yeah it's annoying changing lenses for social shots, i usually have to do that so i mostly try to take mine at the beginning and end of night (not between bands) so it's less hassle.
so what do you think about me taking this new one overseas w me Scott? will it be okay? have you been taking your stuff with you everywhere you go? i'd be so crushed if i bought it and it got stolen or broken while i'm over there. what about insurance and stuff?

i'm taking everything with me, but wanna get a smaller bag so i can just take my 18-50 and body around with me, as i wont need the 70-200 for sight seeing. it also depends on the hostel, if i dont feel safe elaving netbook, and 70-200, i'll have everything in my bag with me rather than leaving it behind. i have a biggish shoulder bag with foam cut out for the camera, both lenses, and netbook for travelling, and the festivals. that being said, all my gear will be about the same price as the 70-200 if you buy that also, i'm with amii, aami? haha, whatever its called. they seemed pretty cheap, and said they cover camera if its damaged or stolen or whatever.

okay cool. i really need to buy one of those camera backpack things but they're over $100 minimum and all the ones i've seen are kind of ugly... might look on ebay.
that Paul Dempsey gig i'm shooting tomorrow night, turns out it's at Northcote, arggg! i never would have applied if i knew it was there, in the email it said Corner Hotel.

ah, that sucks about FL putting down the wrong venue! i didnt want a camera bag when i travelled as i thought its obvious then to anyone whats in my bag (if theres a big canon logo on there for example) so i just bought a normal shoulder bag, bought a big piece of foam, and cut out areas in the foam block where my gear should go, and yeah, thats that. can fit in everything i want, and is also cheaper

hmm you make a really good point actually, maybe i should do that. plus i want a bag that looks more 'me', not just a boring black one. if possible would you maybe be able to take a pic of how you've done the foam thing so i can get an idea? where the hell would a get a chunk of foam from...? lmao

Hey y'all. I'm getting into photography quite a bit now and am looking to do some FL work if anything gets slung my way. I'm starting a business to do baby photography as a side business but as I'm a big music fan I thought I'd try my luck with some gig photos. I've got a Canon 40D with a Canon 50mm f1.8 and a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 and a Speedlight 430EX flash. I've been reading through most of the posts on here and from what I can tell the 50mm lens will be a good lens to use. Don't want to get another lens just yet as the concert photography will be more of a fun/learning experience till I get my business on its feet a little.
If you get a friend request on FL from me it's just because I like your shots - I'm not just randomly pickin people to be my "friend".
I've not taken any band shots with my SLR as yet but Karnivool is coming up July 1st here in Perth and I know the sound guy so I'm trying to wrangle something with him.

brianward, feel free to join metal obsession if you like some hard rock/metal, as i dont think i've had any phtoorgaphers from WA sign up yet, and i do the passes i'm jealous of peeps seeing karnivool this tour, they said they're going overseas after this tour, but when they return they;l do a thorough aus tour. and wooooooo bec i'm quite excited for you! Who is the lucky band to get your new lens first?

Awesome - will check out Metal Obsession for sure. I don't really have anything to show you guys yet unless you want to see a bajillion pics of my 4.5month old daughter. I've taken shots at other concerts but nothing with my SLR (only had it for 3 months). I'm trying to contain myself and not give in to buying a 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens in the lead up to this Karnivool gig. Really can't afford it but maybe I could rent it or something.

I wouldnt bother renting a 70-200 unless you're shooting a massive venue. i got by with most of my gigs (excluding disturbed, and slipknot where i rented a 70-200 f2.8 IS) with 17-85. and i'm off to a festival this weekend, but i'll send you a 'confirmation' email after the weekend

yeah i wouldn't worry about renting one either, not if you're just starting out and the venue isn't too big. i'm pretty much the same as Scott, have gotten away with two small-medium lenses for a long time. if you can get the shots in focus enough, cropping them will be fine. my lens came today, check it out!!! and here's a pic of all my gear =) now i need to buy a decent bag to carry it all in so my back doesn't break

oh bec I am so jealous! Looks amazing. So you didn't feel the 70 - 200 was too close?
I have Karnivool to shoot this weekend. Its at the same venue as Trivium was, so I am feeling confident that my lens will do me (I just pray for good lights again), but I am so tempted to get a 2.8, the price is just too high at the moment.
Where did you end up buying from bec? And is it an actual Nikon brand? The Canon lenses (L series) are white, so people really know that you mean business! haha.

lmao yeah i've noticed that with the white Canon ones, when i see them i can tell they're a big deal.
i got mine from Cameras Direct, it's in Brisbane and compared with prices in stores it was about $500 cheaper. i went with the Nikon over Sigma or Tamron cos i was told that it'd be hard to shoot without a tripod because those ones didn't have VR. a girl i know bought a Sigma one though recently so if you want i can ask her if she reckons it's okay.
i really wanted to take my lens out on the weekend for a try but just really fucking needed a weekend off from lugging all my camera shit around and spending the next day on photoshop. i ended up seeing Kram on sunday though and would have loved to take pics then but didn't have time to go home and get my stuff =(

How do you guys meter for the concerts you shoot at? Do you Spot meter or just leave it on evaluative and edit the RAW files... I've got Karnivool next week and although its not for any publication or for selling I really want to be prepared as I can be.

That actually makes me feel better If you don't know and you can still get the great shots you get then I might not need to stress about it too much. I really don't want to botch the shoot even though he shots won't be for sale or anything.

Boo-urns. Because Karnivool have signed to Sony their sound guy wasn't able to get me a press pass for Thursday night. No matter, I've signed up to a few places to get other opportunities to shoot some bands. I'm going to see Karnivool tonight anyway so I might just bring my point'n'shoot camera to get some happy snaps.
Thanks for all the help though guys'n'dolls.

Scott all your photos so far, esp the Roskilde ones are amazing!! my Hot Little Hands pics from thurs night, nothing special but without my new lens i would have been so screwed - www.fasterlouder.com.au/gallery/11388/Hot-Little-Hands.htmi went up to these two guys and asked if they'd like a photo, and one guy was like "oh we're not a couple". haha random, i didn't even think they were.
