New people, new energy ... could it be the important thing Billy was talking about.
From the songs I've seen, I'm impressed ... yes it is odd to think as this as "The Smashing Pumpkins" ... but at least they are on stage having fun. Thats all I want.

this stuff shows great energy, yeah.
tristessa sounds great, agree.
the harmony solo in ava adore was hilarious, and the improv solo is the most pumpkins thing i've heard out of billy in a long fucking time.
byrne is still a bloody cymbal basher, but i don't mind him as much on the classic stuff for some reason. this is his first time playing real pumpkins songs live, right?
i think i might almost go as far as to say that i would go and see this lineup live. if jeff was absent, probably not.
vocally billy is in tip top shape IMHO! dynamics and consonants make a triumphant return.

Listening to a few of the videos of Soot and Stars, there are parts that remind me of another SP/Billy/Zwan song and I just can't place it at this early moment ... but man I'm impressed he pulled this one out. I've also updated the setlist to the official one now, hopefully somebody has recorded it ... Monte was there, so no doubt he may have. and some photo's! www.flickr.com/photos/12298249@N02/sets/72157623761000815/show/with/4532635335/

These are sounding really good (obviously not always the audio quality) but I am really liking the feeling coming from BC and the band.

Monte did video from like the front row, and all you can hear is BC's guitar. Horrible audio, I didn't even bother posting his videos here, everyone elses I put up.

Ahh ok.
What a typo here: "...rhythm section anchored by 19-year-old drummer Mike Byrne. Guitarist James Schroeder rounded out the lineup, with producer Kerry Brown providing the occasional conga rhythm."
Urmm ... James?!
Anyway review from Spinner.com.
The line that snaked down the sidewalk of Cahuenga Boulevard in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon contained a surprising variety of Smashing Pumpkins T-shirts, from the early '90s Gish era to 2007's Zeitgeist.
The occasion was Record Store Day, and the band was treating the first 250 fans that pre-ordered their new EP Teargarden in Kaleidyscope, Volume 1: Songs for a Sailor to an intimate afternoon set at Space 15 Twenty, an open-air courtyard framed by an Urban Outfitters, an art gallery, and a gourmet burger joint.
The courtyard was laid out like a tiny festival, with chilled beer in ice-filled tubs and the smell of grilling meat -- a picnic-casual event where head Pumpkin Billy Corgan roamed the fringes in dark collared shirt, black pants, white Nikes with a red swoosh, and a gray cap askew atop his bald pate.
After a three-song opening set from local singer-songwriter Carina Round, Corgan took the stage, solo at first, playing acoustic versions of the new "A Stitch in Time," followed by "Stumbleine" -- from the 1995 epic double-album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness -- the latter tune sending a middle-aged woman up front into an audible swoon of nostalgia.
With that, the rest of the current iteration of Smashing Pumpkins took the stage. Bassist Ginger Pooley recently left the band to be with her newborn son, so guesting in her spot was former Electric Prune Mark Tulin, who, at 62 years of age, was an odd sight in a rhythm section anchored by 19-year-old drummer Mike Byrne. Guitarist James Schroeder rounded out the lineup, with producer Kerry Brown providing the occasional conga rhythm.
Some minor sound problems were solved in time for a lively stab at "Tristessa," which Corgan referred to as, "An oldie, but an oldie." Teen drummer Byrne handled the epic, rumbling rhythms, endearing him immediately to the crowd, who continued to shout his name as he executed each complicated fill.
If any fans had forgotten about the giant festival occurring 115 miles east, they were reminded by one fellow who bellowed, "Fuck Coachella!" after the last lingering feedback of "Soot and Stars" faded away. This prompted a snickering Corgan to respond, "Gorillaz are bigger than the Smashing Pumpkins. That's what I hear. Thom Yorke solo? Bigger than the Pumpkins." The throng booed supportively.
In a musical era replete with reunions, this one's an odd bird, and not just because Corgan's the only holdover from the original lineup. He's developed an obvious rapport with Byrne, despite their difference in age. And fans sang along even to the brand new "Widow Wake My Mind."
But the band's website has posts looking for a new bass player and keyboardist. So this incomplete band is neither reunion nor rebirth, but a kind of work in progress.
Still, no one here seemed to care, as they sat packed tightly in this unique space with wide grins and held-high fists.
After the set, Corgan chatted with SPIN. "I thought it went really well," he said, lingering backstage. "It's a first show, whether you want it to be or not. There are things you can't account for, like not being in game shape, but I thought it was fun and I'm really happy."
He explained the genesis of the current band: "It's hard when you're an alternative band and you're in that cross between indie-world and the mainstream world, so I floated there for a while, and I finally just decided I'm not going to try to deal with either world and try to create my own world. I think people are really responding to that."

I'm so excited to come home and listen to this tommorrow! too tired to listen now
That's the type of setlist they should have played the whole time, and it would have stopped half the drama.

Nah, people would have still bitched. Break down the setlist:
"Classic" Smashing Pumpkins: Ava Adore Bullet with Butterfly Wings Stand Inside Your Love Today Soot and Stars Tristessa Stumbleine
"New/Recent" Smashing Pumpkins A Stitch in Time A Song for a Son Astral Planes G.L.O.W. Widow Wake My Mind That's the Way (My Love Is) (new song: "Baby")
It was a 50/50 split. The "classic" Smashing Pumpkins songs played were still the ones played during the 20th Ann. Tour that had all the drama. The drama would have still been there because people didn't get the songs they wanted. No Cherub, No Rocket, No 33 etc ...
If Billy took this setlist on tour and play for "paying" fans people would have bitched because HALF the setlist was filled with new/recent songs. This was a free show to hardcore fans, it was playing to the converted and the people that love the band.
Finally.
Jimmy would have still left, I still think it was the whole TBK / 44 Song / 11EP's thing that turned him off.

They played Soot and Stars and Tristessa on the 20th Anniversary Tour? Those two songs at least show a willingness to play old material - on the 20th Anniversary tour that didn't seem to be the case.

No Tristessa and Soot & Stars weren't played, I meant to say majority. My bad.
But songs like Medellia of the Gray Skies, Bodies, Soma, The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning, We Only Come Out at Night, Siva ... plus a bunch more were dusted off just for the 20th Ann Tour.
The thing is, they could have played Tristessa instead of Siva, people would have bitched. I know the 20th Ann. Tour was also played with a nearish 50/50 split of new vs old songs, so it was no different to what they played on Saturday in a way. Just a smaller scale.

Oh totally, he looks happy, calm, relaxed and it really feels like a 'band' on stage.
So to put the question out there ... was 'Jimmmy the cause of all the negativity in the band?' ... him leaving the band is really the only big change that has happened (oh and Billy 'dating' Jessica).
Anyway, I'm in no way saying it is ... just suggesting it is a possibility. I just hope the free happy vibe continues when they start playing for paying fans that "expect more" than just a free concert crowd. Next stop is Japan, we should have at least TBK EP 2 by them (or near then) ... so we'll see some more new songs and perhaps a few new old ones.
Watching the clip for Ava Adore last night with Bree we both noticed that Mike looks wrecked by the end of it. He'll need to work on his stamina I think, especially if one day soon Billy wants to drop a 10-15 min epic jam into the set.

This looks good, its early days yet though; hopefully they'll survive a tour.
