the majority of your last post made zero sense to me, lmao. i want to do this for money too! every now and again i have a bit of a career crisis, after this job i'm not sure if i'll stick with design or if i'll try and move into the photography field, but i don't want to give up another 3 years of my life to do a course and band photography is the only kind that really interests me. i also did one semester of photography at tafe (what course did you do? i just realised i don't think i even know what your job is..?), it was fairly basic though. we just sort of learnt a bit about what shutter speed etc was and did some photoshop stuff just using digital cameras, there wasn't enough time for them to teach us about film and stuff.

I did photography at Uni - and it obviously helped with my awesome career in retail. I also worked in photo labs for about 4 years. I applied for a bunch of photo passes with FL this week and got nothing so sad

fear not Kerrie, i'm yet to get anything through fl either probably have to start off with the smallest ones, and get something up for them to see. Aslong as i'm greedy and dont take my own advice, i wont get anything through fasterlouder haha. and bec, i did building design and tech at rmit. my semesters photorgaphy seems a lot like yours and am working at an arcitects office in the city

oh that sounds so cool! yeah don't stress Kerrie (is that how i spell your name?), you never know how many people are applying so if you miss out it wouldn't be because they don't think you're good enough, maybe someone more experienced just happened to apply. you will have to start off with smaller ones, but if you're good i think you can work your way up fairly easily. when you apply for the gigs and give them the link to your FL profile, i always also give them a link to my Flickr for more examples of photography, because i don't feel like what i've put up so far is representative of what i've done/am able to do. i got in for Grafton Primary tomorrow night, they forgot to give me the confirmation, lmao. did you apply for that one Scott? it's at East Brunswick Club, i already have a ticket which means i now have two free tix to the show. i reckon only one of my friends will be interested in coming, so if you want the other ticket send me an sms so i know whether or not to try and find someone else to take it

i've got opeth tomorrow night, otherwise, i'd be hitting you up for it bec and fuck! reading your reply then made me realise i forget to link to my fasterlouder acount all the time I emailed them my flickr account when i first started but since then i've just put what i'm interested in! rmit just have nikon lenses which is utter poo for me! so i hired the lens for 99 bucks but, you can buy an adapter for nikon lenses on canon bodies! so i'm gonna buy one so i can get my mate to hire out the free lenses for me

Yeah i know lots of peeps apply, but the email came through from the FL guy at 3:30am it said and i had replied by 8am and still missed out, but i will keep trying. I didnt link to my FL account because i have no images up there because i havent shot for them before, but this guy only asks for your ID, and i link to a dev art account i set up for just this reason kerriejean.deviantart.com/gallery/ (and yeah bec my name has an ie on the end, everyone always asks if it is with a y or and i, and i have to say ie haha)

auto focus drives me insane, i never use it. Kerrie i'm assuming that was you who added me on FL the other day? when i clicked the name it said the profile doesn't exist, which was weird.

yeah it was me, i think FL was being weird because i was trying to follow a link to scotts profile and kept getting sent to someone elses profile. Anyway the contributor profile i set us is under the user name Skrelly...i forgot that when i logged in and added you the other day from my other profile.

skrelly kerrie? and i dont think its on a first come first served bases. If it is, i'll never get one cos i usually dont reply within 24 hours and thats insane bec! i am yet to use manual focus at a gig! I have more respect for your photos now ;D haha

maybe i've been using auto focus wrong, but whenever i try to it's just a pain in the ass and i can never get it focused on exactly what i want when i need it. i used it for the first week at my work when i was learning how to use an SLR, after that i started doing it on manual and never went back. is there a special trick to it, or is it literally just holding the button halfway down until it focuses and then shooting?

sometimes auto just takes too long in low light or focuses on the wrong part of what you are wanting to shoot, i think manual is easier. Especially seeing as i started on film SLR's and had no option but to manually focus so i am used to that anyway.

The only time i sometimes have trouble with autofocus is when I’m shooting the guitarist or something, and the bassist is just behind him. I always shoot highest aperture, so it looks quite shit when someone’s out of focus, even if there are half a meter apart. But it can be a cool effect. When i was shooting caliban, i got the head of the bass in focus, and everything else out, so made a cool (but kinda useless) photo When i started using slr’s it was a film one, with no AF, but it had one of those focus things on the lense, so you could tell if something was in focus, or just out or whatever, but my lenses don’t ahve that which make shooting manual hard

I always shoot highest aperture really? i always shoot on the lowest aperture possible, and mainly just change the shutter speed. but i still haven't read much of my camera manual (because i'm lazy) so i haven't really gotten into experimenting with different shutter speed/aperture combinations yet.

congrats!! if it's a small gig with no barrier (which all of mine have been) you can stay for the whole time. i usually just stand over to the side a bit and try not to get in anyone's way, considering they paid to get in and i didn't. good luck tonight =) i haven't been able to find anyone to take my spare tix for tonight, what a waste.

i took my other camera with me to the other two gigs i shot just in case mine fucked up, i don't think i'll worry about it tonight. it does this weird thing (or maybe it's not weird) where when i first try to take pics it won't let me set the aperture if it's too dark and i have to use the flash for a little while, then it seems to magically fix itself. anyone know why this would happen?

i shoot on aperture priority mode. What do you guys shoot in? That way i can always shoot in the lowest value (1.8 is that lowest or highest?) Last night was pretty good. was cool being in the barrier but is kinda weird trying to avoid 5 other photographers walking around a barrier taking pics! I feel like I'm at the urinal when taking pics.. i heart my nifty fifty, and use it most, where as everyone else has these enormous tele zooms.. with massive hoods on.. and i feel so inadequate but think i got some good pics.. hopefully! And now to repeat again at Disturbed tonight btw.. big gig photo passes suck! for disturbed i meet tour manager at backstage entrance at 9.15, walk in, shoot my 3 songs, and fuck off again. you dont even get to watch the show! but as i organise the passes, i'm stealing the reviewers +1 pass how did you guys go?

