haha, no worries its hard to find time. i dont check for a week or so then see a picture in the recent uploads then catch up on someones photostream and i agree about the dwarf. i agve up on them long ago though and yep, sophie gave them to me. As for the flash, laurence put it on, set it up, and took it off when metric came on cos i had no idea what i was doing it looks bloody confusing! and they arent cheap which sucks, as pretty much they'll just be used for socials. hopefully i get into the course next year and can justify the extra money i wanna spend on cameras! and manson is only 1 song on saturday gay. he's gotten quite fat (well, in sweden he was) so maybe he's getting self concious but atleast i organised to get myself a +1 ticket for the reviewer (my bro)

yeah that's why i haven't really bothered buying a flash, i'd only use it for socials and i don't do heaps of them so i'll just stick with what i've got for now.
lmao @ Manson getting fat, he always looked pretty foul to me. one song is really shit!

I have been thinking about getting a flash too. was looking at them online. This may sound dumb but so many photographers i see in the pit have a flash attached and i know you can never use them at gigs, so i was trying to find out if perhaps they help with light metering? If they have a sensor or something that lets them get a better read on the light. Why else would you not take off your massive flash? haha.
It sucks because i kinda have enough money saved up to get the lens I want, well way more than enough. But we settle on our house next friday and we need an alarm system and some new fencing etc, and i feel really guilty spending money on a lens. But I think i will justify it as an early 30th bday pressie.

i'm not sure about improving the metering or anything, as i dont really see how it'd be possible, but without it, i agree, why have it attached when shooting a band?! they can really piss you off when they arent being used but are big enough to get in your shots! grr! as for an ealry 30th present, that sounds good what lens have you settled on?

i've wondered the same, why do people bother keeping it attached? i'm guessing you guys saw the festival email from the Dwarf, i wasn't going to even bother applying but i asked for any one of Falls, Pyramid, Queenscliff and Peats Ridge festivals, and i fucking got Pyramid!!!! i politely asked if there'd be a +1 and Lisa said she's not sure, i'm kind of worried no way do i want to do it if Trev can't come

I have that Sigma lens and it's great. Much heavier than my 50mm prime lens but it has been on my camera 90% of the time and usually switch to the 50mm when my hand is starting to hurt Here's my gallery from Perth metal band, Voyager (taken with the above lens); www.metalobsession.net/gallery?album=8&gallery=95

i stil dont know if i made the right choice going for the 18-50 instead of the 24-70. i figure i'll probably never get a full frame camera. and until i can get a fish eye, i like the barel distortion in the 18-50 on the other hand, no closer than 50 mm sucks, and you're better off just using the 50mm prime i was tempted the other day to go to nikon as everyone says the d300 is the best camera for gig photography... but i think once i buy the 7d ill be happy with it. i need to see if i can get a scartch out of my 18-50 lens stupid crap lazyness in europe i like the set brian it seems like a cool venue

The Amplifier Bar is an awesome, intimate venue. Was a great place to take my first gig shots as you could practically get on the stage earlier in the night.
Think I'll only be asking for local Perth gigs to shoot in the future. I'd rather showcase talent from WA than shooting artists who have been photographed a bajillion times in venues around the world.
I've got a speedlite 430 EX II flash for portrait photography but wouldn't use it for gigs; ruins the mood and blinds the already light inundated band members. I think the IR on the flash can be used to get a quicker auto focus lock in low light which is why some photographers have it attached but don't let it fire. Not sure on that but it'd be worth a shot.

what you said sounds right about the focus. big bands are always fun to shoot, big stage, nice pit, good lighting, massive crowd behind you. is good fun

A band I was in for a while in its infancy are about to release their debut EP called The Hallowed Design. They needed a photographer very quickly to get a photo for the distributor to use so they asked me to give it a go. I splurged and bought a 580 EX II to use on the day which was great but didn't get to work out much with it at the time as it was rush rush rush. Here's the shot they sent to the distributor but I'll post more as they give the go-ahead to post them. www.mediafire.com/file/nnmnvjyixe2/Lacrymae Group Shots(Med) (3 of 6).jpg[/img]

we've let this thread die this week i shot Tumbleweed and Skunkhour, both at the Hi Fi. lights were pretty shit, i think i'm going to start avoiding that venue. exciting news though, i was chasing up my Pyramid pass with the Dwarf and got asked if i knew someone who would want to review it (i'm assuming the other person bailed) so i said Trev would do it and they said yes! kind of bad that they didn't even want to know if he's a contributor or has done reviews before (no x2), but it's awesome for us!

thats mad, so previously trev wouldnt have been able to come? i agree 10000000000000% about the hifi. it would be mad being cam or nadia and shooting for the venue, but god damn i hate the venue. no barrier most of the time, and shithouse lighting. its no fun there. i need more hours in a day considering im only working part time (taking photos of kids on santas lap ), i dont have enough time. an architect contacted me about doing working drawings for his work, so thats been taking up time, and shooting a band in the studio today again, i havent had a chance to get around to the dream theatre photos from monday, or stick up kerries karnivool photos yet

I'll be sending my Vool pics tonight - I had a shit of a weekend after the awesome gig on Friday. We ended up giving our dogs away due to the fact that we don't have enough time to devote to them anymore. I feel like absolute crap!

LMAO @ shooting kids on Santa's lap and yeah Trev bought a ticket but now we have to sell it and looks like we might have to lose a bit of money

well, from what i gather from this thread... minimum requirements: a dslr with high ISO, a fast 50, and a good eye. yesmm?
hmm. noticed you were in the studio with NeO, actually - say hi for me if you end up back in there again! "the other brendan says hello", or whatever... haven't ran into them for a couple months...

yeah sign up for FL! give them a link to your flickr when applying for gigs, just start by applying for some small ones and if you're good it won't take long to move onto bigger things
