Well, i'm not sure how an NBL thread will go here, but the season is upon us so i will at least have a go at creating some excitement for it! I guess the fact that the salary cap has been slashed leaves a bit of uncertainty in the league as to what teams will be fighting for the championship. For the first time in years my beloved Adelaide don't look to be a top 4 side....on and off court issues playing a hand. With two new teams and a totally new finals system on board...who knows what will happen Go Sixers!

I grew up following the NBL when it used to get prime time coverage on a saturday night. I REALLY miss seeing matches these days The whole league is still in a mess. There has been countless franchises who have folded/merged over the last 6/7 years. Anybody remember the devils, rollers, falcons, magic, cannons, supercats, titans? I'm lucky that my Giants still are an entity. It's not good. The league needs a profile in this country. Anyway, I think the sixers might struggle this year. They really need to get Rychart signed up. Hopefully the Giants will be competitive. Cutting D. McDonald was the worst exhibition of sportsmanship I've ever witnessed though. He went through so much with the old giants - titans- new giants he deserved better than that. We won 9 games last year..hopefully we'll get 12+ this year.

I believe the league is on the way up. If all teams can survive (a very important if) and the league is stable for a few years at least (ie - major sponsors) then the popularity should rise once more....if somehow the NBL could be shown on free to air, that would be a HUGE factor in getting armchair fans back into the game. And Dusty will play for the 36ers this season (but not in their first game) - Thank god And i cannot believe D-mac will be wearing Tigers yellow this year.....you guys got Rob Feaster, he should explode this season....he could lead the league in scoring if he gets the green light (which he should )

yeah, Rob will be good...but I only see him as a replacement for Jamhal Mosely..so it's a break even situation really. Our home court situation will be interesting. Gone are the days of playing at places like the tennis centre...now it's a 2k seat suburban stadium

Yeah it was good to see the sixers snare a win. You've been unlucky in a couple of games. My giants are making the most of a pretty nice draw atm. First 4 games at home against 'average' teams. Only 1000 people to the game last week? What the hell? Good to see perth off to a 0-3 start ;D It's a pity there isn't more basketball fans here

It's a pity there isn't more basketball fans here I'm a basketball fan...I used to play from 1996-2001. Good old junior league... I used to go to the Cannons games...But seeing as how they're DEAD now I can't go anymore! They used to shoot these little balls out of a novelty cannon at timeouts and halftime, that was cool! I miss that

yeah..it was a shame about the cannons. They escaped "extinction" so many times..i guess it was eventually going to happen.
But last year was a debarcle the way it happened.

Yes - are there really no basketball fans here? Saintal, what do you think of the Giants uniforms? I saw the brown ones and didn't really like them too much, last years were better. The sixers new ones aren't that great either...oh well, not the biggest issue! Sixers vs Breakers next week, time for revenge

I think overall they look better than last year's singlet, b/c at least we've got a decent logo this year (it's very much like the old NM giants logo). I think that is why our crowds have been so pathetic this year..any of the old magic fans who gave the team a chance last year have fallen off as the club seems to be trying to re-invent the 'good old days' with the brownish singlet (which the club wore til 1994)and the old giants logo, hence (further) alienating any of the old magic fans who stayed on after the demise of the titans. I hope the sixers pound the breakers, coz we play them the next night

Just out of interest, because you guys follow the NBL, do you also keep an eye on what's happening in the NBA? I used to, when they actually showed it on TV. Then I had to resort to Foxtel. Then they scrapped it and I'm left with nothing If you guys do follow it, which teams/players do you like?

Yeah..my interest in the NBA has dwindled too unfortunately. No TV coverage would play a big part in that.
Portland were always my team. I remember watching them when i was really young play Chicago In the NBA finals, and i guess that is how i became a fan (probably, lol, i dont really remember).
These days Portland have a rep of being the "bad boys" of the NBA. Rape, drugs, speeding..you name it. They've definitely underacheived the last 5 years given their talent.
Apparently that new kid LeRon James was terrible in his game., lol. He's already a millionaire before he's even made a basket. Maybe that is why I'm more interested in the local game as well...far too much money in american sport.

