hmm yeah be careful Kez. but from the story my friend told me (guy who got his chest signed) about how they made hardly any money for the last six months just so they could put together the performance etc and were asking for donations, i guess they seem like they'd be pretty honest/not rip you off (you'd hope). my friend is really into theatre/performance too and he took them $100 on the second night and one of the band members actually started crying. if they're going to use the photos for promotional material you really should get paid. i did do a bit on copyright infringement etc while i was at tafe but that was a few years ago. you could try contacting this girl Kylie on flickr because i know she's had a Jason Mraz photo of her used on his current tour posters - www.flickr.com/photos/kyza

Yeah, well I have said that they can use what they want without paying me. I really don't mind. Its not as if I was shooting the gig as a job, I was just there as a fan. They don't make a lot of money, The Danger Ensemble (the theatre troop that were on tour with her) were not getting paid, so they donations were for them...and AP said at the gig that she is always surprised when people ask her for the rights to use her songs etc, she is always like "hell yeah, go for it, you dont need to ask me" etc. Her deal is a very collaborative, DIY, punk sort of ethic, so I would feel like an ass asking for any payment. I doubt things will get used for promo - if they are I have just asked for Credits and to be notified when/if they are used.
Sorry I missed Scotts reply on the end of the page before....you would be aprehensive. Hmm, if it was a big band then I would want payment. One thing I realised is that AP is really quite small. There wouldn't have been more than 200 people at the gig in Adelaide I wouldn't have thought. I dont know, everything with her is more for the sake of art than for making money. She was pissed to find out that some of her tickets cost $50 saying that she doesnt regulate but from now on she will, because she thinks they shouldnt be more than around $30. The bands stays with fans while on tour, because they cant afford hotels etc. Amanda paid for the flights and any accom for the Danger Ensemble but couldn't afford to pay them etc. She isn't going to be making a shit load of money out of any of my photos.
To be honest, even if she did - just to have my credit to it would be an awesome step up. I am just starting out, and while i dont want to get ripped off (which i dont think they would do) I dont want to be looked over because I am wanting payment that they cant afford either.

yeah as long as you're given credit i think that's the main thing, and if they let you know then that's what's most important.

yeah, you're probably right about the size of the band etc. i think i'm starting to get influenced by all the people complaining about people shooting for free tickets etc on flickr haha.

Can i just say how much better The Dwarf is - I just approved to shoot two gigs, one is in April and one in May. With FL i end up getting a few days notice at the most, one was like 4 hours notice - that is one of the reasons i couldnt apply for too many with them. I need to have my time planned a bit earlier than a few days ahead.

haha. you need to be quick Scott! i'm doing Kate Miller Heidke for them in April. i shot Andrew Morris @ The Toff last night, my photos are crap but whatever here they are - www.fasterlouder.com.au/gallery/10139/Andrew-Morris.htmi missed both supports so tried to make up for it with lots of socials one thing i don't like about FL is that you can request gigs ahead of time. i think it's unfair, and how are you supposed to know how early to get in? i mean if you request it early and they give it to you that's great, but what if someone else was waiting for it to show up on the list and it never does? but if that's the way people are gonna play it i guess i have no choice, i felt greedy doing it last week. so i *think* i might be getting to do Chill City and Madness, which would be awesome, but i feel guilty about it.

Scott - it is the Kate Miller Heidke (who knows if i am even spelling her name right, who cares) and Sia. The lists you get from The Dwarf are months ahead, and i have been confirmed already, so I am very happy. I dont know that they ask for social shots either (which will make me even happier as I hate doing that shit)

they don't want socials, and they don't necessarily care about the supports either (i still do the supports anyway). the weird thing is though that since you don't usually get a +1 with the Dwarf i'd go alone, and end up missing doing the socials because it gave me a chance to talk to people.
when i was at the Andrew Morris gig i swear to god, NOBODY wanted their photo taken. i reckon i asked about 15 groups and only 3 said yes. but we were hanging around and they opened up the room afterwards to everyone so there were some drunk people i could ask then. one group i asked if they wanted on and they took like 5 mins to make up their mind, and then they finally said yes and none of them even looked at the camera! one good thing though was that everyone was sitting at little tables so i'd give them the FL card first, and in alot of the shots you can see it which i guess is good advertising =)
i'll take a pic of the new cards to show you guys when i remember. now would be a good time to ask if you're waiting on some.

Had a very lucky coincidence happen the other day. I was at work at a shop I dont normally work at, they had a copy of the newspaper there which I never buy, decided to browse through it on lunch, there was a Sia article which mentioned at the bottom that her gig is on Tuesday March 31 @ The Gov - not on April 11 @ The Grace Emily like The Dwarf had told me. I emailed Lisa at the Dwarf, and yeah, seems everything had changed (or the wrong info was given to start with). Imagine if I hadn't seen it, not only would I have missed the gig, but I would have rocked up to the Grace Emily and looked like dick, ready to shoot a not existent gig! haha. So....off to shoot Sia tomorrow @ The Gov. btw. I was then sent an email confirming names and dates for the KMH gigs, saw Bec's name down to shoot in melbs

that was bloody lucky kerrie!!!!!!!!!
you still keen to shoot Cradle of Filth Kerrie? We're gonna try and expand our galleries and live reviews section to go state specific, and open the website up to contributors outside of melbourne. Annoying i'm not organising passes for CoF, just all other gigs, but should be fine to shoot it if we can get passes for the show, if you want to.

