“Hyundai Motor America enlisted Smashing Pumpkins lead singer Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin to provide a rock soundtrack befitting the all-new Genesis Coupe in its debut national advertising campaign. The Smashing Pumpkins band members and cellist Yo-Yo Ma will each perform songs to accompany uniquely edited 30-second spots, tailored to their brand of music by editor Hank Corwin. Hyundai selected the Smashing Pumpkins spot to be featured immediately before the kick off of Super Bowl XLIII on Sunday, February 1, 2009. Hyundai has a total of five 30-second spots - three during NBC’s “Kick-Off Show” and two in-game spots during the Super Bowl broadcast. The Yo-Yo Ma version will debut in the coming weeks.”"Smashing Pumpkins scored a new track titled "FOL," to serve as the soundtrack for its version of "The Epic Lap." Yo-Yo Ma's version will feature a beautiful solo of "Gigue" from Bach's Suite No. 3 in C Major."www.ozphoria.com/?p=354news.prnewswire.com/DisplayReleaseContent.aspx?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/01-27-2009/0004961540&EDATE= ... this is FUCKING huge! ... right before kick off!

Trying to find out ... Its an unexpected move thats for sure, plus like a 30sec spot is close to $3 million ... its crazy amounts of dollars, plus a crap load of people will hear the song. It would be smart to release the song on iTunes at least, on the day of the game. (crap load is the technical term for millions) so also ... FOL? ... stands for? ... my guess is ... 'Fuck Off Losers?' ... btw - times for Australia: Monday 5 February @ 10:00am AEDT *LIVE COVERAGE: NSW/ACT/VIC/TAS – 10:00am, SA – 9.30am, QLD – 9:00am, NT – 8:30am, WA – 8:00am www.ebroadcast.com.au/enews/NFL-Super-Bowl-240107.html

Fan of love? Fond of life? Fruit on left? Foxy on leave? Future of leprechauns?
I'm excited... despite the obvious commercialism of them recording a song for Hyundai. You know there's going to be "sellout" backlash. I wonder if this song is any representation of the new direction of the band?

For a Hyundai the car looks not to bad at all. Didn't they let Ford use a song not to long ago?

hmmm. I like what I've heard and it sounds like the 'clip is different parts of the song edited together' so Im not making any final judgement until I've heard the whole thing ... but yeah. another c'mon song. at parts it sounds like Black Oblivion, its nothing thats grabbing me and saying "yeah, this is awesome!" ...

Damn it I have a doctors appointment at 9am - thought it would make it as early as possible so he wouldn't be running late - and now I will miss the live action! Thank god for teh interwebs!
I am not surprised to hear that the band have done this. As soon as I read it I thought perhaps things like this may happen more often and here are a few reasons why I think that - The band are more self-sufficient now and that costs a "crap load" (hehe) of money, this would have given them a heap of cash. Also, they have been doing this for so long that they are probably looking for challenges - If this song was written for the ad specifically, then I can imagine BC seeing it as a challenge...I mean the man has done so many different things with his music - why not?

dont worry kerrie we won't get the ad's over here, so the song won't come up on channel 10... the ads will only be aired in the states, so yeah, its the internet for us, to see all the ads.

I think a big factor for this was also the simple fact that BC and JC are big sports guys, they'd be getting a kick knowing their music is involved in the super bowl some how ... and the only way it can be involved is during a commercial really.
or the half time show? ... hahah. now that would be ... interesting.

I've been listening to this song on repeat; it seems like ever new pumpkins song I hear I have to listen to it 4-5 times before I like it, don't know why. Do you think this is what Billy was referring to when he talked about looking for new kinds of releases, when he said 'multimedia' releases? It's interesting that there's the 'edited' by Billy Corgan bit on the ad, as if his taking part in the construction of the video makes the advertisment a 'creative' project, rather than just the song over a hyundai commercial. It's definately there for that reason I think.

Punchy is my word to describe FOL. After a few listens, it's really grown on me. I like that it kicks in pretty much from the first beat.
