I dont mind the song. Not gonna set the world on fire - but then there is very few pop/rock songs that do.
I find it hard to imagine that the band will stay together for very long. There is a fair age difference between members - and youd have to assume that before too long they'll want the music to go in vastly different directions.
But I'll wait and see. Could be good - could be disastrous!

Just watched the video - does anyone else think that Taylor Hanson grew up to look like Jay of Jay and Silent Bob fame?!!?

Bec, what date is the ND show with Tinted Windows? Grant and I are trying to figure out when/if we're going.

Bec, what date is the ND show with Tinted Windows? Grant and I are trying to figure out when/if we're going. it was the first date posted on the LIvenation site but then it was gone the next day, i think it was a mistake and they just meant Bamboozle. it was in May anyway, from what Grant said when we briefly spoke last night you guys will be going to pretty much the same ones as me in July/August - exciting stuff!

I must say i'm pretty disappointed in James. I don't know what i expected, but I'm not sure how you guys have had reasonably positive responses to this musical brain explosion. Each time i repeat the song i expect to hear something, anything, interesting. But i cant. Admittedly this is the 'single' from the album, but this song's true place would have been as a b-side to mmmbop in 1997. Maybe then it would have pleased some people and grown into a loved 'non-album' song for Hanson fans. My goodness.

Well from what I read the band was firstly a collaboration between Taylor Hanson and Adam (is that his name, the FoW guy). And then James got involved. But James has always been about the 'pop' in his songs played by SP and his own solo work, it is sugary, straight forward pop music. This is just that.

What really suprises me was how easy it is to download that track from the rolling stone website. Not very secure at all, then again that may have been the intention.

maybe just keep that to a private message, like I agree they are silly for making it so easy (and perhaps I've got it in the same methods) but yeah don't want it to bite us on the butt ... chances are small, but yeah. out of sight, out of mind.

Sorry, this doesn't cut it for me. When i thought of James Iha i always thought of this flawless career with the pumpkins and then with APC. This has somewhat tainted it. It's cool if you dig it but it's completely made for the commercial world. Not like this needs to be said but it doesn't compare to ANY pumpkins song, including FOL which i quite like.

How about The Boy? ... that has the same, cheesy, pop, James Iha sound? ...
Its clear that this is where James' heart has always been, look at some of the solo SP stuff he wrote (The Boy, Bugg Superstar etc) its all about fun, pop sounds ... with the other members in TW it could have been nothing but this direction.

Whose solo? Sounds like there's a small stone on there, Mayo styley. Tambourines remind me of "The Boy". Imagine it with clean guitars instead of distorted, and James instead of Taylor. It practically IS "The Boy". I don't think it's overly out of left field for James. That said, I'm not a huge fan.

Mmmm. (Bop LOL) Yeh, straight-up pop song. Simple rhythm, standard pop chord progession, luvy duvy lyrics. Too overly positive sounding and vanilla for a Pumpkins fan like me LOL This is generally what I hear when I accidentally flick the radio to StarFM, so it really doesn't grab me. Yes, it's James' sound preference to a tee, but we've seen what he's capable of with the Pumpkins and APC (forgot about that one). He should really be pushing himself, but then again, maybe Taylor is the songwriter here?

brendo - woops, heheh, great minds I love James, but his 'solo' writing style has nothing on the classic SP songs. Hi co-written songs with Billy, yeah solid and amazing. However APC doesn't count as he didn't write the tunes, he was just a touring member who learnt the already written songs. He only did a few remixes for them. The Linda, Linda Soundtrack, Vanessa and the O's, his work with Whiskeytown, Fountains of Wayne etc ... its all this light pop sound.

Going back to listen to The Boy, it is alarmingly similar! Just turn up the pop cliche to overdrive and viola - Kind Of A Girl! I think part of my grievance with the song is that in 2009 anyone with the most basic of recording gear and minimal production knowledge could have spat that song out. At least 'The Boy' sounds sincere, in my opinion the music and lyrics combine to give the listener a feeling of hope and happiness throughout the song, which directly contrast with its predecessor, 'ugly' on the 1979 single. 'Kind of a girl' just sounds lame! To further my investigation of the travesty that is Tinted Windows, i came upon this video: vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=52897144I rest my case.

Yeah I see what you're saying the boy has a charm about it, and it would never be a lead single ... Tinted Windows is just paint by numbers pop. Will watch the video later when I'm home, it done awesome by your reviews.
