Coments/ Review from netphoria: Wow, what an eventful show. First off, let me say that I'm a huge fan of the band, I know their catalog well, and I'm not one of those fans that hates on the soft, electronic, or experimental tracks. That being said, the last 30 minutes of this show was VERY experimental. Heavy metal machine was performed in a barely recognizable arrangement, and if it wasn't for the lyrics I wouldn't have recognized it at all. Set the controls for the heart of the sun was a good 20 minutes long, which was about 15 minutes too long in my opinion. The song just lacks substance, doesn't have a good rhythm, and Billy spent the last 15 min basically just mashing his guitar any way he could. I realize that some people are into noise rock, but I am not one of them. I like rhythmic guitar playing, and solos that mean something besides noise. I felt like I was at a shitty Sonic Youth tribute show. Now, I know people will get on my ass about how Billy's tastes are evolving, yada yada yada, but if I wanted to hear noise rock I could perform it in my own apartment and save the $90 I payed to hear my talented idol perform.
The crowd seemed to agree with me, and when the song finally ended, some boos were heard from house left, and a LOT from the balcony. Billy reacted to the boos by giving the 'stand up' gesture to the orchestra (both palms facing up, moving up and down). The boos were drowned out by cheers in about 3 seconds, but the damage had already been done. After the cheers came out Billy abruptly turned heel while laughing to the band, like a "I can't believe their actually booing me" type laugh. He clearly tried to shrug it off, but like most musicians, Billy is sensitive, and couldn't resist taking a few shots at New York before he left.
If he was getting booed after set the controls, I think he knew about how well the all acapella encore would go. During everything is beautiful, he kept interjecting with little tongue in cheek comments. He said "People are leaving...it's ok, we still love you" He kept saying "We love all of you" over and over, to the point of sounding sarcastic. He said "The people are wondering Jimmy, they're wondering about the smashing pumpkins.... why can't you just play the songs they lost their virginity to?" He also said "Those boos are what propelled the New York Yankees to the top of the ladder....Derek Jeter hits a home run, 'booooooooo'"(like the sound of the ball leaving the park). He even said "We'll see you all in HELL! ....Just kidding.....I'm just kidding." I would have actually thought he was kidding, if he didn't hedge it by saying just kidding so many times. You kinda had to be there to perceive the sarcasm, but he said it in a way that didn't sound kidding. He was clearly in a vindictive mood.
Personally, I think Billy displayed a pretty thin skin tonight. If fans aren't receptive to 20 minute experimental solos, suck it up. Billy seems to not even care what his fans think anymore, he's going to keep selling $90 tickets and doing whatever the fuck he wants during shows. I would like to see a more edited set next time, and less fucking around.

In response to that dude, if Billy is "going to keep selling $90 tickets and doing whatever the fuck he wants during shows" then perhaps the people who dont want to see that will stop going and the rest of us can fucking enjoy the show and show our appreciation and respect for a bunch of talented musicians.
I have been to some shit gigs in my time but i have NEVER booed an artist!

haha nice back on topic work, scott. I dont know - I just still cant imagine booing someone that is trying to create something. Sure, think it is crap as all hell, but there is no need to make them feel like crap. And in regards to the band you mention scott, they were a support band correct - could you imagine actually booing NIN at that gig when they were in the middle of their set and played some song that went longer than made you comfortable. I dont know, I pay my money and go and watch what the artist is going to give me that night, it the energy I give back to them that gets the whole flow going...if I think they are shit they will get that without me having to vocalise it.
Again, to get on topic - there is a heckler in one of the other new shows (sorry i cant remember which one off the top of my head, i think its one of the NY sets) and BC gets him up on stage, the guys says last nights gig was shit - on stage, with billy....and when billy says "OK, do you want your money back" the guy says that he was only joking. WTF? Firstly, if it sucked that bad, sell your ticket and dont go to the second night in a row dickwad, and secondly - do you really need to get up on stage to bullshit that you thought it sucked only to then back down when Billy actually wants to deal with it?
ugh, i get that people dont all enjoy what SP are doing - and i dont always wanna hear a 30 minute sonic epic, i get it - but fucking get over it! hahaha.

Sure, think it is crap as all hell, but there is no need to make them feel like crap. and in the case of the datsuns, there's no reason to berate the people who are booing you and the entire rest of the crowd - that's when all 15,000 people turned on them instead of the few thousand who were booing.

Well, this proves how fucking ridiculous the media coverage of the pumpkins is, so far. Granted it seems like a juvenile thing to say, but its a rock and roll concert, and this guy has got up on stage and said something which basically says "I'm a fan of the band, and I expect that my criticism will be heard, and that you'll act accordingly" and that is not what the band is about. It's Billy's stage, the way he wants. You don't fuck Billy in the ass, he fucks you.
I think it's less to do with PC and more to do with the fact that the pumpkins are starting to actually get somewhere with this new lineup. It seems to me that of late there has been so many positive pumpkins moments overshadowed by stuff like this, because for the first time in a long time they seem to be getting positive reactions from old fans and new fans.

Well.......the comments, anyone on a stage or on show is going to cop flak for them, and someone like BC especially will be raked over the coals. I don't mind because it wasn't exactly and attack, more a retort to being provoked and wound up. But this is something that could linger.
It's not pretty, but i've already forgotten about it, not the worst thing you're ever going to see on/hear on a stage.

I didn't think it was offensive - he wasn't being homophobic, he was trying insult the dickhead who came up on stage, bagged out SP and then said - oh sorry i was just joking. I think after BC getting the guy on stage, letting him speak without interuption, and then they guy obviously just wanting to have done it for attention - Billy can say what he wants (obviously within bounds) but the terms he used are used all the time, he wasnt using them in a homophobic way at all. My 2 cents.
