Michael Owen, out for the rest of the world cup.
Things were going a little too well for the poms for something like this not to come up, hehe.

Go you Aussies! I never thought we would be playing for a spot in the quaters - this is all pretty amazing. I keep telling my friends how a couple of years ago you could never see us in this position.
Italy have some injury concerns, obviously we have no Emerton....here's hoping.

Well im so very pissed (for two reasons, i had too much to drink and for the way we lost.)
to be honest we played well enough, but we didnt have that something extra which we needed...
Firstly their dude should NOT have been sent off, and secondly that should not have been a penalty. I would have been quite satisfied with a loss against italy (lets face it, they play boring football, but they are a quality side) but after limiting them to so few opportunities to have them awarded the match was very disappointing... That being said our players can hold their heads up high, they have done their country proud, it was a massive step, now we need to constantly be getting into the world cup.
anyhow theres still plenty more football to enjoy, its just a shame that we are no longer there to support... GO PORTUGAL!

Heartbreaking
It really was - Even for a match where you aren't really too confident and are more hopeful, it is just painful how the match ended. The Aussies controlled 60% of possesion, Our defence was rock solid for 99% of the match. There is no way that was a penalty at any stage of a game, let alone with 5 fucking seconds left!
Aloisi parhaps could have come on a little earlier perhaps?
Well, my pick to win it all was Argentina, who are still in but face a red hot Germany.
I'm really happy for us to make the second round but you can't help but feel pissed at the way we were eliminated, Well done Socceroos!

2007, that picture is gold!
Exactly as I recall it! (Though things always seem more unfair when you're in a jam-packed pub full of Socceroo supporters!)

I'd like to go to the Australia friendly, see how we go.
Perhaps the threadmaker should change the title to "soccer" or "the word game" thread or something?

i dont understand why they play replays. I know penalties can be a harsh way to lose a game, but its easier then having to play an extra game.. especailly on non-top teams who dont have practically 2 squads..
Also, looks like townsville will take the place of NZ knights for next season unless wellington come up with some quick cash... i liked the idea of a Kiwi team.. Townsville are suportedly going to sign tony popovic if they get the go ahead from the FFA..

yeah i read about that... frankly im not happy for two reasons. I agree with you, having a team from NZ just seems right, plus if they dont they wont be strong enough to start their own decent league, its just bad for football in general. Second of all, WHY WOULDNT CANBERRA PUT IN A BID? ? football is pretty popular here, we have facilities already in place (canberra stadium/ais) and our population is almost three times that of townsville. Other than beaches/climate i dont understand what kind of a lifestyle townsville could offer that would be better than Canberra. My point is that i have on several occasions spent a sunday afternoon watching the belconnen blue devils in the nswsl, id definatly attend and support a Canberra side...

well i dunno exactly why the do replays, in not for it (that being siad we probably woulld have lost in extra time, we lost all momentum) but im sure its got something to do with money.

Big loss for Adelaide with Owens going to Central Coast. I'm pretty disappointed, i hate it when my teams start to break up (Kosmina, Ownes) - Remind me of the Adelaide 36ers a couple years back but thats another story....
I'd love to see us get Carbone back in and get rid of Fernando and Veart - tough call i know....Play up tempo with Diego, Carbone, Qu and the kids running the show....