Maybe that is why I'm more interested in the local game as well...far too much money in american sport. I agree - America just spends too much money on things in general. I mean seriously, how many millions of dollars does a person need? We can all survive without it, surely they can be satisfied with a similar or slightly more amount. Imagine if all the money that America wastes on things like that, and *cough DEFENCESPENDINGcough* was directed to more useful purposes, then the world would probably be a little bit less fucked up. Anyway, I've had my rant. This thread is about basketball I've always backed the San Antonio Spurs. It dates back to when I was little, and my brother always used to drag me down to the court so he'd have someone to practice his moves on. Anyway, to keep my interest he'd assign me a player, to make me feel cool. And after him and his friend took the good people (I'm guessing Shawn Kemp when he was still with Seattle and Jordan) they gave me David Robinson. So I started out liking them cause that was the team Robinson was on lol. What a wonderful reason But then they came good, got Duncan, and did pretty well. So it all works out in the end ;D Do you guys remember the days when Jordan was still around? And I'm talking Chicago # 23 Jordan, NOT Wizards Jordan. Fuck, he was such a great player. Probably THE greatest of all time. I loved watching him play so much...Absolute magic Whenever I hear his name I think of that shot that he hit to win game 6 and the whole championship in 1997-98...At least I think it was that season... Those Bulls-Jazz games were always so good

Well, my team has always been the Lakers. And it's hard being a Laker fan bacause when they won those titles and Kobe came into his own, suddenly there were a LOT more Laker fans around (Laker fans who would have been Bulls fans when Chicago were winning titles and LA were getting beaten in the seoncd round by Utah and Houston) I guess i started backing the Lakers because a friend of mine and myself, who just loved the game, were sick of looking at the Chicago bandwagon (not just the coverage, but all the fans!) So i became a Laker fan (because i had heard a little bit about this Kobe Bryant guy from high scool) and my friend took Boston. Some great moments from the past few years (that a real fan can appreciate include LA coming back from 15 points down to defeat Portland in game 7 in the 1999-00 season. And also Kobe scoring 56 points in three quaters against Memphis last year Go Sixers! Go Lakers!

You dont forget stuff like that I remember sitting in a computer pool at the start of year 12 during a free lesson and watching the 'yahoo scoresheet' keep updating itself..and our lead fading to nothing. One of the biggest chokes in NBA history....

yeah i remember that, he got 38 against the Jazz in Utah As for the competition in oz, my beloved 36ers put 134 points on the board against New Zealand friday night...Adelaide all of a sudden look like one of the more dangerous teams on offence with Dusty back and Cattalini, Maher and Thomas. what a difference two weeks makes...unbelievable

Well, the NBA season starts today with 3 games. Shane Heal (The most hated NBL player outside of Sydney in his playing days here) made San Antonio's team and will suit up against Phoenix....although i'm from Adelaide i will wish him luck and i'll be watching Also, the Lakers take on Dallas in what will be a HUGE game (Kobe and Shaq are fighing again saintal, i'm not happy ) And Miami play someone or other....Atlanta maybe?

why doesn't the NBA just hand the title to LA now Even though they are old, guys like Payton and Malone still know how to play. (lol..i guess the lakers, plus the spurs, aren't exactly my fav sides after Portland's inability to beat either of them in the playoffs over 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, 1997!!!! ) I'll have to keep an eye on the scores more this year i reckon. We open at Utah by the looks of it. LA up 32-21 ATM.

Yeah the Lakers looked good yesterday, and without Kobe or Fox playing either......Stephon Marbury looked pretty good in patches against the Spurs as well, even though they lost. As for today, 11 games....It's going to be a fun day. If you're wondering why i'm focusing on the NBA and not out national comp.....this may be why..... nbl.com.au/default.asp?s=newsdisplay&aid=394I can't belive it

Oh god this is just odd The 36ers have rarely been in this sort of trouble in the years of me supporting them I'm so used to success, it's still early days, but still! Oh well, the end of an era possibly? And yes, the team that beat the Sixers last was PERTH.....rub it in you West Aussies!

Steve..did you hear about Brett Maher's son? Pretty tragic really Seems like the young guy went through a lot the last few months. Tomorrow's game V Melbourne should be interesting. Let's hope the sixers get up.

Yes, my dad told me about it when i got home tonight. I'm feeling kind of odd. I mean, it's not like i knew the guy but have obviously followed the story since Hudson's condition was exposed. I fell terrible for the guy, it's kind of hollow for me, a lot of people in SA would feel the same way. Really is tragic

Wow, another win, finally!
Oh yeah, and it was against Victoria, Saintal ;D
Dusty was a MONSTER with 36 points and 14 rebounds and Cattalini was solid as usual with 32.
Oh and another highlight was meeting Jacob Holmes in Adelaide at about 3am last night....the next big thing in the NBL.
