Hasnt he previously mentioned a change in direction for teargarden... i'm thinking something involving that and also the releasing of old SP stuff.
How does everyone think the teargarden concept is going?? I'm really not sure it's working... releasing 4 songs over a 3 month period and then waiting 3 months and doing it all again. I feel its become a bit boring and stale very quickly.

My tip? 20th anniversary Gish reissue. Free on the internet. One song at a time. Every four months.

Had a dream it was subscription for everything - ALL Smashing Pumpkins material old and new. So the only way to get the rare old stuff is support the new stuff.
I guess we have to wait until Tuesday (Wednesday our time) ...

There is obviously going to be a release of old material. The question is what old material is released and how this is done? I'd also be interested to hear about the communication is has had with the old members of the band re this... if any.
I do hope for a change in how teargarden is being released as well.

This news update is huge! Run down of Billy's announcement: New Smashing Pumpkins song, Owata, to be released within in the next 2 weeks. (YAY!) The Pumpkins will release a new album as part of the Teargarden project. The album will be called Oceania (in Billy's video it features a picture of Australia ... we like this!) and will be release later this year, will feature 9-12 songs (approx). Also the Smashing Pumpkins have reached an agreement with EMI (after 10 years) to finally release reissues of all the past material, along with song from the archives. By the end of this year we will see reissues of Gish, Siamese Dream and Pisces Iscariot. Then following years of Mellon Collie, TAFH, Adore and Billy makes mention of re-releasing Machina "in the correct order" and even perhaps remixing how the record sounds. (We love this!) ... These will also come out on a possible vinyl, along as a digital boxset. Billy explains it best, watch the video. Watch Billy announce this on Facebook, this is a huge bit of news with a great approach to how it is released for us fans. www.facebook.com/smashingpumpkins(I guess we can have new threads for the remastered albums etc) ... this is bigger than I expected.

This is huge and amazing, I can only imagine what amazing songs that are waiting for release. Plus having Machina I and II complete would be awesome. Trying to find a new copy of Machina I is nearly impossible atm and I would love a physical copy of Machina II. The Aeroplanes Fly High is something I want too, I love the Mellon Collie era material.
Do you think we will finally get Daughter on CD?

lmgtwty adore session version? butterfly - you won't be getting a physical copy of machina I or II, you'll just get a double disc machina remaster with the proper track sequencing as was originally intended.

Double disc together? That's even better!

I'm glad he dropped this nonsense of releasing one song at a time for teargarden. Good Move.

Ok. Out of all the things that Billy has promised and not delivered on... most of the major ones that get brought up (Metro DVD, Chicago songs, Djali Zwan DVD, SP Vault etc) are post-SP1 promises.
I became a fan in 2000 (go me... grr) so I have no idea about his track record before the original band broke up, essentially. If Billy has a record company holding him to his promises, does he usually follow through?
The new reissue plans sound awesome. I thoroughly look forward to all of that. And it sounds like EMI are pretty heavily involved in that end of things. So given that they're invested in this plan as well, how likely are things to fall through by fault of BC?

Owata, more like oh whatta shithouse studio version ... amiright?!
Ok. Let me be a bit more clear.
I'm just shaking my head listening to this, Billy did this to me with a few Zwan songs (World Goes Round/RIde a Black Swan / Yeah etc) ... where he took a song that had some sort of special live vibe to it and got lost playing around in the studio to produce something I just don't want to listen too.
Now with any SP song somebody may go, wow this is awesome ... but for me I'm just dissapointed. Owata was one of those tracks that I've looked forward too for a long time since first hearing it in 2008. Why did it need a looping synth sound? WHY?! ... its like he has gone for something similar to 1979/Perfect, which is great but it just has too much going on in it.
Keep it simple Billy, it was simple (even with the horns) during the 2009 tour and everybody loved it. This just feels rushed, messy and busy. Who knows, maybe after a few listens and amongst the other tracks I could feel a little more in love with it.

Totally agree. The song had so much energy live, now it’s just bland and it’s lost its ‘oomph!’. I really don’t like the synth noises in any of these new songs. Same with Spangled. I think the synth noises cheapen the songs.
Billy did the same thing with some of the Adore outtakes. They were awesome live and then they became overproduced and lost the feeling.

let's face it. studio 'magic' has never been kind to this band. i'm just thankful we have live boots and demos to make up for it i'd be very interested to hear pre-mixes of zeitgeist, demos of that and this, demos of zwan and TFE... we've got nothing like that since after the Machina Acoustic Demos.

Haha, not to be contrary but I love this song. I felt awkward about the synths and felt similar to the above responses but having downloaded the track and listening to it on speakers (as opposed to headphones) I've really started to feel this song. There's something fragile about it, and then uplifting, which is something i associate with the pumpkins. I can understand disliking the synths as candy cane floss or whatever but listening to the song today I feel like they really add something magical to the track. If you'll allow the comparison, I was thinking about the Machina Demos or Adore Demos compared to the studio album tracks and what I've always cherished about having both was that you could see the guts of the song before a particular 'version' or 'realization' of the song on the album. That's how I feel about the different Owatas we have, whether it be the Chris Isaak version or the recent electric version you have different realizations of the song, with varying instrumentation and emphasis. I'd say that this is my favorite version because I get that feeling of hopefulness that my favorite pumpkins tracks give me, a vulnerable hopefulness.

I was never really a fan of Owata but the studio version is pretty bad. Synths obviously cheapen it a bit... but the drums are too busy, the bass is wayyyy too busy, the song just loses all impact and sounds too much like some preachy "feel good" song, especially when it hits 2:20 and it just feels so cheesy.
Oh well, bring on Oceania, i'm looking forward to hearing SP in the "album" format again, I hope "As Rome Burns" makes an appearance on this.
I gotta say my favourite so far of the Teargarden stuff is Lightning Strikes, that song is badass! Dig the chorus

Hey everyone!
You may have noticed (more likely you didn't) that I've been out of the loop for a while. I was just over all this synth shit. Loved Zeitgeist and post zeitgeist eras, but tdbk era has bored this shit out of me. I mean to the point where I have even found myself listening to Rihanna and Taylor Swift, and that is a new low for me, but with only shihad producing any decent music lately thats where I am.. (there goes my street cred) So many golden non studio songs were made during the residencies. Its not that tgbk is horrible but there is no standout to me. The more I listen in the last week its not bothering me But i think thats about as far as i'll get.
I was also pissed I missed the show at the tivoli because it sold out instantly. Why such a tiny venue?
Now to owata. One of my favourites lately, awesome song, and the horns made it even better or gave it a dirrerent vibe. I was of the same opinion as you sunky but as I've had it on repeat I've begun to like it. Not as much as the live ones, but I'm leaning more towards sunkissed's opinion now. It has a different take on the lyrics.

We are now judging the quality of Pumpkins music with the term "it isnt that bad"... that says a lot about where they have headed over the last few years.

Yeah that's funny I haven't thought about it like that. !! But I do think some people are a little hard on some of the new songs. The only problem i have with the new stuff is that some sound to much a like with the synth and was totally over the sha sha sha.....la la la..... do do do's ...... maybe some are a little repetitive AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH i just don't know anymore

Live - it blew me away night after night, and after seeing it played live, I really sincerely hope Billy has Jeff join the recording process because he really does own those parts.

I get the feeling Gossamer may appear on Oceania under a different name... maybe it's the title track!
I just listened to the "If All Goes Wrong" audio rip of it on the way to work the other day, incredible stuff, forgotten how great this track is!

Good point, or even just portions of Gossamer perhaps ... yeah there are some solid versions/parts to that track.
