they're playing some random festivals in Europe this year, so hopefully the new album is out before xmas! "Shock is pleased to announce that it has secured the rights for the forthcoming Placebo album for Australia and New Zealand. The as yet untitled album is the long awaited follow up to 2006's Meds. David Bottrill (Muse, Tool, Silverchair) will be taking charge in the studio. The new album is the first recording to feature new drummer Steve Forrest. In what will be Placebo's first album release outside their former EMI worldwide deal, Shock will facilitate all sales, marketing and promotional components of the album release. Shock has well-established local in-house marketing and promotion teams covering radio, press, online and mobile and will develop fully managed marketing and PR campaigns in close consultation with Placebo." source

I am curious. I didn't even buy Meds. I think the last album I bought was Sleeping With Ghosts. They will never top Without You, Im Nothing...that album is brilliant.

Exciting! .. Meds didn't do it for me. Sleeping With Ghosts was just a fantastic era I think ... ok, I'm all excited now. Today I will listen to Meds again, see if time away from it has changed my mind.
Do we know anything about the new drummer?

i'm also a huge fan of meds, tracks like 'drag' and 'because i want you' will never date in my eyes.
re: steve forrest, i only know he hails from california and was in a band called 'evaline', who opened for placebo in either 2006/2007.
re: the random festivals, they include the:
pinkpop in holland, may 2009. nova rock in austria, june 2009. provinssirock in finland, june 2009. rock am ring in germany, june 2009. rock werchter in belgium, july, 2009. heiniken open'er in poland, july 2009.

I gotta say i couldn't get into Meds at all. May give it another shot soonish.
Without You I'm Nothing is just the ultimate Placebo sound for me. Black Market Music was great, Sleeping With Ghosts enjoyable but a little further back as well.
Interested to see what they come up with after Steve Hewitt left. Would be great for them to come out and blow everyone away with a brilliant album.

For me Meds was exciting for a little while, but got old really quickly and now just feels flat, like memorability was thrown out in favour of maturity. Its still worth a listen just for Space Monkey though, which still wrenches my guts everytime i hear it. Without You Im Nothing is insurpassable, I actually like Sleeping with Ghosts better than Black Market though, too much filler on that for my liking. Im hoping they get really weird and electronic, if they want to shed the guitar pop sound like they keep saying they should do it properly instead of trying to have it both ways.

what's up with all the Meds hate? i still love it, there's not a single song on there i don't like. Space Monkey is awesome, and the Pierrot The Clown demo is soooo good. Infra Red ftw.

I think that the problem with Meds is that there is not a song on there that sounds remarkably different to anything else they have done... I have this analogy... You go to the circus and the cover is 5 pence.....
Anyways, If SP did something like placebo did with Meds than a lot of people on the O board would be very happy....

Exactly, its overall just quite unremarkable, the production is dead for much of the album and a lot of the hooks feel like cheap redos of previous ones. Which is also a problem Ive always had with Special K, I still dont understand why anyone would put 2 versions of the same song right next to one another with the later being slowed down a little.
Theres that old rule that a rock band has 3 albums to perfect their sound and then they have to start evolving or they become irrelivent, Placabo tried to do that with Sleeping With Ghosts and succeeded in augmenting their sound without moving away from it completely, meds kind of feels like they didnt know what to do next, so like I said , I hope this is a total departure and embrace of what they were starting to do with songs like English Summer Rain.
IAnother thing that irks me about meds is that Brian feels like he's trying to dismiss a lot of what made the band great, and as a result some of the songs feel really hollow... like infrared, drag etc lyrically just dont cut it as far as im concerned. And One of a Kind is maybe my least favourite Placebo song ever.
Maybe Im just bitter about that whole period, I dont know, I just remember seeing that tour and realising that Brian just didnt give a shit about being there, he was hardly playing guitar, not really putting much emotion into anything, it just seemed like the music was dead to him, with the exception of probably meds and space monkey which did shift the ambience of the room considerably... I think a bit of my youth died that night, seeing him like that, Placebo were my first real love so yeah... theres my 2 cents

I don't know, I kinda lost interest even with BMM. Sometimes they come across to me as trying so hard to be what they want their image to be, that it sounds cheesy. Does that make sense? The last tour I saw them on was the BDO in 2001 was it? The year PJ and QOTSA also played. Next time they toured I wasn't really interested, and it does make me sad because I LOVED them and saw them live about 6 or 7 times in 3 tours. I will go give them a listen again, and I think it has been long enough that I am ready to try again with their new album.

I agree with you Jimmy on Meds, the era was an end for me. It felt like a Placebo trying to be Placebo, just putting out an album because they had to. I wasn't suprised at all when Steve left, it was obvious there was hardly any dynamics between the group.
So I listened to Placebo this week. Placebo (ST) and Withou You still blow me away with the power in the music. BMM and SWG's ... I still feel the same way about them ... Meds I actually enjoyed. Maybe the time away was what I needed.

They are just playing the first single on JJJ now, it is very different. Which is good, at least they are moving forwards. Reminds me a little of Muse or something in parts. Doesn't blow my mind, but has me interested in the album now.
*edit* Ok, so they played "Battle for the sun" which ISN'T the first single.

i want the pumpkins to see that fans love the idea of these expensive boxsets.. and really, the palcebo one is relatively cheap, also considering how the aussie dollar is looking better against the pound now. AU148 at the moment. actually, the killer so far (NIN, Pearl Jam etc) has always been the shipping costs which are about 100 bucks aswell

just listened to 'battle' for the first time.. i think i like it, but i can't really decide how i feel until i play it a few more times.
"We've made a record about choosing life, and choosing to live, about stepping out of the darkness and into the light," frontman Brian Molko told NME. "[Darkness is] a part of who you are," he said, "but [this album] is about the choice of standing in the sunlight instead."
