - awesome song, but i prefer the original version. But i love that the band play around with their songs, does make things much more interesting.
So here is the set list that i submitted for the Poster contest, you had to make a 20 song set list. I didnt try and find really rare stuff that needed to come out of the vault etc, i listened through a whole heap of SP stuff and chose songs i enjoy, havent heard for a while and essentially tried to give some flow to the set list.
01. Lucky 13 02. Tristessa 03. Soma 04. Cherry 05. The Beginning Is The End Is The Beginning 06. I Of The Mourning 07. Starla 08. Pug 09. The Aeroplane Flies High (Turns Left, Looks Right) 10. The Everlasting Gaze 11. X.Y.U. 12. Siva 13. Again, Again, Again (The Crux) 14. Vanity (acoustic) 15. By Starlight 16. Stand Inside Your Love 17. Soot & Stars 18. Galapogos 19. Where Boys Fear To Tread 20. Superchrist

wasn't sure which thread to put this in so i'm just gonna stick it here: www.fasterlouder.com.au/news/international/15378/Billy-Corgan-is-not-Bon-Jovi.htmBilly Corgan is not Bon Jovi International News by JackT, 20th October, 2008 'Reiterating the sentiments we saw in action at V Festival 2008, Smashing Pumpkins custodian Billy Corgan has put his foot down on fans who only want to hear the hits. Speaking with Rolling Stone ahead of the band’s forthcoming US circuit, Corgan insisted he’s sick of being treated like a jukebox. “We found that America had turned every older band into the ‘reunion band’,” he said. “[They would say], ‘I just want to hear those eight songs and drink my beer.’ You think, ‘I’m 41 years old, and I’ve earned some level of trust’. And you find out you’re just like everybody else. You’re no better than Bon Jovi.” The absence of James Iha and D’arcy Wretzky from the Smashing Pumpkins line-up has also rubbed some long-time fans the wrong way, but the frontman is forging on regardless. This tour of the States is to celebrate the band’s 20th anniversary, which means there are “40-45” vintage songs to rehearse with the Smashing Pumpkins V.2. However, as Corgan makes abundantly clear, “If we’re not into [particular old songs], we don’t play them.” Expect at least one 15-minute guitar jam, then…'

Got these links from Hipsters United: Some pointful parts: “Forty-five songs spread out over each set. The first night’s set will be darker and heavier, and the second night will be lighter and transcendental.” Corgan said they’ll be playing the new single [”G.L.O.W.”] a lot on this upcoming run, because when they played the track on their last tour, “People tore their hair out.” newsroom.mtv.com/2008/10/20/smashing-pumpkins-enjoying-their-independence-prep-for-20th-anniversary-tour/Another quote: “We really treated it as a special one-time event, so we have horns, a violin player and we’re playing a lot of songs we wouldn’t normally play,” [Billy] Corgan says. … “The two-night format of playing two totally different sets is really challenging because what the hell are you gonna close Night Two with if all the best stuff is in night one?” he says. “We’re really excited about playing the song ‘Sunkissed’ off our EP, ‘American Gothic’ — it’s about a six-minute long song. It’s very gentle and we’re playing with the horns and everything. It sounds great, but it’s the type of thing that’ll totally kill the crowd and everybody starts throwing [shit].” www.spinner.com/2008/10/20/smashing-pumpkins-look-forward-with-concept-album/

Not sure if this has been mentioned before: www.spinner.com/2008/03/19/smashing-pumpkins-entering-the-studio-to-plot-their-next-move/"But the direction we're going in is grander, as opposed to the stripped-down sound we just did,[American Gothic]" Chamberlin continues. "I want it to be full tilt. I'd like to go bigger. And I think the next time the Pumpkins tour, you'll see a big stage presence with eight to ten people as opposed to just five." ***** So yeah, this has obviously been planned for sometime! So, now in light of this new information: The heavy first night and the lighter transcendental on the second, what do we think the setlists will look like?

yeah looks like you were right there mr! ... I honestly didn't think they were going to do something like this ... but now Im excited. I feel for the people only going to one show ... but hey ... it was billed as a 2 night experience!
Im going to think about songs for each night ... later tonight. Should we play a guessing game? 20 song limit for each setlist?
c'mon lets go!