Yeah, sure Scott. Would give me a great chance to shoot at that venue, and shoot a band that I wouldn't normally get the chance to. Im sure their lighting etc will be different to the types of bands I have shot so far. So if its a chance, I will put my hand up.

it's a good idea to get the phone number of the person you contact for FL or The Dwarf, i rang Tom for help when i had the mix up with my Josh Pyke pass.
Scott - i met a guy @ Madness last night who shoots for Beat and does heaps of metal gigs, and i reckon you guys would have probably met before. he was telling me how he wants to shoot Trivium to see the support that's some german metal band who have never toured here, and i was like "ahhh yeah i bet you've met my friend". anyway his name was Ben and i told him about your site. he's in the middle in this pic, do you know him? he was cool

I met him shooting Opeth, so september last year, and he might've gotten a head nod once or twice from me since I'm not the most social photographer going around haha! that, and the gigs i shoot dont always have many photographers. he seemed like a cool guy though. I was keen to shoot the trivium support aswell, and not trivium, but i leave 2 days before the gig gets to melbourne he is also the guy i used to see shoot at no barrier gigs, he has an ability to come just before the main band, get to the front of the stage, shoot and generally stay there. he has a talent

my Chill City pics are up if you guys wanna see (looks like Scott already has). i had so many photos to go through, there were 8 bands! apparently this was one of the last JBT gigs they were doing together..? didn't know that. www.fasterlouder.com.au/gallery/10391/Chill-City.htmoh and i deleted the pic of that guy from the post before, i keep forgetting this is a public forum and always have to go back and delete stuff cos i'm weird and paranoid about stuff.

i had no idea about that being one of the last JBT shows, otherwise i would have made an effort to go even though i should be saving edit: it seems JBT is changing the line up again after these april shows. i really liked your pics though, especially the JBT ones were great, who was the woman who looked like a cross dresser?

lmfao, someone called Betty Harris. she seemed really out of place but people were getting into it. she sang old stuff from the 60's. not my thing but she was great to photograph given her outfit, alot more interesting than Dan Sultan or Paul Kelly.
a girl i was talking to reckons this was the last one with the current JBT lineup, but that has to be wrong, i'd never even heard about it. i would have thought it would be a highly publicized thing if it was.

could be if this was the last april show. its on the JBT website on the main page, down a bit. i originally thought it was the woman from australian idol its hard to shoot when people just stand infront of a mic

i'm shooting Jason Mraz @ Palais tomorrow, i hope it goes well! i've got a ticket so if i'm shooting in the aisle and have to cloak my camera i'm a little worried that i'll try to get to my seat and someone will be in it. apparently people were only allowed to shoot from behind the sound desk @ Cheech & Chong the other night, hope that doesn't happen to me....

i think that was probably cos that was a comedy act, at alice in chains it was from the front, and everyone was standing anyway. if they escort you out of the venue cloak the camera, but after 3 songs i walked abck to my seat and the security didnt move at all from the front, so could take my camera with me to the seat fine. you've been going crazy with all the gigs you're going to this year

i know! before the whole photo pass thing there'd always be smaller gigs i wanted to go to (like at the EBC, Corner Hotel etc) but i'd never make the effort, now i always do. may & june are looking like pretty dry months though, i need to find some stuff to go to.... any recommendations?
i'm hoping i can just go straight to my seat after taking the pic tonight, instead of going out to the cloak room and back.

I am just uploading my KMH set to The Dwarf now, but it is up on my Flickr www.flickr.com/photos/scotopic_lux/sets/72157617887705763/I am really, really happy with this set. Got some amazing shots. The lighting that I was so worried about ended up being the best lighting I have shot under yet! And she is really cute and photogenic so that part was easy. I played around with some compositions when I was shooting this time, I like to try and keep things a little different, a little more "arty" so let me know what worked and what didn't. EDIT> here is one of the shots. Do these B&W shots look a little flat or washed out to you? Looking at them on Flickr just they didn't feel quite right.

Post by de-tec-tive on May 11, 2009 17:26:41 GMT 7
those are sooooo nice, you should be really proud of the album =) i don't think the B&W looks too flat at all, but i get what you mean. once you have too many B&W it can get a little dull, but a few here and there makes them seem more special (in my opinion). i started getting bored of B&W with mine so i've been desaturating them to around 90 or 95%, i think it gives them a bit more warmth =) i really think i need to get a better lens, my 50mm f1.8 is good but very restrictive. but i can't comprehend spending over $1000, maybe even over $2000 for one. anyone know anywhere good to buy...?

Yeah, i was going to do that sort of thing with some of the shots. A really subtle soft colour to them, I really like that look. And that is the great thing about Raw files, you get such great ability to play with your pics. It was so easy fixing the colours, and exporting the files this time. I mean it still took a few hours, but a few is better than 4 or 5! haha
nice Paul Kelly shot, btw Bec!
