I love taking photos at gig, but its always the risk of taking in the camera - if you arent allowed to, and it getting damaged etc. For the SP gigs, im not going to take my Canon 30D im just taking an Olympus c770uz and jessy has an Olympus 720sw so we can hopefully get some ok shots between the 2. who knows, i just want to have fun at the festivals

has anyone in here (or out there) gotten photo passes at gigs? kerrie, what lens do you have with the 30d? i got a 400d the other day, which means my camera is 13.33 times better then yours.. for a much smaller price. if only but i got the 'enthusiasts' kit at jb, which means you get a 17-85 f4-5.6 IS USM lens, which is pretty expensive, but gonna be shit for concert photos so i regret that decision now. might sell it and buy some standard ones to get me going (50mm f1.8 or something).

i just bought a new camera (Nikon D80) which i'll be giving to myself for my bday tomorrow (yay), so i'm planning on applying for photo passes through Faster Louder probably as of next week - what did you want to know?

how do you apply through them?

Post by de-tec-tive on Jul 23, 2008 14:03:43 GMT 7
you have to join the site first, then apply to be a contributor by filling out some stuff and then they approve you. it took a few weeks for me to be approved, it might have helped that i've been a member of the site for 3 years already, but i don't know if that factors into it or not. then every sunday the editor for your city sends out a group email to all contributors saying "i need shooters for these gigs, a reviewer for this gig" etc, and you apply for the one/s you want to do and send them a link to your FL page, and then they choose from there. what happens after that i'm not sure, because i haven't started taking pics for them yet. i'll let you know what happens after my first one though =)

maybe ask Todd how long it took for him to be approved too, because i know he's written at least one review. you could also contact Beat, Inpress etc directly and ask if they need anyone, but i reckon it'd be pretty hard to get in with them.

yeah i signed up with faster louder months ago but havent even responded to any calls for photos, I think i just have a little too much going on with Work and TAFE at the moment, but i would love to start doing some work. Scott, I cant remember what my lenses are atm, the camera is still at my mums house. I actually got a really good deal from TEDS when i bought it and i pretty much got my big lens for free when it was worth about $500. I got my 30D body and two lenses for $2000 approx. Will give you all the details when i pick it up again from mums (i've always been bad at remembering specs! haha)

yeah i'm the same, i really want to do stuff for them but haven't applied for any passes yet because nothing has really appealed to me. but i figured if there's any band touring that i like i'll already have tix to the gig anyway, so i might as well just apply for some even if i don't know the band so i can get some experience. i got my camera from Ted's too and got a pretty good deal. it was meant to come with a free tripod but we've already got about 5 so i traded it for a camera bag and some other accessories.

my first effort - www.fasterlouder.com.au/gallery/7394/Jarvis-Jay-The-Refunds.htm - pretty crap but whatever. 67 Special cancelled due to illness, how annoying. when i got the email i had a bit of a freak out though because they said to make sure i get some 'social snaps', and that's not really my thing, but some drunk people were nice enough to pose for some pics. it was so dark in there though it made it almost impossible to focus, i just had to hope for the best (which didn't work out too well). i want to try for the Mess Hall this sat i think...

Didn’t you like the pics? I thought they were great when i had a random look on FL and it turned out to be yours I haven’t been lucky yet with FL, but i shot caliban at the corner for a metal website I’m with: metalobsession.net/gallery?album=8&gallery=26 and just got another photo pass for carcass at billboards. It’s cool getting these passes, especially caliban who had a proper pass, but i would like to get the odd non metal one which i cant do through a metal website

those are really good! is it just FL and the metal site you're applying through? did you get a +1 with those ones? i didn't get a +1 for 67 Spec, but i was talking to the guy who was doing the review for FL and it was about the 5th one he's done, he said he's gotten a +1 for everything else so far except that, i guess because Revolver is so small.

wasnt sure if i could bring a +1 for Caliban, didnt think to ask for carcass @ billboard there is no +1 as its about to sell out. but i would love some +1s as for FL, couldnt tell you, as you have an infinite amount of experience more then me with FL i want the dude from FL who was at caliban to upload his frikken pics so i can upload mine here so i ahve something to show when i reuest passes through FL.

its definately worth doing. try and get a cheap 'nifty 50' if you dont have one. i have some 900 dollar lense.. but its incredibly shite for night time shots.. so in other words was a waste of money for me (17-85 f4-5.6) so i got for 130 bucks a 50mm f1.8 lens and its freaking awesome.
goodluck if you apply kerrie!

nice one I've been emailing around bigger tours, but people who dont want you just seem to ignore you rather then reply and say 'no. but should also be shooting down and underoath, and am getting into shihad, but they cant 100% confirm a photo pass till closer to the date.

nice pics bec even the 'punters' ones came out good anyone ahve any experience renting lenses? promoter is 'confident' i'll be shooting disturbed at festival hall this saturday, which means i need a bigger lense.

pfft, the punter ones are shit, but thanks anyway =) sorry i don't know anything about renting lenses, maybe try some smaller business camera shops or privately owned places? i have no idea...
this guy i sort of know works in the camera section at chemist and they're closing down, and he said he can get me camera equipment for cost price. he hasn't gotten back to my yet for the price on a bigger lens for my camera, but it's tempting. i don't know much about lenses in general though, so it might be a dumb move to buy one without doing more research/knowing what i might need in the future.

ask if he has a 70-200 f2.8 IS lens for a canon haha. so renting is about 99 bucks for a weekend. more then i wanna pay, but not bad if i have to. friend at rmit is gonna try and borrow shit for me though as its free for students

woah that's expensive! i'll message the guy now =) so why do you need a new lens, just for more zoom? i seriously know nothing about lenses, i never really learnt about it at tafe or anything. where did you (and Kerrie) learn about photography and stuff?

thanks will probably be out of my range though the course i was doing had a semester on photography.. which has turned out to be really helpful i got a 17-85mm f4-5.6 lens with the camera.. so a little more then 1:1 at zoom end, and really wide angle which is cool for small venue bands, but sucks cos its a slow lens so get alot of blury pics then got a cheap 50mm lens, i think 1:1, and f1.8, so pretty damn fast and really cheap, and its rpetty much all i use. But i cant shoot drummers So the 70-200 will be alot more zoom, which i reckon i'll need at festival hall. But am looking around 1600 to 2500 depending on image stabilisation new but sigma have their version for 999. but yeah, still too much Also, the size given is for full frame cameras, like old school 35mm ones. The ones we have, maybe kerrie aswell, will have a 1.6x magnification on the chip i think it is, so they are zoomed in already compared to the really expensive dslrs. i wanna be a photographer of gigs for money haha. let me quit my current job
