the Sydney apple store should be opening within the next few weeks, as it's pretty much done i've read.
they REALLY need to do melb's one right in the CBD not in chadstone.... remember where that nike store used to be on the corner of Bourke and Swanston... now THAT is the perfect spot for it... but i think theyre doing a stupid Melbourne info place there >_> like we haven't got enough already!!

taken from MacTalk.com.au What's in the Box? The 3G iPhone Lands Down Under? Late yesterday afternoon MacTalk received the above photo from a very reliable source who can not be named for obvious reasons (fear of assassination by the Apple Secret Police I presume). Word on the street is that resellers across the country have also received similar packages. As seen by the picture, it's contents are protected under NDA until Tuesday June 10 - does that date ring a bell to anyone? Our source strongly believes that the package contains the much coveted 3G iPhone. Why is there only one and why is it here early though? Our source believes that the iPhone contained within is for promotional purposes, ie. after it's official unveiling at WWDC next week, the iPhone will go on display with a sign saying 'look how cool I am - you can buy me on this date'. That date still looks like it will be June 19, coinciding with the opening of the flagship Sydney Apple Store. In early April, MacTalk published an exclusive story detailing Apple's plans for the iPhone in Australia and providing the arguably world first news that the iPhone would be sold without the exclusive carrier model. Despite the story being dismissed at the time, these facts have all but been confirmed by Apple themselves. This image provides yet more evidence in the case for the iPhone landing here officially very soon.

it's fake. as you can see on the black one it has the hold switch and on the red it doesnt i saw these on sat i think ok so i was in an apple reseller today, and asked them about the boxes. they got one, but they think it's just promo stuff, like when they got one for leopard, they got shirts and pamphlets.... so i dont think it's an iphone... the resellers don't get hardware like that... even when they get machines in they have to order direct to apple to get them in... i took this today ^_^

Yeah the rumours are flying around left and right at the moment. After I posted those picture I read they were fake ... but only a few hours till we know the truth. Awesome photo Josh, where is that store in Melbourne? Also this was leaked today: www.tuaw.com/2008/06/08/rumor-mac-fusion-a-new-developer-mac/It looks like a machine that is somewhere between the Mini Mac and the MacPro ... but its aimed at developers? A weird direction for Apple, but one that has to happen. They can't simply stay a "consumer" focused brand for ever. They need to break into the IT / office enviroment ... but with Microsoft having such a huge control in it ... it would be so hard for them to take over or even make some marginal road into it. but I guess its all small steps.

No prices yet, but Steve did say for the 8G that it would be $199 worldwide ... even if its an extra $100 here ... thats only $299 ... thats cheap as for an 8G ... of course I would get the 16G.
Here is a full wrap up:
WWDC '08 Keynote Wrap-Up Snow Leopard, iPhone v2.0 software, MobileMe and 3G iPhone and AU release 11th July
The first hour of the keynote was a lot of product demos from various iPhone developers showing off their wares. Sega, eBay, Pangea Software, Major League Baseball, the Associated Press and more. There was also a rehash of what we saw at the iPhone SDK keynote with all the developer API's and features, as well as the enterprise functions like Exchange support and VPNs.
There was a fleeting mention of Snow Leopard - however, no info was released. There is a session happening at lunch-time San Fran time titled "Mac OS X State of the Union" which will mention what Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) will bring and what it is. It will be under full NDA - so don't expect any official info. Do expect leaks from loose lipped developers however!
The second hour of the keynote was new product central. First up was MobileMe - the long speculated .Mac replacement (finally). It retains most .Mac functionality, but brings a lot of new features. It is now cross-platform, syncing contacts, email and calendars with Exchange as well as your Mac and iPhone. It syncs over the mobile network with push email, contacts and calendars. The iDisk is revived with 20GB of storage that can be accessed everywhere. Email and photo galleries have a new UI that looks really slick. Full info with videos and such on the Apple website. There is no ETA for release at this stage, but it will be soon and will cost AUS$109, with options for a 5 user family pack for AUS$159 and extra storage options (20gb for $50 and 40gb for $109). Sign up on the Apple website for notification on when it is available.
Second big bang is the 3G iPhone and it's release in 70 countries (including Australia!). The 3G iPhone has a new design with a plastic back and can come in either white or black. The front of the iPhone looks identical to the current model, however, it is thinner and lighter. The 3.5mm headphone jack is now flush with the device, meaning any headphones can be used without an adapter. GPS is also in the iPhone, bringing many location aware services. The device is 850Mhz, 1900Mhz and 2100Mhz - meaning it is compatible with every 3G UMTS/HSDPA network in Australia (even NextG).
It is set to be release in Australia on July 11th on Vodafone and Optus *only*. There doesn't seem to be an option to even buy it on the Apple website, let alone in reseller or even the official Apple store opening on the 19th of June in Sydney. Optus have a website going to take $100 fully-refundable deposits. Vodafone don't have a page up as yet.
The prices at this stage are US$199 for 8GB and US$299 for 16GB. There is no Australian pricing info yet. We also don't know if it's going to be unlocked or simply available on multiple carriers but still locked.
As soon as information about retail availability and prices comes to hand, you guys will be the first to know!

ya, i thought you knew i worked for them... i'm gonna try and talk to someone to see if i can get my 1st gen on them and see what it's like... they'll probably use optus' network

|
|
Post by sunky on Jun 12, 2008 15:34:53 GMT 7
I was 99% sure it was them ... but then I was doubting myself ... But yeah thats going to be awesome if you can have your first gen on them now! So does that mean you still need to jailbreak yours still? Depending on pricing would you upgrade?
|
|
|
Post by Josh on Jun 12, 2008 15:38:57 GMT 7
YES and YES. with the 1st gens you can pretty much put them on any network when you unlock them, you just have to put in the correct gateway for the EDGE network.
i will get a 3g one, and give my 1stgen to my girlfriend.

yeh i know... i guess they're doing that to combat the whole jailbreak/unlocking thing... but i'm sure it wont take long for the hackers to do it.

So since this is a Josh and me thread ... have you heard these rumours about 3 getting the phone? A guy I work with his brother works for 3 and they've been told that they WILL be getting the phones. But now there is this petition online where 3 are asking people to sign it ... seems like a bit of a marketing ploy from 3 if they already have the phone.
Because then when they announce it, it will look like they twisted Apples arm.
But I do hear they have good data plans

hmmm i think everyone will be getting the phone! haha. Vodafone, Optus, Telstra, 3 and primus! who knows what EVERYONES data plans will be like. i just hope Telstra's ones are competitive, as they have the best network for it! Oh and my sister went to the apple store opening in Sydney, as she was there at the time.. she said it was crazy!! i sent her there to get me a tshirt but she didn't line up as there were SOOOO many people. I'm going to go to the Melbourne store opening