I went ok, think there are some decent shots, I was shooting so I could set the shutter speed and the camera did the rest, I found that was working best.
Such low light and my lenses only open up to 3.5 so I did struggle. Not my best work. Its hard when you are used to having a whole gig to take photos during, as that way you can wait for songs you know are energetic or follow a rhythm. Anyway, I shot them all in RAW so I will play tonight and let you know when they go up. Oh and I also went up to 3200 iso for the night. It was a good learning curve, definitely gotta get some better lenses (but like you scott, my sigma 18-200mm was like $600 of bad lens for indoor gigs, will be good for day festivals).
Taking punters photos is so painful, they were ALL lovely but I as so shy and awkward! Haha.
Also when van she were on I kinda just had to stay in one spot and shoot what I could as it was too awkward to try and move.
Oh and how embarassment for the first support band I was the only person anywhere near the stage, every one else (the 20 people that were there) were all standing on the back wall haha

i'm over shooting in raw. there is so much you can do when in raw, that i figure fuck it.. what i take will be good enough.. cool to tuse though how does 3200 look kerrie? I shoot 1600, and they come out pretty good.. but my camera stops at 1600

Also when van she were on I kinda just had to stay in one spot and shoot what I could as it was too awkward to try and move. i think photography you need an ego. you need to think your photos are good enough to get in peoples ways. I'm the same, i dont like to get in peoples way and piss people off. you guys have the advantage of being females, and not quite as tall as i am the dude from beat who i see at nearly every gig, somehow can come just before a gig sometimes, get to the very front, work his way across the stage, and leave. I'd be too worried about pissing people off to do that

yeah i'm always worried about getting in the way too, maybe once i've shot some more i'll be more confident to get up close. i think it shows in my photos too, i might spend some time doing more research on other people's pics for next time. my gig was alright, the lighting was fucking shocking though, it was literally nothing but red lights for the entire night, they didn't even put a smoke machine on. i think they flashed white lights twice, and then it was back to red. it was worse than Revolver, fuck. i'm avoiding looking at my pics, ugh. i took a few more social ones at the end to hopefully make up for it, haha. Scott i shoot on manual with ISO at 1600, aperture as low as it will go (5.6, which i was just told last night by another photographer is shit and i need 1.8), and just move from 50-125 shutter speed. so is the aperture controlled by the lens? if i bought a better lens would i be able to get a lower aperture? that makes sense... i got talking to a bunch of people at the gig last night, it's funny how many people you end up meeting/chatting to once you've got a camera. there was a guy shooting for Myspace (Laurence) and he gets paid $50 a gig, another girl Nadia who i'd met at the Regurgitator gig and asked for camera tips because that was the first one shooting with my new camera. she was there reviewing for a site The Dwarf (www.thedwarf.com.au) and was telling me how much better it was than FL and that they basically get all the same passes and stuff as FL too, so i'm going to go sign up there. i also met another girl who coincidentally had sent me a pm earlier in the day about Faker next week cos she's a huge fan, and she'd tried to get a pass for last night but missed out. then Trevor came along later and used my +1 Scott i can't believe they boot you out of the gig after the three songs! i always assumed you just got asked to move to the back, wow. when you did that gig at the Corner did you get to stay? i'll post the link to my pics later when they're up, i wanna see the ones you guys took! btw i love this thread.

you got some talent bec if you can pull those shots off at 5.6! it all depends on the lens. thats why i recommend a nifty fifty. for about 150 for canon you can get a 50mm f1.8 lens. it looks really small compared to other peoples, but i like it the most. my f4-5.6 i like sometimes cos it goes really wide angle (17-85), but generally ends up with blurry images. and the one i rented is f2.8 which is really good for a 70-200 lens, but then i guess thats why its 2500 to buy and i'll confirm what happens with disturbed tonight (frontier touring) they said in the email i would need to use the +1 if i want to watch the show. with caliban i just went to the back, but there was no barrier (corner hotel), and last night at the metro there was a barrier, but they just ask you to elave the barrier and thats all. i just walked around the venue shooting from different plcaes though

i need to ask a really dumb/obvious question, but as i said i don't know shit about lenses. when you say 50mm f1.8, that means the zoom is 50mm and aperture would be 1.8 right? i checked out that Dwarf site, alot of the photos on there are kind of crap. i signed up for the mailing list, but the site kept stuffing up when i tried to sign up as a contributor, ugh. i'll try on my sister's PC later.

oh, and if you're on the look out for a new lense, check things like IS (image stabilisation) for canon, or VR (vibration reduction) for nikons. Cos they can gain you a few f stops with way the lens works. thats probably the only thing saving my expensive lens from being a total piece of crap for indoor gigs. i have the cheapest body out of us 3, so it has no image stabilisation built in, not sure what you guys have. the 50mm f1.8 i have has no IS, but as its a 1.8 lens, it doesnt really need it as its so quick. edit: yeah bec, 50mm zoom, so its not a tele or anything, its just on the one length, and f1.8 is the aperture. Another thing whihc doesnt really apply to use guys with more talent, is the type of motor for auto focus. my expensive has a USM (ultra sonic motor) which is really good.. and the 50mm has some cheap thing, but i'd still recommend it highly even if you use other lenses, its something good to have in your bag if its terrible light, and you need to salvage a shoot from total disaster edit 2: not sure if its obvious or not, but the higher the f stop (f1.8 for example) will give you a much smaller depth of field for focus.. so its awesome for things like macro, as its blurs the background really nice, whereas if you want a lot in focus, you up the apperture value, but you then lose the quickness of the shutter speed.
